Some detail on the Carl Palmer "Applied Rhythms" book, an Emerson CD-ROM of sounds for Akai samplers, and a pointer to someone who's transcribed KE9 Impressions 2 and 3! He was talking to Will Alexander. ELP is officially broken up again! And Greg Lake has moved to New York. [ Editor's note: Though there does seem to be some disagreement from various sources about whether ELP has "broken up", it does appear that they are, at least, taking on various solo projects. Oh well. I hope those projects continue to see the light of day and I hope for a revived ELP once the status of Keith's recovery is more certain. - John - ] 2) EMERSON CD-ROM Attention keyboard players! They have quite a negatively biased view of ELP. An excerpt from the E is for ELP entry: "...ELP can stake some claim to being the most overblown and pretentious of all Prog groups ... pushed to the limit the standard Prog mix of pseudo-Baroque classical influences, extended drum and keyboard solos, Neanderthal rock theatrics, deep and meaningless lyrics" The rest of the entry is just as unflattering unfortunately. Most of the other groups listed did not fare any better. One can hardly wait for part two of the article?!?! If people want to hear music in the spirit of ELP, and we think that ELP isn't going to make this music themselves, then there are tons of lesser-known progressive rock albums out there that may satisfy you. For example: ARTIST ALBUM ================================================================ Mastermind Volume Two: Brainstorm Syndone Inca Le Orme Contrappunti Triumvirat Spartacus L'Uovo di Colombo L'Uovo di Colombo New Trolls UT Probably many of you are unfamiliar with these albums, except perhaps "Spartacus." (Some people don't like Triumvirat because they are considered ELP clones. But don't let that prevent you from trying the other bands! You'll probably like some of them.) There are hundreds of other interesting, little-known prog bands out there. I've listed ONLY the ones I can think of that have a heavy ELP influence. The New Trolls album has only one or two tracks that are very ELPish, but the rest of the material is also very good. All of these albums are available from various prog mailorder stores like Syn-Phonic, Ranjit Padmabhan (ranjit@netcom.com), Laser's Edge (lasercd@aol.com), Doug Larson (201-226-6332), and others. (I think it may have even been a "joke".) Anyway, someone in their management or media had gotten wind of this and unexpectedly showed up to press conference or photo shoot with 3 Ladders, expecting EL&P to pose with them. I think they were pretty surprised by this. I think E may have talked about this in one of his 4 or 5 interviews in Keyboard Magazine. BTW, he had a short-lived column in Keyboard during the early 80's. He explained that on subsequent albums, he was very careful to credit his "sources". (This led into his story about visiting Ginastera to get his blessing to use Toccata on BSS!) At first, I thought he got into trouble just for Knife Edge. However, I later discovered (since I've been playing piano for 22 years myself!) that Knife Edge wasn't the only song on "ELP", that may have had "problems". The amount of borrowing in the "Barbarian" is just as bad, if not worse than "Knife Edge". It is almost a direct quotation of Bela Bartok's, Allegro Barbaro. (The first time I heard the Bartok piece, I was quite surprised!!!) This leads to some speculation: I suspect that KE and/or ELP may have gotten into a legal tangle with Bartok's family/estate (BTW, Bartok died in the late 40's or early 50's if I remember correctly). This may explain why ELP never seemed to play the Barbarian live. I'm certain that they had lots of requests to do so! I'll bet not too many of you were aware of this!!! He said that no music had ever existed.... until now! I recently met up with Dr. Brent Wood through The Internet. He has recently finished transcribing "Karn Evil 9, 2nd and 3rd Impression". You can reach him at: wood@mail.labmed.washington.edu He's a physician who is also a big ELP fan and probably a really good keyboard player in his own right. I recently got a copy of his transription of the the 2nd and 3rd Impressions and was blown away at the accuracy and detail that he took in his transcription. He transcribed parts that I have never heard in over 20 years of listening to KE 9. He also did his transcription on Finale which is a great computer musical notation software package. It is clean, neat and easy to read. He will send you a copy of his work for just a few bucks ($3 I think). This is an incredible deal. Be sure and tell him how much you appreciate his work. Anyway,, A question I would very much like to have included in the digest is; Is there anyone out there who could be interested in sending me copies of ELP videos ??,, I have today only these items, ELP - In Concert 77- 90min, The Best ( With E. )in japan, Welcome back documentary,, What I'm interrested in most is Live videos from US tv or anything. I can't offer much video stuff for trading,, Instead I have for instance a couple of old bootlegs and a couple of radio promos that I could either tape to cassete or Dat. Also,, I have Emerson's different Italian soundtracks, including the Church...And if anybody can stand it, I have the really, really awful PM album. Ps,, A couple of notes to anyone whos interested, This has maybe been said before,, but,, if not,,,,well, Emerson can also be found on a couple of other guys albums, one is with Roy Harper, I think it's called flat baroque and berserk, and I know that he also appeared on an album called music from free creek. Others say that he played on Rod Stewart an old raincoat. Is that true ??
