ELP Info snarfed from Notes from the Edge (the Internet "Yes" digest) Prelude ======= I'm sending out this (possibly, end of year) issue now because ELP is scheduled to appear on Arsenio Hall this Thursday. And, I think, ELP's Touch and Go is schedule for a few moments at the beginning of ABC's Monday Night Football either next week or the week after. So, in case this is the last issue for the year, I wanted to think everyone for keeping the ELP Digest going this past year. We now have over 300 direct subscribers, an ftp site for back issues, and a number of regular contributors who have amazing sources for ELP information. It's been a great year for the ELP Digest. Whichever of the winter holidays you celebrate, I hope you deserve (and get) a good one! - John Arnold - ELP Digest, Editor and Mailing List Manager Digest, mailing address, and administrative stuff to: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com ==\ => the same for now ELP-related info that you / want to put in the digest to: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com =/ Back issues available via anonymous ftp: ftp site: ftp.uwp.edu user name: anonymous password: provide a full email address path: /pub/music/lists/elp/digests (There is a separate directory under this point for each year of the ELP Digest (1991, 1992, and 1993).) The orchestra has been highlighted throughout the piece. It also seems as if Keddle Drums and Triangles were added to enhance areas. Could this be an effect of the Dolby Surround? It sounds as if they took individual tracks and repositioned them so as to highlight previously minor events. Strong reverb is apparent during sections of Greg Lake's phrases. The most dramatic part, I feel, is the 'shot across the bow' effect by Carl. You can hear it in the instrumental part of the song at the beginning as well as the very end. This version of Pirates is astounding. I do prefer not adjusting existing recordings, (The designated hitter should also be done away with), however, with Atlantic Years & Return of Manticore versions of Pirates, I have the best of both worlds. What was funny about this, I purchased Return of Manticore the day it was released (11/18), and never bothered to tune into PIRATES until 12/4/93. Now I'm eager to closely hear other tunes( I'll be happy to review BSS, Dan). Also, Disc One is 70:00 in length, the shortest of the four discs. They could have fit another 3-5 minutes (Closer to Believing, Benny the Bouncer, Nutrocker, Live Aquatarkus???). I enjoy the rerecordings of 1-4 tracks on Disc One - very tight, also good guitar from Greg. The rerecorded Pictures is superb. I also received the latest copy of the ELP News Service. A great Carl Palmer interview. To become a subscriber: ELP News Service Dept. A PO BOX 884554 San Francisco, CA 94118 Carl talked about the Monday Night NFL 'Touch & Go' video. Also talked a bit about 1994 (new album & tour). He also talked extensively about the Dolby Surround & how it enhances recordings. ================================ 12/4/93 Brian Podesta ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1993 12:04:46 +0100 From: pal.gjortz@samfunnsmed.uio.no To: j.arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: Music on "Live at .." Hi, folks, At the ELP concert in Oslo 10 Nov 1992, Keith included part from the norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in one of his pieces; actually excerps from "In the Hall of the Mountain King". Can anyone tell me if that was done in any onther concerts on the same tour, or was it just a credit to the Norwegian audience ? Futher, Can anyone tell what parts of classical music ending the medley (and the album) at "Live at the Royal Albert Hall"; both the fanfare when the cheering starts, and the other when everything fades out ? P}l [ Editor's note: I think some of the closing music is by Resphigi (sp???), maybe "Birds". I'll try to see if I can find out the name more precisely. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Dec 93 23:07:34 EDT From: cat@icad.puc-rio.br (Carlos Alberto Teixeira) To: J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Subject: << CD Cover gif >> Hi, John and ELP'ers: Here goes Royal Albert Hall CD Cover gif. I read in the magazine, "Rock World", sold only in the UK, I believe, that there is a rumour that the chances are not good of Keith making a complete recovery from the operation to move nerves. In fact, the piece stated that Keith may be forced to retire, and will know for definite whether his performing days are over or not some time in February. So, if true, it could be goodbye to ELP.......forever!!! Has anyone else heard this pessimistic report from any other sources? Janis Ian was an unexpected pleasure. Ritchie Havens has a great voice, but his writing does seem a bit monotonous. Overall, I'm happy with the song selection on the boxed set, though I haven't actually listened to it all yet. All I really miss having in the set is The Three Fates (well, at least the first two ), and the first movement of the Piano Concerto. And I really would like to have had The Score on this set, I' d be curious to hear what it would sound like with Palmer instead of Powell, it's easily the best song from that album, very classic ELP-ish. Even if they used the same Emerson/Lake tracks and just had Palmer play to it, it would have been interesting. I think all my other favorites made it into the collection. I was surprised, though, that so much secondary stuff (imo) also made it, I'd rather have had the stuff I mentioned above than stuff like Tiger in a Spotlight, Fanfare (ok, I guess they had to include it, but maybe they could have cut it down), the stuff from Black Moon, Living Sin, A Time and a Place, and some of the secondary Lake stuff. Well, I guess they need a certain amount of Lake balance there, but they could have picked some better stuff... Some of the other Lake songs from Works #1 are better than some they chose here, imo. ===Scott ------------------------------ From: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca (Anil Prasad) Subject: ELP on Arsenio? I was fortunate enough to attend three of Steve's Southern California shows: at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, the Couch House in San Juan Capistrano, and the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Steve played alone, using four different guitars over two sets, and his show spanned his career, from Tomorrow to THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS. [...] To top it off I was fortunate to speak to Steve alone on more than one occasion, including a one-on-one interview that lasted an hour and a half on Thanksgiving night. We discussed his new book 'The Steve Howe Guitar Collection', the success of GRAND SCHEME, the much maligned TORMATO, the upcoming Symphonic tour, the possibility of his opening for ELP on their upcoming tour, and much more (including, yes, Regis and Kathie Lee...!). Watch out for it in the next week or so. If you were undecided as to whether to attend his concert, I have only one word for you: GO! And if you see the show and speak to him afterwards tell him you read about his show in Notes...!
