I'm about half way through the "In the Hot Seat" mail deluge. The backlog should be cleared out next week. There appears to be a bit of a split in the ELP community on this one. Some like it; others don't. And I've been too busy (getting ready to change jobs: watch for a new ELP email address) that I haven't even listened to it all yet! Heresy! Well, I'll have to put it in my car and NOT to listen to the news/traffic reports someday soon. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Oct 1994 11:22:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Charlie Green To: arnold@cyclades.ma30.bull.com Subject: a few comments on ItHs Now for a few comments on In the hot seat. When the movie started up I thought to myself that the music had a somewhat familiar feel to it. Well it turns out that Mark Mancina (Producer of Black Moon) composed and performed the music for the film. There is a soundtrack CD out as well. I saw the CD at Crow's Nest (a local CD store) but didn't buy it because I have several other more important discs on my wish list (ItHS, Kansas Box Set, Works Live, to name a few). Also, yesterday I reported to the list that Crow's Nest said they would be getting ItHS in yesterday. Well they didn't! :( I went back today and still no word as to why it was not shipped. I'm getting scared about all this delaying and talk of a break up. I hope it's all just rumors and that we'll see another CD and tour in the near future. Anybody out there connected with ELP management?? Maybe it's time to call or write to them and ask what the hell is going on. And to you guys requesting the Trilogy midi file, it will be coming soon. As a completely new user of the WWW, imagine my suprise when practically the first search string that I put into a WWW Worm is ELP and I get the ELP digest's home page!! BRILLIANT! I thought. Now here's something really useful for me to use my powerful CAD workstation for!! Anyway back to ELP and myself. I first became a fan of ELP when I was about 10 years old (1973?). At that time my elder brother (Paul Ravn) was labouring over a set of stainless steel drums, engraving the most fabulous artwork on them, horses & carts, birds, peacocks etc. It took him two years to complete the work, the drums belonged to Carl Palmer, naturally my brother had a few of their albums and he gave me some (ELP & Brain Salad Surgery). Ever since then I have enjoyed their music (some more than others!) and collected all of their albums. Tarkus being my favorite album of all time, especially the on the Island label. As an audiophile as well as an ELP fan (SAD MAN), could anyone comment on the sound quality of the mobile fidelity cut of Tarkus, as I was most disappointed with their cut of Pictures at an Exhibition. Also could any UK fans tell me where I can purchase the CD back catalogue of ELP albums, As a vinyl lover (EVEN SADDER MAN) I am non too keen on the sound quality of CD, but I am now forced to buy all of my new albums in this format, therefore I might as well see if the wife will get me all of the past ELP cuts on CD (for Christmas perhaps !!) to keep my collection complete. Anyway, must go as I've got work to do! Thanks for a great digest, please add me to the mailing list Richard Ravn-Listowski. Bristol. I picked-up IN THE HOT SEAT on the 18th! First of all, let me say that it feels really good to have a NEW ELP album in my hands!! ;-) I feel a little silly writing in about an album that everyone can listen to for themselves. Afterall, why should anyone else be interested in my opinion? If it were a rareity that one may or may not buy it would make more sense. Some have said that they find Hot Seat too much like a Greg Lake solo album. I don't think that's true at all. Greg's solo albums were dominated by guitar playing and typical rock and roll lyrics, that's definitely not true here. Anyway, it's rather like BLACK MOON, all short songs, more radio friendly than not. There are some really good songs here "Hand of Truth", "Daddy", "Change", and "Street War" are all quality ELP tunes. If you haven't yet, go buy it! Buy some copies for your friends too!! ;-) I'm really disapointed in Victory Music. They aren't promoting this album at all. Kind of the same treatment they gave "Talk". I find this especially disturbing given that Victory is rumored to have insisted that "Talk" be a Rabin produced junket, and the heavy hand of Keith Olsen on "In the Hot Seat" is likely a Victory inspiration. Who are these morons? Let the band do what they do best and just promote the album and tour. One more thing . . . Just between you and me - and whoever may be scanning this - don`t you think that Keith Olsen had WAY TOO MUCH influence on In the Hot Seat? I mean I thought Mark Mancina over produced Black Moon, but at least he'ss written with David Gilmour and Trevor Rabin, and he only wrote one tune on Black Moon. A collaboration with Geoff Downs, or someone of his caliber (not as good as ELP!) is one thing, but who are Wray, Wechsler, and Olsen? Same goes for guest backing singers and musicians. I've had the new CD for almost 3 weeks now (thanks to my local record store that sells imports). In that time I've had the chance to listen to ItHS repeatedly and I'm struck by one overriding emotion..It gets better every time I listen to it. True and valid are the arguements that it sounds more Like a Lake solo project than and ELP project but the Lake stuff is more "radio Friendly" than most of the ELP stuff. I have a feeling that this is because the nice folks at Victory probably put pressure on the group to put out a more Popish CD to get airplay (I had the same feeling with the recent Yes release Talk). This is a CD Well worth any and all support that it can be given (hit those request lines at your favorite radio station folks) it is also quite a leap from BlackMoon. The songs are well written and performed and with any luck I bet most of them will sound good when given a live workout. Perhaps if this CD is given the proper support ELP will record another CD which will be more to the likeing of Keith Emerson (and also perhaps we'll get to see more colaberation between ELP in writing the songs and not such a reliance on outside songwriters). So get out there and talk this CD up....I don't think that Victory is really going to support this release..so it's upto us. And sad to see the aggressive non marketing of ELP keeps going by Victory, Warner Bros or not. Nevertheless I really hope they get the final laugh at my pessimistic entry on their future! I have some hopes for ItHS after having made an interesting observation. At my job we have this thing called "CD circulation" where about 7 of us once a month each sends out a CD to the other on the list, for comments and points. I have earlier sent out Pictures and Trilogy (and other CD's by other artists!) and received very negative response on the SOUND (not so much on the music). It seems very much that ELP's early 70's sound does not go well down with todays audience at all, while the same people very much like early Van Morrison and Dark Side of The Moon. On a scale from 0 - 10, three of my working buds gave Pictures 3 points and three gave it 6-7. Trilogy scored a bit - but not significantly - higher. And all commented on the sound being very tiresome, even if the CD's I sent out was the remastered ones! People quite simple got turned away by "those irritating drums and synth sounds". Then, last week I sent out ItHS. The reaction was overwhelming: "Hey, I listened to it several times, and it's really DAMNED GOOD!" Other comments was on it being a very LOUD production ("I had to reduce the level to not get blown away") and it having a very substantial bass. And "I just have to get this CD!". Who would have believed it? ItHS goes it's way through the circulation list and I'll mail more comments later! Re: ELP and Monty Python I did some musings in a mail exhange with Mo! (hello!) on how ELP could have been portrayed in a MP show. If anyone else is interested in the broad theme of ELP jokes, here it goes: >Monty Python doing an ELP joke would have been almost >too funny (I can't get it out of my head, just watch those three >guys entering the stage with forty meters of keyboard >stacked on top of each other, persian rugs all over the >place making Greg so electric his hair stands out and >every thing he touch flash lightnings, drumssets rotating so >fast and so high above the stage that Carl never gets to >catch up with it a.s.o. a.s.o. And things like that. And speaking of Mo! (hello again!) Here is my comments to the Digest inquisitors on your terrible, disgusting, unforgiveable heresy: What's this about LIKING Love Beach?! Having studied psychoanalysis in depth to provide an explanation I guess the difference between you and some of us "old timers" is that we heard LB when it was released, and just broke down in tears having lost our last hope in the music business. While lucky one's like you got to it later, with none or a very negative expectation, and was pleasently surprised. Unfortunately music is not very much about "objective truth", having instead to with nasty things like emotions, feelings, personal whims and the like. If not, of course ELP would have outselled any other group (except for Beatles, or Gentle Giant, and maybe Jethro Tull, or 70's YES, and King Crimson, and Gryphon, Greenslade, Gabriel-Genesis, Anglagard, and some few others...). Much of this does sound like a G.Lake solo, however it is easy to compare to previous efforts in which instrumentals were standard in ELP releases. HAND OF TRUTH is the ELP song I have been awaiting. It is very fresh and has the ELP "coolness" that was prevelant during the heyday period. MAN IN THE LONG BLACK COAT is done extremely well Keith's presecence fits perfectly with the tone of the song. DADDY, THIN LINE, ONE BY ONE, HEART ON ICE, and CHANGE are very good. On the down side, tracks 8 thru 10 give ItHS the Greg Lake solo album feel. GONE TOON SOON is a poor effort. STREET WAR is rather forgettable. Overall, this is decent work. If your looking for 10-15 minutes epics or instrumentals, you won't find it here & I doubt that ELP is pursuing this track any longer. If the rumors of disgruntled ELP are founded, and we should wait & see if we get direct quotes from Keith, this could be their last collective and official effort. On one listen, I would have to say that while nothing (with the possible exception of "Hand of Truth") really jumped up and grabbed me, all the songs have the potential to grow on me. In fact, I'd say the album will REQUIRE multiple close listens to appreciate it. I look forward to the process. Unfortunately, the bonus track reported to be on the Japanese CD is not there, but there is another copy of Pictures from ROTM. I took this as an opportunity to reevaluate my earlier assessment of the remake. I was much kinder this time, really rather liking it. (I HATE gospel choirs, though!) However, Greg really sounds like he is stretching his voice to the breaking point, and at times it is almost pathetic. I wish they had rearranged the piece to suit the lower register he now sings in. I had hoped this was a problem Greg could get over (his voice was so weak on "Regis and Kathy Lee" that I thought the performance would drive people away, rather than attracting new fans). But I'm afraid there has been permanent damage. As long as he keeps in a lower register and doesn't try to project too much, it's OK, but even on a song like "Change," this voice problems are evident. I fear that it may be Greg's voice, not Keith's arm, that will keep ELP from touring or even (knock wood) releasing another album. ------------------------------ From: m.burns@genie.geis.com Date: Thu, 27 Oct 94 03:16:00 UTC To: arnold@cyclades.ma30.bull.com Subject: ELP news update John, I very much enjoyed reading your ELP digest, and have lots to contribute at this time. I spoke with Greg for quite a while at the one radio station and he is quite serious about helping the Sara Anne Wood Rescue Center. I did not hear all of the on-air talk as It was all not audible from the area I was sitting next to the studio (DID ANYONE RECORD HIS APPEARANCE ON WPLJ TUESDAY AM?? I would love a copy!) An interview he did at the station explaining the center and ELP's involvement was to be shown on several NYC news programs last evening (my friend saw mention of the promotion on wcbs news in NYC ) also, At WPLJ , Greg presented to Mr Wood (in person) a check for $5000. Today, Greg appeared on Scott Muni's Hard Rock Cafe anniversary broadcast for WNEW_FM. This I did hear on the radio (AGAIN-DID ANYONE RECORD THIS? ) while waiting for a dr's appointment. Greg started with singing (acoustic) Lucky Man and went into Heart On Ice from ITHS. He then spoke with Scott for about 8 minutes. I took notes so here's what I have: When asked about how Keith wrist's recovery, Greg proceded to explain that he had 'a nerve moved from here to there' (remember, this was a live broadcast at the HardRock, so he was showing the audience) and he said "but he's okay" When asked about ELP doing a 25th anniversary tour, he replied "We hope to tour" Greg went into the story of seeing America's Most wanted and Mr Wood talking about what happend to his daughter. This in turn inspired Greg to write the song Daddy. Later, they decided to help the charity by donating the procedes of the sale of Daddy to the Center. Greg spoke of why Pictures was included on ITHS, he wanted people who may have not been able to afford the box set to hear Pictures. Greg's manager then mentioned something to Greg, and he reminded Scott that Scott was the first person in America to play Pictures on the air back in the early '70's. the title ITHS- Greg said that ELP was always the subject of "scathing criticism" they were always in the hot seat in one way or anther, so the title fit! Feelings about ITHS- Greg spoke about them doing the box set just prior starting ITHS- he said after just doing a retrospect of their careers (each also doing a song from thier former bands),, they wanted to do something new and fresh. They found Keith Olsen who bought refreshing new energy to the project. I think that was about it (most of above is from direct quotes off the air) Scott said he looked forward (to Iths ) taking it on the road and to wish Keith the best. (my comment--no mention of Carl at all) So that was about it for the last two days! the following is the press release I obtained from ELP's publicist in regards to their involvement with the Sara Anne Wood Rescue Center. "Daddy" was written and recorded by Greg Lake as was inspired by the actual story of the 1993 kidnap/murder of Sara Anne Wood. Sara's father, Robert Wood, has established the national non-profit organization in her memory, to raise awareness of the tragedy of missing children and to assist others in their search. The Sara Anne Wood Rescue center funds the production and distribution of flyers, posters, and toehr imformation that is crucial in the efforts of locating missing children. Robert Wood, and his wife Frances, have also been credited with legislative victories in the state of New York, helping gain the passage of several bills aimed at child protection. "Daddy" is the featured track on EmersonLake and Palmer's forhtcoming album "In the Hot Seat" (Victory Music). The album will be in stores Oct 18th. On Oct 25, in NYC, Greg Lake will personally present an intial check for $5000 to the Sara Anne Wood Rescue Center. "Daddy" first aired on radio station WKBQ FM in St Louis and Scott Shannon's radio show on WPLJ FM in NYC. Listener reaction was overwhelming in these and other subsequent markets, reflecting the nation's growing concern about the 4,600 children in the United STates she are abducted by strangers every year.
