Does anyone know if this will take the place of the ever-upcoming video documentary? I hope not. I also hope this video is a complete Black Moon show, since there's no reason to edit a video down to CD-length, but the way record companies operate, I'm not holding my breath. Later all. Andy Acunzo aacunzo@ccmail.sunysb.edu ------------------------------ To: FISHBOY Cc: arnold Subject: Re: New video release Date: Mon, 15 Feb 93 15:57:22 EST From: arnold Andy: I just picked up a copy of the ELP "Welcome Back" video on Friday. It is NOT a full Black Moon tour show. It is the "video biography" with some new clips and some old clips with new snippets of ELP interviews to weave them together. The good news is that the video only retails for $14.99 (and I got mine on sale for $10.50)! The bad news is that the sound quality isn't as good as I'd hoped and that there are not many "complete" songs. There are a number of good bits but I think the only thing that is shown in its entirety with a fade to allow for voiceover from ELP interviews is the Black Moon (the song) video. I'll post a more complete review to the ELP Digest in the near future unless someone else beats me to it. Bottom line is (a) it's not exactly what I would have done but (b) it's great for the price. (I think it was wise to price it very cheaply. That way it's more likely to get picked up by video rental stores (which could help volume sales a bit) and more likely to be purchased by fans who aren't totally committed diehard fans. - John - ------------------------------ Date: 17 Feb 1993 12:49:56 -0500 (EST) From: FISHBOY Subject: Setlists To: j.arnold@bull.com Hi. I couldn't make it out of Youngstown to see a show on this tour (ah, the responsibilities of adulthood...), so I was glad to get a chance to see them -- and they got to play TWICE, to boot! Anyway, while I was watching the tape, I decided that what the world needs now more than anything else is a comprehensive list of TV appearances by ELP :-) So to get us started, here's what I can recall from over the years: 0. I didn't see this one, but I'm trying to go in chronological order. A friend told me he saw them around 1974 (did ABC have a show called "In Concert" ?) Anyway, he says they played ALL of Karn Evil 9 ! Anybody see this one? 1. NBC's Midnight Special, hosted by Wolfman Jack, around 1977. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what they played since I was basically unfamiliar with ELP at the time. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say "Tiger In a Spotlight." Can anybody else shed some light on this? 2. Don Kirshner's New Rock Concert, also around 1977. OK, OK, I actually remember something about this one. This was a video of "Fanfare for the Common Man" filmed in an empty stadium. They were dressed similar to how they appeared in the back cover photo of Works Vol. 2. 3. MTV, 1986. The ELPowell Video of "Touch and Go." It was in pretty heavy rotation for a while. I haven't had cable TV since 1988 (one of our neighbors said "How do you LIVE without cable? :-) ) Have ELP had any other videos aired lately? 4. MTV, 1986. Emerson, Lake and Powell were guest VJ's one night. I thought it was kind of disappointing. Keith did his impression of the Peter Gabriel video that was out at the time, and Greg joked about how big Cozy Powell's drumsticks were. I was really hoping they would choose some rare, offbeat videos, perhaps reflecting their own tastes, but instead they just showed the current MTV top 10. 5. Late Night with David Letterman, NBC, 1986. Keith Emerson (without Lake or Powell) played "America/New World Symphony". Letterman also plugged the ELPowell record. This is the only time that I've ever seen Paul Shaffer and the band use sheet music. 6. Tonight Show with Jay Leno, 1993. "Paper Blood", "Fanfare for the Common Man." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 93 15:41:30 CST From: daw@tngstar.cray.com (Dave Wright) To: arnold@cyclades.ma30.bull.com Subject: ELP Saw ELP at Northrup Feb 19 in Mpls MN. Unfortunately, I was in front row right in front of the PA with extreme pain. Too bad they can't get a decent sound system and engineer. Just FYI, the stage smoke machines set off the smoke alarm and they played for about 2 minutes with it going. At first I thought it was Palmer with a synthi drum. Then Emerson kept cracking up over it and finally axed the song and the band stopped in the middle of Tarkas/knife edge with Emerson knifing his throat to Lake and Palmer to say he can't concentrate with the alarm going. After a 10 minute break they came back on and finished the show without the smoke. Dave W ------------------------------ From: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca (Anil Prasad) Subject: Come and trade the show! To: J.Arnold@bull.com Greetings all. Today I came across a review of ELP at Radio City, and it was so unbelievably positive, I just had to share it. It's taken from _Good Times_, a local entertainment paper. Emerson, Lake & Palmer Radio City Music Hall The prototypical 90's music fan does not smile on aging musicians. The younger fans want their own heroes, the older fans "grow out of things." When groups reunite after years of inactivity, it's usually met with a reaction of "Oh, time to put the kids through college" or "they must have run out of money." This doesn't leave a hell of a lot of latitude for groups like ELP. Emerson, Lake & Palmer is a rare bird, indeed, as they not only have respectable new materiail to push, they also have musicianship abilities that tower over almost everyone that has ever been a peer of, or followed them into the rock forum. A recent tour de force at Radio City Music Hall confirmed that ELP is a group rightfully still at work. A two-hour show that confidently mixed new songs with classics from their late 60's, 70's and early 80's superstar period to dazzle and entrance an enthusiastically loyal following. The three Brits also showed off something they've never really exhibited before, an incredible sense of touching showmanship, an extended hand to the audience, a whole new link between fan and band. Opening with an excerpt from "Tarkus," the trio crisply rode over a set that supplied tested crowdpleasers like "Knife's Edge," "Pirates," "C'est La Vie," "Still...You Turn Me On" and "Fanfare for the Common Man." Though last year's studio album, _Black Moon_, was met with disappointment in many circles, many of the songs from it seemed to take on a new vitality live. The title track, with its ominous storyline and "Paper Blood," a rip at the materialistic madness of current times were resounding winners full of urgency. ELP has always been a musician's favorite due to the keyboard explorations of Emerson, the percussive inventiveness of Palmer and the sensitive folk-leanings of Lake. To the crowd's utter delirium, they each took extended solo spotlights and positively glowed. It's considered a faux pas these days to do solo turns, but you can't lump ELP in with everybody else. The superb results spoke reams of the solos being the right things to do, the timing and length perfectly in tune and satisfying. When you go to see extraordinary musicians, you want the extra-large portions of their prowess. As ELP closed out their show with trademark hijinx (Emerson mangling a piano), they didn't resemble has-beens trying to go through the motions of recreating their glory days. Hardly, ELP was proving that the glory days are still in the here and now and that their old tricks with a wink of an eye and a knowing smile, are institutions in musical showmanship. Are ELP trendy or hip? Nope. They are something completely different in this day and age: A group that makes MUSIC, can execute with awesome skills and leave behind a night that will remain unforgettable. Still...they turn it on. - John Blenn ############################################################################### So how's that for a good review? One thing I found interesting was the reference to their new-found showmanship. Being a younger fan, I wasn't aware of this. Were their 70's shows more one-way, coming FROM the band TO the audience? I haven't seen them recently, but it still seemed pretty one-way when I saw them last July on the BM tour (granted, that was only the second night of the tour). They really didn't look too "into it," but from what I've recently this has changed. Oh well, I guess I'll find out the next time they come to town. Later. Andy Acunzo aacunzo@ccmail.sunysb.edu ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 93 16:04:59 CST From: doug@tellabs.com To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: Review of ELP on the Tonight Show Review: ELP on The Tonight Show Paper Blood I think that this is the weakest song in ELP's live setlist. I was really disappointed in the first organ solo of this performance. It's the only time I've heard Keith Emerson blatantly mess up. He did, however, redeem himself on the second solo. An ok performance at best. Fanfare I liked this performance, even though it was a cut down version of what they normally do. No train wrecks, A solid performance. Review: ELP Live At The Chicago Theatre Feb. 21 First off, we had a little seating problem. I had purchased 20th row center seats, but when we arrived, the sound and light equipment had taken up the place where our seats were. The manager came over and took us up to a VIP box which was pretty cool but was off to the side (Keith's side). Anyway, I complained a bit and she said she would see what she could do. The house lights went down and the opening sound of Tarkus starting ringing through the air. Then the curtain blasted open and they began their show. Tarkus was excellent. It was done as on Live at the Royal Albert CD. And Keith was really getting into it. The synth then organ solo in the middle was great. Next was Knife Edge, which was played just like on the Albert Hall CD. And this also sounded great. About half way through this song, the people who owned the seats the manager put us in came in and the ushers told us that we did not belong in the VIP section and that we would have to leave. We explained our situation to them and they said they knew of a party that was not coming in one of the other VIP boxes and moved us over almost in the center of the stage (cool!) where we stayed the rest of the show. Next was Paper Blood which is my least favorite live song they do. But they did a good job on it and Keith didn't screw up on the solo like on the tonight show. Black Moon was next which I think sounded great and then Close To Home followed by a great version of Creole Dance. Creole Dance really has changed with time. I still don't know too many keyboardists who can play left hand patterns like this and still do the right hand solos as well as Keith. Next was Greg's solo part of the show which included Still You Turn Me On and C'est La Vie. Keith was hilarious on C'est La Vie. When it was time for the accordian solo he came strolling out on stage dressed in a French beret and puffy balloon sleeved shirt with a vest on blowing kisses to the audience. When Greg looked over at Keith he cracked a big smile and almost started laughing. After the solo Greg said "Thank you Pierre". It got a big laugh from the crowd and Keith bowed and faked throwing the beret into the audience, laughing at them as they jumped up trying to catch the hat he didn't throw. Next was Lucky Man which was exactly like Albert Hall except it sounds like Keith has been practicing playing the guitar solo more like a guitar because he added alot of nicer parts to the solo thats on Albert Hall. Next was a 15 minute intermission. Honky Tonk Train Blues was after the break with Greg Lake sitting on the front of the drum riser. Then a great version of Touch And Go that was quite different than the studio version. I really liked the newer version. Then Pirates, one of my favorite ELP songs. This song always sounds great live. Greg Lake even remembered the words. The only thing missing from the new Pirates is the GX1 LFO modulation effects at the beginning. The new digital synths just can't quite cut it when it comes to that effect. But this song still sounds GREAT live. Then Hoedown minus the synth solo in the middle. It was great to hear this song in the setlist again. I always have liked it and live it is just that much better. Pictures at an Exhibition was close to the Black Moon tour version, as far as I can tell. It was really good. During the part where Greg is singing solo (with no instruments behind him) was really funny. The crowd would start chearing and screaming after each vocal passage. And Greg started talking and laughing with the crowd a bit. Then, when it was time for the whole band to come back in, Keith got into the fun with the audience and got the crowd screaming at Greg. They were having alot of fun. Carl Palmer's drum solo was especially good. He really knows how to milk the audience. We were screaming our heads off at him. The Encore Fanfare/America/Rondo was especially great at this show. It must have been the chemistry in the air because I have never seen Keith Emerson play so energetically before in my life. After Fanfare and the Blues Variation solo, he went into America and then Rondo. His organ antics (knives, and general abuse) were especially long for this performance I think he played an extra 5 to 10 minutes or so during his organ wrestling. Then after killing the Hammond and leaving it lying on the floor he proceeded to climb up on top of his YAMAHA midi grand and, while standing, played Bach's Tocatta and Fugue (or a portion of it) backwards on his top midi controller. Then he proceeded to hump (for a lack of a better explanation) the controller while playing it, using his foot to change the pitch on the joystick much like the effect he gets by hitting the starter button on the Hammond. This was quite strange even for Keith. Then they wound it down and ended the Encore like on the Royal Albert CD. And the crowd went wild. Even with the early distractions with the seating, this was a great concert. It is evident that ELP is really enjoying themselves on stage. I have never seem them in such a great mood, playing with the audience, and just horsing around. The show started at 7:30 sharp and the house lights came on at 9:55. So minus the 15 minutes for intermission, thats 2 hours and 10 minutes. Thats a little longer than the previously reviewed shows, I think mostly due to the extended solos and knifing of the organ. A GREAT CONCERT!!! I can't wait till the next studio album/tour.
