Prelude ======= Happy ! Please think about if you or someone you know may have high quality concert photos of the Greg Lake solo tour back whenever. As my first note to this Digest says, they're hoping to release this on CD and are looking for photos for the cover, liner notes, or promotional materials. Just as the backlog was getting under control, it's boomed again. So, I'm trying to stick to a weekkly schedule (or more often?) until it's cleared out again. Watch the enxt issue for an announcement of an ELP Convention in September this year... in England and being put on by some British ELP fans. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: arnold@iii.net Date: Thu, 13 Apr 1995 15:07:34 -0500 To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Help me help Greg Lake... Hi! I just got off the phone with Greg Lake's manager. He and Greg are on a tight schedule trying to get a performance of the "Greg Lake Band" (from the tour with Gary Moore promoting the first solo album) released as part of the King Biscuit Flower Hour CD series. They're hoping for a June 95 release. Anyway, they're looking for a very good quality (right in front of the stage, pro quality, etc., etc.) photo or photos of Greg in the 1978-mid1980s for possible inclusion in the CD packaging or the promotional materials for the album. Here are the requirements/preferences: 1. Greg only or Greg Lake Band photo (or a Works tour through ELPowell era photo which could be cropped to show only Greg). 2. Greg playing guitar (acoustic or electric), not bass. 3. Color preferred but B&W may be OK. 4. Greg's face clearly visible 5. High quality negative or slide available If you can provide or help provide a pointer to a source for a photo like this, please contact me by sending me email to: arnold@iii.net As soon as possible... The photographer will get credit, get paid the going rate for this kind of thing, etc. Anyone who can help identify a source for a picture like this but who isn't the photographer him/herself would most likely get mentioned in the liner notes to the album. Remember, the photo has got to be good enough for publication so the closer to pro quality, the better. Thanks! Send any leads (preferably with phone number since time is important) to me as soon as you can and I will pass them along (attributed to you, of course) to Greg's manager. - John - ------------------------------ From: alexm@vnet.IBM.COM Date: Mon, 27 Feb 95 05:50:53 EST To: arnold@iii.net Subject: ELP Rarities At a record and CD fair at the weekend I picked up a couple of ELP bootlegs. The first is a double CD called, Live At Jones Beach, recorded in New York on the 25th of July 1992. This features the track Farewell To Arms which was removed from the set list by the time the Black Moon tour reached Europe. I remember reading an interview with the band at the time, and the reason given for this was that it killed the pace of the show. I have to be honest and confess that I suspected that this was just an excuse, and the real reason was likely to be that Greg was having trouble singing the song live. Having listened to the CD, and also watching a video of the same concert, which I also bought at the fair, it seems that the rather ponderous treatment which they gave to Farewell To Arms may well have left the audience rather subdued. Can anyone who was at one of the early shows on the tour confirm this? The other CD I bought is Pirates, a gold plated disc on the Missing In Action label. This is a superb quality bootleg and well worth seeking out. One rare item included at the end is a brief radio interview with the band, given to a Canadian radio station where they introduce a full orchestral version of Abaddon's Bolero, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. If anyone is interested in a tape trade of either of the above, or any other live material please contact me by E-mail. Oz, To answer your question (at the risk of offending some), a "BSS" is the same thing as a Blow Job. Somehow it is derived from the slang expression, "Whip some skull on me" and was some sort of private joke amongst the band. (I think I remember reading this in a Greg Lake interview, but am not sure). If you listen to the lyrics of "BSS", the song, you'll notice that this connotation is hinted at. The Giger artwork also has a subtle visual reference. Look at the shaft with the ELP logo, under the women's mouth. At the top of the shaft, the area is deliberately hilighted. (This is no accident). BTW, if you're familiar with Giger's normal work, the BSS cover is very tame! -- Chris Cowan ceez@bga.com ------------------------------ From: bjorn-are.davidsen@s.hk.telenor.no Date: Fri, 3 Mar 1995 15:16:09 +0100 To: John E Arnold Subject: ELP TRADING Re: ELP TRADING I would like just once more to remind you all of the really good and golden ELP stuff which may be traded from Massimo Cavalucci, Via M. He's interested in (and has a LOT of) audio/video tapes, 7", CD singles, CD live, articles and so on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Get going. Stamps are cheap! For anyone knowing Italian, Massimo just sent me a copy of the Italian Magazine "Percussion" of Nov 94 with article and interview with Carl. From my interpretation it seems like the article is positive about Carl's playing on ItHS (e.g. "Thin Line" "riconfermano Carl Palmer come un batterista eleganta, capace di sfumaturea stilistiche basate sulla precione ed il tocco dell'esecuzione pacta!"). Carl also seems to have been doing some experimentation with interplay with a drum machine, as he says that: "Man in the Long Black Coat" che contiene una combinazione a mio avviso molto interessante di drum machine, quelle che io definisco real drummer, un experimento molto riuscito". That should be crystal clear, shouldn't it? The article contains analysis of Carls percussion work throughout ELP's career and goes on for 8 pages (including some pictures and notes). Any Italian (and English...) speaking fans who'd like to make a summary or translation? I'll send anyone interested a copy! What I thought I heard: "I'm tired of pick-up re-boots tossing their beets turning their eyes as they speak." Did anyone else have trouble with this line? 2) Alberto Ginastera I recently purchased 3 Ginastera CD's on the ASV label: Catalog Number Title -------------- ------ CD DCA 865 The Complete Piano Music Vol. 1 CD DCA 880 The Complete Piano Music Vol. 2 CD DCA 654 Ginastera I recommend getting these. Here's why: 2a) Toccata The 3rd CD tracks 8-11 contains the entire "Piano Concerto No. 1 (Opus 28)". The 4th movement on track 11 is "Toccata Concertata (Presto)". This piece is the one that was turned into "Toccata" on BSS. It's interesting to compare Ginastera's original with ELP's adaption. 2b) Best Revenge The 2nd CD tracks 10-12 contains "Tres Piezas (Opus 6)". No. 1 on track 10 is "Cuyana". Compare this to "Best Revenge (Dream Runner)". 2c) Piano Concerto The 2nd CD track 24 contains "Piano Sonata No. 3 (Opus 55)". The subtitle is "In one movement (Impetuosamente)". Compare this to "Piano Concerto - Movement No. 3 (Toccata Con Fuoco)". Note that Ginastera wrote this in 1982, after the Piano Concerto was done! 2d) Creole Dance Although multiple studio versions of Creole Dance exist, none have been released. Keith has been publicly performing this piece as far back as the Emerson, Lake and Powell tour in 1986! (The concert review article that appeared in the paper after the ELPowell Great Woods, Mansfield MA concert listed "Gay Dogs" as one of the pieces performed. Apparently due to Keith's English Accent the reviewer misinterpreted "Creole Dance" as "Queer Dogs" and politically corrected it!) Every time I have seen this piece performed it has been different. It seems to be a tribute to many of the more energetic piano pieces of Ginastera. The following tracks from the 1st and 2nd CDs seem to constitute the main themes and appear in every version of "Creole Dance" that I have heard: Volume Track Title ------ ----- ----- 12 American Preludes (Opus 12) - (Doce Preludios Americanos) 1 5 No. 1 "Accents" 1 7 No. 3 "Creole Dance" 1 10 No. 6 "Tribute to Roberta Garcia Morillo" 1 11 No. 7 "Octaves" 1 13 No. 9 "Tribute to Arron Copeland" 1 15 No. 11 "Tribute to Heitor Villa-Lobos" 2 12 Tres Piezas (Opus 6) No. 3 "Criolla" 2 13 Malambo (Opus 7) Suite de Danzas Criollas (Opus 15) 2 18 "Scherzando - Coda: Presto ed Energico" The following tracks have themes that were used but not in every version: Volume Track Title ------ ----- ----- Danzas Argentinas (Opus 2) 1 1 No. 1 "Danza del viejo boyero" 1 3 No. 3 "Danza del gaucho matrero" 1 4 "Pequena Danza" - from "Estancia (Opus 8)" Piano Sonata No. 1 (Opus 22) 1 17 1st movement "Allegro Marcato" 1 18 2nd movement "Presto Misterioso" 1 20 4th movement "Ruvido ed Ostinato" Does anyone have any transcriptions of "Creole Dance" by ELP? 3) Archaeology In digging through back issues of the ELP-Digest I came across 3 people with potential contributions to the sheet music effort. But what does it really mean? The Keyboard magazine article mentions spring cleaning. But could this be more significant? Think about it. The inability to get concept pieces approved by the music industry. The release of ITHS. The divorce. The arm injury that never seems to be "all better now". Could this spell the end of not only ELP but Emerson too? I hope not! Is Keith Emerson retiring from music altogether? Great Copeland's ghost! If performance is out, I would still hope that he continues as a composer. And work on publishing his missing (and strongly wanted) sheet music. And also make available all of his unreleased songs. I hope I'm wrong about all this, but only time will tell... Steve Plotczyk [ Editor's note: I'm not quite so alarmed. Hi, Being somewhat new to the digest, I can see that the opinions of the latest cd have been less than favorable. I, myself have not heard it and my prior suspicions seem to have confirmed that it was a pop outing. My question is: With all their talents why not do something a little more daring ? Is it beyond reason ? I'm not implying that ELP rehash the old sound. I think they would re gain some widespread respect if they pooled their resources together and really kicked some butt. Carl Palmer was one of my idols. What a great drummer. Lately (post-Asia) he sounds nothing more than an nondecript ordinary rock drummer. Its a collective issue. Can't Keith come up with some inventive, stimulating material ? Like but unlike the old. These guys should be progressing. Have they resigned themselves on being a pop band ? The most recent cd I have is the one before last. (title escapes me). It was ok but I was extremely disappointed with the output. Have others on this digest addressed these issues. Finally, I grew up with ELP and have joined this list only with the hope that I'll discover that they're gonna get serious...and start utilizing the awesome talents that they possess...
