ELP Digest Friday, 20 Dec 1991 Volume 1 : Issue 3 The `I saw him and through his disguise' edition A word from the digest moderator: ! I'm hoping that 1992 finds you all happy and healthy. I'm also hoping that 1992 really is the rumoered year in which an ELP reunion album will be out. Is it too much to ask for a tour, too? I found a tape of the Boston concert today (Yeah!). Anybody interested in hearing it again, send me some mail! Happy Computing! Taylor) To: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: ELP Japanese video At a record show a few months back, I picked up a videotaped copy of the 92 minute Japanese ELP laserdisc which you have. It's really outstanding. I think the bizarre video effects are pretty funny (helps to recreate that 70s atmosphere), but I'll admit they are overdone. Anyway, can you please tell me anything you know about when and where this concert took place. My copy doesn't have any of this sort of info with it. Also, is it the same recording of Pictures which was used for the album? It sounds the same to me, but I haven't listened to the album in quite a while. CD John, Back in October, you gave me an address of the shop you bought the Japanese Press of the Welcome Back CD. Well, I didn't use it. Even if they accept mail order, I wouldn't afford the local import tax. Last week I went to Hong Kong on business and happen to find the same CD. It costed me HK$198 (some US$26). The shop I bought is: Do Re Mi Record D16 Queensway Plaza (Right above the Admiralty Subway station) Queensway Road, Hong Kong Well I don't think anyone will fly to HK to buy this CD. But just in case there is someone on the ELP mailing list who happens to stop over at HK may need it. -Trin ------------------------------ Cc: elp@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: Re: ELP Japanese video Date: Thu, 19 Dec 91 12:33:25 -0500 From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Pat: Glad to hear you've managed to find the 92 miniute concert, too. I don't think that this is the same concert recording as the Pictures at an Exhibition album. It sounds different in some places, enough places for me to think that they are different performances. I'll look at the sleeve of the laserdisc again and see if there's a date/place on it that I could compare to the Pictures album. - John - P.S. Hope you don't mind that I put your message to me (and this reply) in the next digest. I think others might know more or have the same question. ------------------------------ Cc: elp@xero.cbm.dec.com Subject: Re: ELP Japanese video Date: Fri, 20 Dec 91 12:33:37 -0500 From: arnold@xero.cbm.dec.com Pat: I took a quick look this morning at the CD and LaserDisc I have of ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition. The liner notes to the CD say that it was recorded at Newcastle, England in March 1971 (from memory, but it's close). The ELP video claims to have been recorded at the Lyceum in London but I couldn't find a reference to the actual date. Thus, they are not the same performance. I'll let the ELP digest know if I find more details. Enjoy, - John - ------------------------------ End of elp Digest [Volume 1 Issue 3] ************************************
