(What year did they break up? It was during their last tour.) Lake opined that ELP had, at that time, gone as far as anybody could with the synthesizer/classical-music-roots/rock-beat "style" that had been their trademark. He sounded really depressed and angry. He said something to the effect that all the acoustic ballads that he always insisted on were a kind of antidote to the "mechanical clanking" of much of the rest of the music. They couldn't get much out of Emerson, but he sounded just as bad. These guys must have had a pretty lousy final tour if this interview was any indication. At the time, I thought it pretty arrogant of them to think they had done all there was to do with that style of music. But now, I think they were probably right, and looking back on it, it was clear that what they were saying between the lines was an even more important message than the words themselves. CD about 4 years ago, and was somewhat baffled at the track arrangement: there are just *2* tracks, one for side 1 of the album, and one for side 2. I have a few questions for other ELP fans relating to this situation: 1. Is this the "normal" track layout of the CD? Not that I mind listening to the whole CD :-), but it can be slightly annoying to scan through 14-or-so minutes of track 2 to find the beginning of "Nutrocker", for example. 2. What exactly constitutes "The Old Castle"? My guess is that it's the bizzare-sounding effects Keith plays on his ribbon controller right after Greg Lake's classical guitar piece ("The Sage", right?) and just before the whole band jumps in behind Keith's moog solo ("Blues Variations", right?) My second guess is that what I think of as "Blues Variations" may, in fact, be "Old Castle/Variations" since there is a marked delineation between the opening moog section and the later organ section. Any insight from ELP fans with an accurate cue sheet would be appreciated! * * Brian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 92 08:18:07 EST From: Brian=Podesta%COMPUTER%UMASS@BANYAN.UMMED.EDU Subject: ELP Digest questions Hi John: I have 3 questions for you and/or the digest: 1) In the Black_Moon liner notes, there is a note indicating an ELP video will be available September '92. I have half-heartedly looked for this, but has anyone seen such a beast? If so, where can one obtain a copy? 2) There was talk in prior digests indicating ELP may return back to the States after there stint in Asia and Europe. Any further word on this? 3) Another item in a prior digest, indicated ELP signed for 2 records under the Victory label. Any info on this (release date/material/etc)? ------ End of Questions ------- "....I'm Perfect!...Are You?...... . . . .....*" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 92 13:05:10 pst From: Jim Smith Subject: New Album, Tour Dates, etc. Hi, everyone, I have several pieces of information that may be of interest to ELP fans: The music which was played before ELP came on at the Northern California concerts included the opening to Respighi's "Pini de Roma" or "Pines of Rome," as well as his "The Birds" and "Church Windows. ---- "Creole Dance," the solo piano piece that Keith Emerson has played at concerts since 1986, appears to be based on the sixth movement, "Coda," of "Suite De Danzas Criollas" For Piano by Alberto Ginastera, published by Boosey and Hawkes in 1957, and still available. This piece is 81 measures in constantly changing time signatures, and the tempo is marked "Presto ed energico," quarter note = 176. It is clearly only the basis of the piece that Emerson plays, outlining the opening and closing parts of what he plays. ---- The inside cover of the December 1992 issue of KEYBOARD magazine has an advertisement from KORG electronics, the synth manufacturer, for their current high-end workstation, in which they are offering a CD done by top keyboardists entirely on the 01/W workstation. I think that they are also offering a floppy disk of the sequences from which the CD was made for the 01/W, although this was not mentioned in the ad. Anyway, one of the artists involved is Keith Emerson (Others include Dave Stewart (of Egg and Stewart/Gaskin, not Eurythmics) and Tom Coster. I don't have the ad here, but there are several other interesting names on the list). This CD is available in limited quantities from KORG for the price of shipping and handling, $3.50. Here are the ordering details: "Best of the 01/W" CD $3.50 Postage and Handling to: Department CDO, Korg USA 89 Frost St., Westbury NY, 11590 --- I received Volume 1 Issue 1 of the ELP News Service, "The Official Newsletter of ELP." This, as you may recall, was offered via subscription for $12 a year via flyers distributed at the merchandise counters of their concerts. Issue 1 is 6 pages long, where one of those pages is mailing address and address updates, and another page is a merchandise order form similar to the one I mentioned in a previous digest. There are 7 B&W photos of the band, some glowing letters, an interview with Greg and Carl, and a testimonial article of a fan. There is also some interesting news, as follows: NEW ALBUM: The band intends to release a new live album, "Emerson, Lake and Palmer Live At the Royal Albert Hall By Appointment." The album, recorded over three nights at Albert Hall in London on October 2nd, 3rd, and 26th, is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on January 26th, 1993. The recording will be available December 16th, 1992 in Japan and early in 1993 in Europe. Talk about quick turn-around time! UPDATE ON THE VIDEO DOCUMENTARY: The documentary video will feature vintage and new footage and will draw heavily from the material shot at Albert Hall and Verona during the European leg of the current tour. Interviews are interspersed with live footage throughout, including archival material and material from the band's reformation and recording of Black Moon. There is no scheduled release date. The news service says it will be offered to subscribers. I will be watching for it, and if that is the only place it is made available, perhaps we can do a one-time group order. PHONE LINE: Shades of commercialism! Anyway, they are apparently going to offer a phone line with up-to-the-minute news, messages from the band, and merchandising. It says details will be available next issue. I'll make them known to the digest when I receive them. Although there wasn't really any new material in the interview with Greg and Carl, the general tone was very upbeat. As far as I know, this will be the first cross-Canada tour ELP has ever undertaken. Taken directly from a press release received today, here is the itinerary: Jan 13 - Edmonton, Jubilee Auditorium Jan 14 - Calgary, Jubilee Auditorium Jan 15 - Regina, Centre Of The Arts Jan 16 - Winnipeg, Walker Theatre Jan 18 - Thunder Bay (!!!), Community Auditorium (yes, they really are playing Thunder Bay! This is not a cruel joke! :) ) Jan 20 - London (!!!), Centennial Hall (see explanation for Thunder Bay show... :) ) Jan 21 - Ottawa (yee haw!), Congress Centre Jan 23 - Toronto, Massey Hall Jan 25 - Montreal, Theatre St. Denis Jan 26 - Salle Albert Rousseau Tickets for *ALL* dates go on sale this Saturday at 12:00 noon. Ticket prices range from $25 to $40 depending on the venue. Here's the press release propaganda for all that are interested: - ----- BEGIN fluff ------ EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, the british power trio that defined progressive rockthroughout the 1970s returned to the popular music scene earlier this year with their first album in fifteen years - Bolack Moon. They are bringing their scorching live show across Canada in January hot on the heels of the release of their new live album "Emerson, Lake & Palmer Live At The Royal Albert Hall". "For all those fans that feel they've been starved of music that challenges and pushes, we plan to put on a hell of a show!" says keyboardist Keith Emerson. "ELP is back!" The critical response to the Black Moon Tour echoed Emerson's sentiment [somehow the promoter managed to find three positive quotes about recent ELP shows, he/she deserves some sort of award for such incredible hunting skills...]: "Emerson Knife-jabbed, rode surf and knocked over his organ, proving that when it comes to brutalizing instruments, Keith Emerson is still up there with ex-Who guitarist Pete Townshend." - Toronto Sun [this is supposed to be a compliment!?] "With Lake and Palmer providing a piercing rhythmic pulse for his final act, Emerson kicked at the organ... He fell on the ground, dragged it down on top of him, stuck two daggers in the organ keys and then played a Mozart organ piece up-side down. Needless to say, it was no small affair." - Toronto Star [yet even mroe gushing praise...] "Drumming like a man possessed, Palmer displayed a passion and precision that was mirrored by the technological wizardry [read: quantification and sequencers] that accompanied him...his six minute drum solo was alone worth the price of admission" - Cleveland Vindicator [what on earth is the "cleveland vindicator? a local NRA chapter?!] Formed in 1970, ELP conquered the charts and filled concert halls throughout the world fueled by 11 releases including their debut single "Lucky Man (1971), Brain Salad Surgery (1973) and their triple live album "Welcome Bakc My Friends To The Show [and album title] that never ends: Ladies And Gentlemen...Emerson, Lake & Palmer." (1974) The combination of Keith Emerson's keyboard wizardry and showmanship, Greg Lake's lyrical muse and rich vocals, and Carl Palmer's powerhouse drumming will make this tour a very memorable even in 11 cities across Canada this January. Blast away the Canadian winter blues -- see an evening with Emerson, Lake & Palmer! - ----- END fluff ----- There you have it, concert promoter fluff at its finest!
