This has caused the expected flurry of activity. Rather than waste more space with an explanation, I'll let you get on to the more important matters: the new ELP single, CD, and tour. It makes it even more difficult to wait for the release of _Black Moon_. Keith has achieved the ultimate Hammond sound? I thought he did that already! I can't wait to hear it. Anyway, I was in the local independent record store yesterday, and they said two things about ELP: 1) _Black Moon_ is tentatively set for a June 9 release (this was mentioned last issue also), and 2) ELP is releasing a double disc retrospective sometime soon. I hope it's not all hype and we'll actually hear the "no compromises" album they promise. Tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster on Saturday, May 16. However, according to a local radio station, many of the dates in the article announcing the Jones Beach summer concerts are wrong. I'm pretty sure the groups mentioned in it are correct, and only the dates are subject to change. This station (WBAB 102.3) is going to announce the full correct list of Beach shows on May 13. I can't believe this. The last time Emerson, Lake and Palmer toured I was 4 years old. This is too cool. Lucky me, I get to wait a few more weeks before I get my copy in the mail. (The thrills of being a subscriber.) It includes a transcription of Eruption (the first part of Tarkus) as I recall. My brother looked at it quickly and believes it is the same transcription as appeared in the now out-of-print Tarkus sheet music book. The single was released (while I was in the states) on Monday or Tuesday. I got it when I returned on wednesday. The CD single has the single mix of BM (the title track), a piano-only track (very good) called "A Blade of Grass", and an album version of BM. BM the song is like Touch and Go: rather slow and plodding, with simple (in this case, ala "we will rock you") drums. But there is relief from the constant beat near the end, when Palmer uses snare rolls, and Keith gets into some excellent polyphonic keyboard playing. The volcals are OK, and the lyrics are environmentalist, it seems. The album is out on Monday. That's all for now... Ronald L. Well, I had a look for these in the three largest record shops inn central London (Virgin, HMV and Tower) but I'm afraid there was no sight of either a single or album :-( But the big news is that ELP are currently rehearsing, over a six-week period in a film studio complex in Cricklewood, North-West London. I know this because my brother runs a small company which does catering for (mainly) pop video shoots. He often works at this place, and was there last week. He heard some "real" live playing, which is pretty unusual when people are normally lip-synching for video. Yes! he heard some Hammond! I'd already told him that if he ended up working on an ELP shoot, I'd be an unpaid kitchen-hand for the day, so he enquired a little further. As often happens, he got friendly with one of the technicians (even though they were actually working in a different studio). My brother told the guy about me (big ELP fan!) and the tech said "Bring him up here then!" Although he did seem to think perhaps he may have overdone it, there is still the possibility that I may be able to go up and creep into the back of the rehearsal room! I get the feeling that I may be too late for the latest edition of the digest, but if you get to read this in time, email me any questions you want me to ask, *IF* I actually get the chance to talk to the guys. Of course, I can't make any promises that I'll even get there (too many variables for my liking), but if I do, I'll let you know. BTW, the only thing that my brother could really tell me about the music was that it was LOUD! In anticipation... Keith Emerson is cover story in June issue of Keyboard magazine. Buy it. It has much worthwhile material and information. Actually 3 articles: one interview, one on Moog modular system, one on equipment technician/keyboards. (Oh, and the music to Eruption, from Tarkus - which I've already got, so that was the disappointment for me. I'd much rather see Karn Evil 9 impr. 2). Album due to be released June 9. Tour to follow in late July. Jones Beach Theatre, NYC July 25. Call Ticketmaster for tickets ($25). The article by Keyboard veteran Bob Doerschuk (one of the few people there who knows what he's talking about) covers the new album rather in-depth. Excerpted Information: Album titles include: Romeo and Juliet: (Prokofiev) instrumental Changing States: instrumental "fugal development" Close To Home: solo piano Burning Bridges: written by producer Mark Mancina. piano, Moog, organ Better Days: "funky clavinet" Footsteps In The Snow: ballad Farewell To Arms: "ends with long synth. solo" "similar to Lucky Man" Affairs of the Heart: "new Lucky Man" Paper Blood: organ playing; tune was "result of a jam" Black Moon: single. "essences of Trilogy" "stripped down beat" That's 10 (count 'em - 10) tunes on a single CD. It is certainly the largest quantity from ELP at a time. From the article's intro: "ELP now dices most of its music into pop-sized packages. It adds up to all of the old grandeur but with greater variety and more vivid contrasts". The article also discusses a group Emerson toured with called The Best. Joe Walsh & Jeff Baxter-gtr; John Entwistle-b; KE-k; Rick Livingstone-v; Simon Phillips-d They toured Japan and Hawaii last year. (I had never heard of this) The band played "a bit of material from each member's catalog". The Piano Concerto will be performed in Cologne, Germany by Dr. Volker Bungardt and the West Deutsche Rundfunk at the end of this year. (Hopefully it will be recorded and released). On the upcoming ELP tour, Pirates will be present, although the Yamaha GX-1 that it was created on will not. The GX-1 made the ELPowell tour, but the Moog modular did not. It will be a pleasure to see it back in action on this tour. Here is a track listing along with a few comments: 1. Black Moon (edit) 2. A Blade Of Grass (non-lp track) 3. Black Moon (album version) Well, ELP is back! Their sound (as far as the title track BLACK MOON goes) is very modern. BLACK MOON is very bottom heavy, with Lake's bass up in the mix. Palmer's drumming is cool, but at times it reminds me more of Cozy Powell than himself! The keyboards are very layered, making for a dense, (over?)produced sound. The middle section of the song is orchestrated. I get kind of a Queen WE WILL ROCK YOU vibe from this song (seriously!), and I could see ELP opening up their shows with it. The album version of BLACK MOON is quite a bit longer than the edit version, and it features a great intro by Keith which kind of reminds me of a little run he did in DESDE LA VIDA from the "3" album! A BLADE OF GRASS is just a little piano ditty from Keith, nothing too spectacular, but nevertheless cool. I am listening to BLACK MOON as I write this, so I am still forming opinions about it, but all in all, I am looking forward to the new album even more since hearing the single! I ordered this single from EQ'S MUSIC. Their phone number is (315) 252- 1999. One more thing: I just found out about two ELP concert dates in the New York/New Jersey area, and I think these may be the first two shows of the tour: JULY 25 - JONES BEACH, NEW YORK JULY 26 - GARDEN STATE ARTS CENTER, HOLMDEL, NEW JERSEY I plan to attend the July 26 show at the Garden State Arts Center!
