This file is a set of messages traded the members of the ELP mailing list before it switched over to "Digest" format. The original ELP list started in late 1991 with a few people and, by the end of 1991, became the "ELP Digest" that continues today. Enjoy! - John Arnold - ------- Forwarded Message Date: Wed, 9 Oct 1991 14:23:43 -0400 (EDT) From: ECKMAN@DOBSON.LARC.NASA.GOV Subject: Re: Early Emerson To: elp Regarding album names for the Nice, I think that there have been a lot of variants over the years since the original albums were issued. 'Thoughts of Emerist Davjack' is, to the best of my knowledge, the correct title for their first album. The album called 'The Nice' had a much longer name subsequently (something like 'Everything as nice as Mother makes it' or something in that vein). By the way, their (read: there) is a domestic CD release of 'The Nice' available on the Sony special products label. I picked it up in Washington for $9.99. The sound quality is terrible though I haven't compared it to my originial album release (which also likely would sound terrible given the condition of the vinyl!). I wonder how the transfer compares to import versions of the album. Does anyone know if the complete versions of their two last albums ('Five Bridges' and 'Elegy') are available on CD. The CD release of 'Keith Emerson and the Nice' is inexplicably truncated from the vinyl version. So far no one has been able to help me in my quest. One day in 1980, when I was at my parents house, I walked into the living room while they were watching the figure skating competition of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. The music that the current couple was skating to sounded familiar, so I listened closely. I said to myself, "That sounds an awful lot like ELP". Sure enough, when the couple finished, the announce said that was and skating to by Emerson Lake and Palmer. Now I was (and still am) an avid ELP fan, and owned every album they had ever released, and I believe that I could identify any ELP song that has been released on an album. The song mentioned was not familiar to me, and it was one that I really liked. I wrote down the information at the time, but have misplaced it since then. I have a very fuzzy recollection that the song title may have been "America", however, I am sure that the song I heard was not the West Side Story "America" that Keith Emerson did with the Nice (I really like that also). So, a few questions: 1) Did anyone else on this list happen to see this competition and know more about it? 2) Did anyone videotape the 1980 Winter Olympics? (I have never found anyone who did, regardless of whether or not they were ELP fans). 3) Does anyone have a list of titles that were only released on B-sides of 45's? The only ELP song that I am currently aware of that was released on a B-side that was not released on an album is "Humbug" which was the B-side of the "Father Christmas" single. "Father Christmas" was eventually released on Works Vol II, although it was different than the single. 4) Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can pursue finding out more information (and eventually get a copy) about the song? If we can locate this and other obscure ELP songs, maybe it would be worthwhile putting together an ELP "B-sides plus other rarities" tape similar to what the Genesis mailing list just did. Everything else is taken from previous Nice releases. In addition to the Nice, here's a list of Non-ELP material I've compiled on Emerson: P.P. Arnold - the Nice started out as her backing band. I haven't determined whether or not they were on any of her recordings. Rod Stewart - The Rod Stewart Album, Emerson plays organ on I Wouldn't Change a Thing. Roy Harper - Flat, Baroque and Berserk, the Nice are the backing band on the song "Hell's Angels" Music from Free Creek - a studio jam album, Emerson appears on about 3 songs: Mother Nature's Son, On the Rebound, and Freedom Jazz Dance ..and of course, his solo efforts: Inferno, Nighthawks, Honky, Best Revenge, Murderock, Harmageddon, and the Christmas Album. Bill ------- End of Forwarded Message ------- Forwarded Message To: elp Subject: ELP list `welcome' and ELP Sheet Music... Date: Tue, 15 Oct 91 10:55:45 EDT From: arnold Hi! There hasn't been much traffic here lately. I think the main reason is that MOST of the list doesn't know for sure that they've been added to the list and may have been holding back. There are now 82 people on this mailing list but, due to the heavy registration in the past week, I've probably only had time to send a welcome note to 30 of you. So, please let this note serve as a `Welcome' to people who are new to the list! ============== A commonly asked question in people's registration mail has been about the rumored ELP reunion. I can honestly say that I've only heard rumors and nothing to back them up. In fact, the rumors usually lie in one of 2 `camps'. One version of the rumor has ELP reforming as a band and recording either a new album or new material to go on an (also rumored) ELP box set. The other version has each of Keith, Greg, and Carl recording separate tracks for the (rumored) ELP box set. I have no information other than that but will pass any along as I see it. Another frequently asked question is that of ELP sheet music that is available. Along with solo/group discographies I hope to collect once my current work crunch lightens up, I hope to provide a list of ELP sheet music that is available. At this time, I know of the following: Sheet music books: Tarkus (table of contents will be written up Emerson, Lake & Palmer (I think that's the later) only name. It's got a shiny, black cover with the ELP logo on it.) Emerson, Lake & Palmer Anthology (It's got a pebble-grained, matte black cover.) Sheet music Lucky Man (included in a sheet musuc book from individual songs: the mid-70s named Space Rock). Sheet Music snippets: various Keyboard magazine back issues. As others have some to add, they can either send me mail at elp-request@xero.cbm.dec.com (or, if that fails them, arnold@decvax.dec.com) or you can post to the list directly. Thanks for your interest in the ELP list! - John - P.S. On MTV last night, I saw an advertisement for the Guitar Greats pay-per-view concert that is sometime this weekend. Among the people listed as appearing was Cozy Powell. No mention of Keith, Greg, or Carl. ------- End of Forwarded Message
