Does anybody know what happened to Rockline on the 25th?? It was supposed to be on 98 Rock in Baltimore but they were playing their usual pop metal instead. :-( Did ELP on Rockline get cancelled/postponed or did the radio station decide they were "above" playing such "trash" as ELP? ;-) If anybody has any info, please fill me in!!! I stayed up with my cassette deck ready to record Rockline last night, too. At midnight the announcer on WHJY (94.1, Providence, RI) said they were having trouble with satellite interference, etc. from LA and the Rockline would return in its normal place in the schedule next week. I thought maybe the rest of the country heard ELP and that this was a problem local to Providence. I'll let you and the ELP Digest know if I can find out any more on what happened. - John - ------------------------------ Subject: ELP on Rockline, May 25... Date: Thu, 28 May 92 12:56:38 -0400 From: arnold Although parts of the East Coast didn't get to hear ELP on Rockline on Monday, May 25, Jim Smith has confirmed that ELP was on Rockline that night. Perhaps someone who heard it could summarize the questions and answers given during the interview segment. If/when I get a tape of it, I'll summarize if no one else beats me to it. - John - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 92 13:45:20 -0400 From: barrett@quincy.cs.umass.edu (Daniel Barrett) Message-Id: <9205201745.AA20456@quincy.cs.umass.edu> To: arnold@thira.ma30.bull.com Subject: re: some elp items >Jim Smith writes: > - I just purchased my first copy of "Goldmine," the rarities-trading > magazine, and was amazed at the number of ELP videos and audio recordings > available, including several CDs of live performances... I recently heard the bootleg ELP disc "Live in Anaheim 1975." Just for your information, about half the material on this disc comes from the SAME concert as the triple-live "Welcome Back My Friends..." album. The playing is easily identifiable, especially the timing mistakes in "Karn Evil 9." The mix is slightly different, though. As described in a note that ELP was going to be featured on WBCN Boston during the afternoon show, I tuned in on the drive home to hear Carl's high pitched voice thru the speakers. Although I caught the tail end of the piece, it was good to hear Carl's enthusiasm for the project. WBCN then played the title song from Blue_Moon - what immediately caught me was Greg Lake's booming voice, as well as his creative lyrics. The concert date for Great Woods is a definite (unless weather does not cooperate - Anyone remember a Greg Lake solo concert scheduled for 12/6/83 at the Orpheum in Boston? Cancelled due to snow and never rescheduled). I purchased the $32.00 seats - I hope I get a beer and a dog with the seat. Palmer: "I spend most of my time within Spain and England, Keith is in England and Germany, so we're frequently exposed to classical music. I don't listen to a particular piece and think 'Wow, this would be great or that would be great' - It's a matter of what feels right for us as a band..." *** I must point out here that these are not the exact comments. With two kids screaming in the backseat of my car, it was difficult to hear exactly what was said, but that is the jist of it. (Maybe I should feed my kids more often than once a week). It will be interesting to hear from people who recorded the interview what the entire conversation was. [... ] Also, do you know what the audience is on the Digest? Specifically, it would be interesting to know what people have been exposed to E/L/P the longest: For instance, if you have seen ELPalmer, when where, etc... The longest song }is under seven minutes long. } }The sound policy is similar to ELPowell with a heavy drum sound }(including electronic drums) and lots of old fashioned Emerson keyboard }sounds, and of course standard acoustic guitar on the Lake ballads. }It may be the sound, but IMO Palmer doesn't sound quite as good on this }record as he did before. His drum fills are somewhat slower, simpler and }standardized. }Emerson and Lake haven't lost their touches though. }Lake sounds same as before when singing his own ballads, but oddly }enough sings the group written songs in a much lower key. His acoustic }guitar or bass playing hasn't changed. }Emerson plays as well as he always has, with a mixture of piano, old }keyboard sounds and new synths. } }Black Moon and Paper Blood are written by ELP and are both quite good - }and remind me of the first songs on the ELPowell album. The single }version of the title track was about two minutes shorter than the album }version. }Affairs Of The Heart is cowritten by Lake and Geoff Downes (!) and is a }typical Lake ballad. }Romeo & Juliet is a piece by Prokofiev, a very nice Emerson style }arrangement and old synth sounds. Fun to play to people who listen only }classical music ;) }Farewell To Arms is written by Emerson and Lake, a lyric oriented song }with a nice keyboard solo in the end. }Changing States is an six minute instrumental by Emerson and the highlight }of the album. Some old fashion keyboard solos and old ELP style }arrangements. Palmer sounds best on this track. }Burning Bridges is written by Mark Mancina (the producer of the album }and a keyboard player of Foreigner if I remember correctly) and definitely }the worst song of the album. Typical boring pop song that doesn't fit. }Close To Home is an instrumental piano solo written by Emerson and Lake }(since when did Lake write or co-write piano solos?). }Better Days is also written by Emerson and Lake, another one of the better }songs, similar in style to the title track. }Footprints In The Snow is a very typical Lake ballad (in fact too }typical - a boring way to end the record IMHO). } }I don't like much of the cover picture (a carousel and money flying in }the air), typography or the new circus style ELP-logo (also featured on }the single), but otherwise the packaging is quite nice, all lyrics are }included, also an address to ELP INFO and an ad of a new video. } }Just like you all wanted it, the good old ELP is back! } }- hannu }-- ------------------------------ From: Burch Seymour Date: Tue, 26 May 92 09:43:28 EDT To: J.Arnold@bull.com Subject: Black Moon, I got it! Howdy, Well, Am I the first? I've got the CD of Black Moon (The whole thing, not just a single) in my hands. I just got back to the states on Sunday from a 16 day Choir tour of Europe. I saw posters all over Berlin for the "BlacK Moon, Ein Neues Album..." Being on a tour bus, however, I wasn't able to get a copy until one day in Leipzig. CD's a EXPENSIVE over there. Cost me 18 bucks in US dollars, and that's the normal price for CD's. Anyway it's good, but if you were expecting BSS part 2, you'll be very disappointed. It's a lot like ELPowell as one comment in the last newletter stated. Some of the stuff is very like the Emerson Christmas album of a few years back. The Hammond and Piano are more present but the sound is more accompanyment rather than the lead. I think that before all the MIDI stuff Keith had to really play the hell out of the Hammond to get a big sound. Now its just part of the mix. If you'd like more info, let me know. I've got a lot of stuff to catch up on after the trip, so I don't want to waste my time if you don't need it. - -Burch- bseymour@encore.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 May 92 14:37:38 pdt From: Jim Smith To: J.Arnold@bull.com Subject: A Black Moon Review Hi, John, Here's an item forwarded to me by my friend Andy Moore. OK, that's not entirely true. From }the three tracks I heard, he seems to be trying to achieve a musical compromise }between the use of sophisticated synth sounds and the old-fashioned organ }and piano sounds. The keyboard melodies were generally quite good, IMHO. }Palmer's drumming, sadly, was unremarkable. } } I only heard these one time while driving in my car, so I can't really }give more detailed descriptions. Also, I can't say that my opinion of these }songs won't change upon a second or a third hearing. And, these were only }three songs-- not the entire album. As I said in my last mail it's not BSS, but everthing that was ELP is back. The powerful beat, big sound, Hammond wail, some very nice piano work. The thing that put me off a bit at first is the too-slick production. And while the Hammond is there, Keith never really cuts loose with a big solo on it like the old days. I guess with MIDI and multi layered sound, he doesn't have to play so hard to make the sound. Maybe it's a bad analogy, but it reminds me of hearing the fans reaction to Bob Dylan with an electric guitar. Something is lost when technology replaces some of the soul. A question: If/when you talk to the publicist please ask if a music book will be forthcoming. The piano solo Close to Home is awesome. - -Burch- bseymour@encore.com ------------------------------ ======================== New Issue of ELP Fanzine ======================== Subject: New issue of Fanzine for the Common Man is out... Date: Tue, 26 May 92 10:52:02 -0400 From: arnold For those of you who are interested, I received the latest issue of the ELP fanzine, `Fanzine for the Common Man', in the mail on Saturday, May 23. The new issue (#11) is filled with some stuff about Black Moon as well as their usual bits of ELP/Nice/etc. trivia and info. I am taking great care NOT to have the ELP Digest contain info taken directly from the Fanzine since it is copyrighted. Also, it's not fair to a small publisher to compete with the `free' service the Internet provides to those of us with Email. Still, I find the Fanzine a worthwhile $3 expense ($4 if you're outside the USA due to higher mailing costs). Especially since there are only 3-4 issues per year. (Besides, I haven't found a way to do pictures in the ELP Digest yet!) So, if you're interested in the Fanzine, contact the guy in charge: David Terralavoro 43 Spring Street Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 USA - John - P.S. I have no affiliation with the Fanzine other than that I am a satisfied customer. ------------------------------ End of ELP Digest [Volume 2 Issue 12] *************************************
