Don't know about those days last week but a decent excuse today. Just as I was about to dial-in to my Internet provider, we lost power. Oh well. As has become more of a custom than expected, I've taken a few of the more "timely" articles out of order in including them here. Mary Ann brings us news of a new Emerson collection on CD (not all new stuff but sounds like a good collection). And the folks pluggin a "History of Rock" TV special here in the USA have provided some on-line info. Though I honestly don't know if there's any ELP to be found in this history or not. Other than that... the usual good talk about the band. More later this week. Thanks for continuing to hang in there with me. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: m.burns@genie.geis.com Date: Sat, 25 Feb 95 05:58:00 UTC To: arnold@iii.net Subject: New Emo cd info, GL and CP upd Hello to all Digest readers! Kevin Gilbert went on a L.A. radio station back in 1991 and played 2 songs..."changing States" and "montagues and Capulets" these 2 songs later appeared on "black Moon" so these songs are demos and stuff, Keith was doing before he rejoined greg and carl.....Kevin Gilbert was shopping them around for years...these were also known as "cream of emerson soup" songs. (note: I have a copy of the cream of emerson soup--GREAT stuff!! MAB) The Abaddon's Bolero might be the one from '77 that was featured on a Superstar radio Broadcast back in 1977 and also pop up on an Atlantic Promo..An Evening with....ELP interview and music lp. KEITH worked with Marc bonilla on his "E=ticket Ride Cd."Marc Bonilla is a friend of Kevin Gilbert...Kevin Gilbert is up a Grammy this year for writing a song for Sheryl Crow..He wrote most of the songs on her debut Cd..Gilbert also wrote a song for Madonna......it was on the Dick Tracy soundtrack...."The Church" is the title track from the Dario D'argento thriller "The Church" which is availible here in the U.S. on video. Montagues and the Capulets" is Romeo and Juliet since that is their last name....this version is similar to Black Moon...but the Black Moon version is better... .Thank you......Cheers..Mister Ed...(any spelling errors are ED's!) ***************** a note on the GL data base. I have forwarded the list to GL's manager (you can still get on the list, just email me) and plans are still not final as to what they're going to do. I think it's a play on words on Carnival, especially since there are many verses about "seeing the show" as well as the different acts you can find there, similar to a carnival. Also, someone once suggested on alt.music.progressive that the 9 was Keith Emerson making fun of Robert Schumann's Carnaval, Op. 9. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jan 1995 12:19:27 -0800 From: Jim Smith To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Whip Some Skull On Me Reply-To: smithj@sr.hp.com I probably won't be the only one to answer this question, nevertheless... I have heard ELP express a sentiment to this effect in a few interviews. The first impression is sort of like a carnival of a projected culture where humanity is not so highly valued (or something to that effect). Why nine? I don't know. Three guys playing three impressions, maybe? Has anyone heard the "KE9: fourth impression" that some US keyboardist did? >The same applies to another song, > "Brain Salad Surgery". It is just slang? Yes. This is slang for fellatio, ie, oral sex with a man. If you look closely at the Giger painting of the woman on the inside of the cover of the Brain Salad Surgery album, you may notice a "ghost" of the head of a penis on her neck. When asked what Brain Salad Surgery meant on the radio show "Rockline" in 1992, Keith Emerson jokingly replied: "Er, it means the same thing as 'Whip Some Skull On Me.' I don't know what that means. Do you know what that means?" By the way, I just picked up the "limited edition" Victory CD of BSS, and wanted to comment on the pictures of ELP in there. There were _two_ versions of those pictures in LP releases of BSS. The original pictures were different than those in later pressings of the LP. The pictures in the Victory CD are, I believe, the later pictures. I heard a rumor at the time that the pictures were changed because either Emerson, Lake, or Palmer didn't like the first ones. Also, by the way, I saw "Love Beach" in the cutout bin at Tower Records. I wonder if Victory is dropping this title. Unfortunately, it was not mentioned in the Radio Times and so I knew absolutely nothing about it. By amazing co-incidence (I NEVER listen to radio 2!!) I was turning the dial, trying to find another station when I heard 'Knife Edge' playing - I was very surprised and so it took quite a while to place it! - I rushed to stick a tape in, but ofcourse I'd missed the first 10 or so minutes and the sound was bad as I hadn't had chance to tune the radio properly. As of yet I've found nobody who is even aware of this broadcast let alone who has a good quality tape of it - so if anyone out there has then please let me know (Only Europe though .. I can't afford to post tapes to America ... I have lots of other tapes to swap ... also from Yes, Genesis, Barclay James Harvest, Tull, Marillion etc.) I'd love to hear it properly as the performance was superb - the drum solo in 'Pictures' was edited short (GOOD MOVE!) and the broadcast included the tracks Paper Blood, Close to Home, Creole Dance, From the Beginning (WHY was this not included on the LATRAH CD?!), Romeo and Juliet, Pictures and the encore. In the article, a statement is made "that the new ELP album is almost complete, with Greg Lake putting down the vocals in a California studio. The new album should be ready for release this summer, and the working title is The Best Seat in the House." The article goes on to state "that the new album promises to be another radical departure for ELP musically ... and a promotional tour will start in the US in July" (1994). Of course, the tour never happened, the album became In the Hot Seat, and the "radical musical departure" has become a bit of a disappointment to long time ELP fans. The article also commented on Emerson's hands, with Keith saying that the operation to free the blockage on the ulna nerve was a success, but an extended period of physical rehabilition would be required to build strength, perhaps six months or more. I guess it remains to be seen if Keith will play at the Keyboard concert in Anaheim this month (January). For his sake and ours, let's hope so! I would like to pick up on Mark McCarron-Fraser's review, especially concerning his comments on the track "For Those Who Dare". It is most definitely NOT written in support pf guerilla/terrorist groups but was in fact directly inspired (according to Greg himself) by an incident in London, in which the Iranian Embassy was occupied by Middle Eastern terrorists and several hostages were taken. The Embassy was eventually stormed by the Bristish Army's "crack" Special Air Service unit (SAS), all surviving hostages were freed and the terrorists killed - this was all televised live by the BBC! Greg said in a 1981 US radio interview that he "couldn't help but be impressed and touched by the fact that people were prepared to risk their lives to protect other people's freedom". The motto of the SAS, "Who Dares, Wins" (as mentioned by John previously) provided the inspiration for the song's title - so here's the full story! Judging by the tone on his part of the interview, I don't think Mr. Lake holds any "romanticized" notion about the types of groups Mark mentioned. If anybody else has picked up on this already, my apologies - I'm several months behind on the Digest! Regards to all from "Lovejoy" country!
