I'm a bit of an ELP completist, and I have not heard of this (and I'm now smacking my lips in anticipation of new material). [ Editor's note: PM was the name of a band started by Carl Palmer and others (who aren't famous) shortly after ELP broke up. I have the "1 PM" album (their first and, I think, only album). Unfortunately, the album is currently in storage while my house gets finished. I will try to remember to type in any info from the jacket once I get it out of storage (by the end of September, I hope). So, please ask again in a few months and I'll post more info on this band. By the way, as I recall, the album is not that good but it is an interesting historical artifact since it serves as a transition between ELP and Asia for Carl. ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jul 93 16:07:21 CDT From: doug@tellabs.com To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: ELP Boot Videos My cousin who works in a music store here in the midwest has a co-worker who sells bootleg videos of just about any band you can think of. His list Th Nice - Black&White kind of crummy quality but still pretty cool. Has Rhondo, America and others. Tokyo 1970 - Cool piano improv where Keith starts playing Tarkus, before Tarkus was released. Tokyo 1972 - Haven't seen this one. YET!! The California Jam - A 1970s concert broadcast on ABC's In Concert years ago I saw the original airing. It is complete with the flying piano routine. Montreal Works Tour - "ELP In Concert" CD Tour complete with orchestra. 3 Live - Can't remember where this one was from. ELP Live in Boston - Black Moon Tour - Poor quality. The Best In Tokyo - The Best was a band put together with an All Star line up Keith, Joe Walsh, Carl, John Entwistle (sp?) and others. Rock-n-Roll Your Eyes - An old 70s movie release, re-released as ELP Pictures at an Exhibition on Sony lase disc. They are all about $20.00 each I will slowly get the whole collection. With exception to the concert in Boston. I was wondering about these because a long time ago in this Digest someone posted a videography of ELP boots. I recall a couple of these being in that list. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jul 93 12:39:14 -0400 From: jakirwi%leia@relay.nswc.navy.mil (Jean Anne Kirwin) To: jakirwi%leia@relay.nswc.navy.mil, J.Arnold@bull.com Subject: Where can I find... Hi everyone. This is my first post to this list. There are a few songs on my mind that are favorites of mine, and I'd like to know if anyone can tell me 1. Is there sheet music avalable for them 2. Bootlegs 3. All legit sources The songs are: Still... You Turn Me On >From The Beginning Lend Your Love to Me Tonight C'est La Vie Also - I have a copy of a Greg Lake LP from about 1983 with 'Retribution Drive', etc. and some stuff done with Bob Dylan. Does anyone know if this is stll in print? I'd like to get it on CD. I've wanted to get 'Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends' on CD for a while now, but $50.... a little too much right now (but I just love 'Take a Pebble' and 'Still You TMO'... great stuff. Thanks! Jean Kirwin [ Editor's note: I'll try to dig through my stuff to get answers to these questions in more detail. (Other readers, please help me since I probably don't have the definitive list. One quick answer though is that Greg Lake's first solo album (just titled "Greg Lake") is available as a Japanese import CD called "Greg Lake/Gary Moore" (apparently someone thought that it would sell better in the 1993 market place with Moore's name more prominently displayed). So, look around in various sources for Japanese import CDs for it. Also, I'd like to plug the CD version of "Welcome Back My Friends..." (the 70s album, not the new Victory release). I was surprised by how good the CD version is. Though it is obviously mixed to be played mouder than I like, the clarity of the CD is much better than the vinyl pressing of the same album I have. It's really a delight to hear how much is going on in the live versions of these pieces. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 93 10:01:31 EDT From: "Edward S. Zuckerman" (AED-PD) To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: Hello All! 7/28/93 Hello ELP freaks! I'm new to your list, so let me introduce myself (not that you care..;-) ) My name is EDDIE (Yeah, Yeah, I know....."Are you ready"....). I just sort of stumbled upon this list recently even though I've been an avid internet ranger since 1985 or so. Anyway, In late 1974, early 1975, I was a 13 year old snotnosed little misfit who used to tag along one of my older friends (16yo). Well, he had a *-+=stereo=+-*!!!! I would beg to go over his house to listen to three things; Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", Chicago's "Chicago Transit Authority" album, specifically the feedback song "Freeform Guitar"....and, you guessed it, Brain Salad Surgery! While normal kids played soccer and softball, I was rolling around on my friends' rug with earphones on, writhing to an dangerously loud "Toccata". I knew I was in for a strange life ;-) I ended up buying BSS and playing it over and over and over on the family piece-of-shit record player from Hell. I feel like I know that album like I know how to ride a bike! Today, when I hear the CD, I still expect certain skips to be there ;-). Shortly thereafter, WBMFTSTNEL&GELP became my second ELP album. Mom was not happy...but that was a good thing! She finally realized that if I had my own stereo in my own room, she wouldn't have to listen to my annoying crap all day. So I dumped every last cent into a stereo.... Being a drummer in the school band, drumsticks weren't very far from me at any given time... I've ruined countless surfaces with drumstick dents in my relentless pursuit of imitating Palmer riffs... Something I do to this day... I can still remember that anytime I found myself between two parrallel desktop surfaces, they would become my imaginary bank of keyboards. I must've looked like such a retard to anybody who didn't realize I was imitating Emerson... ;-) OK, a few years and several ELP albums later, I found myself going to my first ever rock concert with my cousin. (The fighting with Mom to let me go was another entire story...). So there I was, 7/7/77, Madison. Sq. Garden with the Orchestra.... I was &^%**ing pshyched, I tell ya! They won me over that night. I was totally pie-eyed with my jaw just flappin'. Yes, there was probably an 8 year period after that when not a day would pass without me blathering away endlessly about ELP to anybody who'd listen. With hindsight, I pushed ELP on people like an airport Jesus freak. I collected all the albums that EL&P ever burped or farted on. I bought all the paraphanalia. I had all the posters and shirts. I even found a few obscure bootlegs. I was happily obsessed. So, for the last 17 years, (I'm 30!) I've been an ELP freak. I don't know if the term "freak" really applies that much anymore. Right around the time ELP crashed and burned in the 1978-79 timeframe, I became more interested in the Grateful Dead camp. Yes, the Grateful Dead! They captured me after ELP began clearing the shelves with pathetic releases like "Love Beach" and "Best Of" and "ELP Live". I am now first and foremost a Deadhead. This fall tour marks my 150th show. (Apparently, I traded one obsession with another...). Nonetheless, ELP have been and always will be a part of me. I still want to know what they're up to. I've seen just about every itereration of E, L & P live since that fateful 7/7/77 MSG show. I actually feel obligated to keep my finger on the ELP pulse. Hell, I came this far, why stop now! The Radio City Music hall show a few months ago showed me that the magic is still there... So how many people reside on this list anyway? Like, have I found ELP's other 4 fans ;-) [ Editor's note: As of today, there are about 225 people on this list! ] EDDIE ------------------------------ From: Rich Friedrich Subject: Robert Berry article To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Date: Tue, 3 Aug 93 9:25:02 PDT Robert Berry and Rick Wakeman - Cabaret, San Jose, CA 6/19/93 ------------------------------------------------------------- Rick and Adam Wakeman performed at a small club in San Jose. Robert Berry, formerly of 3, opened the set. John asked me to share this with the ELP digest readers. To read more about Rick and Adam Wakeman see "Notes from the Edge - Issue 73". This article will focus mostly on Robert Berry and the stories he told (and not his music). The Cabaret is a very small club and seats approximately 500 people. Our seats were at a table about 20 feet from the stage. We had a great view of Rick and Adam and their mountains of keyboards. Quite a contrast to stadiums and outdoor amphitheaters! The crowd was heavily biased towards those of us who listened to and grew up with Yes and Rick Wakeman in the early 1970s. Robert Berry, formerly of 3, was the opening act. He played acoustic and electric guitar and was accompanied during the second half of the show by a keyboardist (Michael Pomeroy??? I didn't catch his name). Robert lives in the area and often plays this club. He played here with 3 during their tour. Robert talked extensively during songs about the current state of progressive music, playing with Keith Emerson, Carl Palmer, Steve Howe, etc... He mentioned that his new album consisted of some material from a second 3 album that was never released. He specifically mentioned that his new album contained a 10 minute song co-written with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer, and a 7 minute song co-written with Steve Howe. Unfortunately, he did not play either of these songs. Since he didn't have a band (there was no room on the stage due to the Wakeman family keyboards!) he felt that he and his keyboardist couldn't do justice to the songs. I am interested in hearing your comments regarding these two pieces. Robert mentioned that his first interaction with Carl Palmer was when he went to work with him and the lead singer of Rainbow - they were going to form a heavy metal band! Robert was so excited about making it "big" and working in London with two of rock's finest -- a month later he was so depressed because Palmer stormed out never to return. Carl just wasn't cut out to be a heavy metal drummer. He described the awe he felt working with Keith Emerson -- how Robert would sketch out an idea and Keith would fill it in with amazing keyboard riffs. Robert's taste of fame has not changed his fun loving attitude. While performing one of the songs off of the 3 album with only an acoustic guitar he suddenly stopped and said "Now imagine this wonderful Emerson keyboard solo for a minute and a half" and without missing a beat he returned to playing the song. He bemoaned the state of progressive music -- his view is that the industry won't support the recording costs. He isn't bitter though, his proceeds from working with 3 allowed him to buy a house in Los Gatos (an affluent area near Silicon Valley). He ended his show by describing his admiration for Rick Wakeman and hoping that someday he can work with him. He also jokingly asked his keyboardist to help him remove a Korg or two from the Wakeman set-up since it was unlikely that anyone would notice one missing from such an extensive collection. He also wondered where Wakeman hid the Mellotron. -- ****************************************************************************** * * * Rich Friedrich e-mail: richf@nsa.hp.com * * * ****************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 93 09:41:33 CDT From: doug@tellabs.com To: j.arnold@bull.com Subject: Recording Any word on ELP getting back to the studio????
