Hi! I received a very nice note from the folks at Sundown Records asking us to please be patient while they begin to ship our copies of Keith's Christmas CD. I gather that some people have been calling to check the status of their order, inquire about actual ship dates, etc. Sundown certainly seems to care a lot about customers satisfaction but they are a small company that has a substantial line of Christmas-related CDs to ship. This includes our orders as well as orders for record "jobbers" and dealers around the country. Since they're a small outfit, it could be that frequent calls about our orders actually slow them down (since ther person who answers the phone may have been packing orders for shipment when the phone rang). So, I'd like to suggest that we do them a favor (which may actually help us get our orders more quickly: instead of calling to ask about your order but you need to know that it's being processed, please fax them your request for an order status update. Their fax number is 805-499-9047. This way, they can batch the requests and handle them during breaks between order packing and more efficiently handle them. Also, they told me that after a brief lag in filling orders (while they waited for the CDs, etc. to arrive), they're currently shipping orders within ~2 weeks from receiving them so they still should be received in time for Christmas if you order them soon. Hope this helps us all! - John - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Sep 1995 23:00:31 -0400 From: John E Arnold To: arnold@iii.net Subject: Greg Lake news... According to Greg Lake's manager.... "The double CD career anthology for Greg Lake is scheduled to be released in March 1996 and, hopefully, will coincide with a solo Greg Lake North American tour." Sounds good to me! Can't wait to see the track list of the CD. I hope to see some King Crimson, ELP rarities, and some solo stuff (including some of the good stuff off "Manoeuvres"). - John - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 1995 13:27:43 -0400 To: John E Arnold Subject: an open letter... From: janiel@pipeline.com (Janie Lindenbaum) Dear Mr. Arnold: Last year I wrote a letter to the ELP News Service ( I think it's through the fan club), but having never received an answer or acknowlegement of receipt, I do not know if my message went through. This month I went online for the first time, and when I found the ELP home page and this digest, I became hopeful that I might be able to get this off my chest. I hope that these three who are among the most brilliantly talented and creative men in the world will somehow be made aware of my gratitude. I am hoping that you and your digest will allow me ..... What follows is a copy of my letter: ---------------- August 3, 1994 Hello, This letter is going to start out a bit strangely, but please bear with me. There IS a purpose. I'm writing to you from the bedside of my son, Gregory Stuart. I have enclosd a snapshot of him taken when he was four days old (he was born on 6/29/94)/ At twelve days old Gregory had a seizure in the middle of the night, and after bringing him to the emergency room, the doctors discovered that he had bacterial meningitis. He has beem in the intensive-care unit ever since. There is a tube in his head now to drain fluid from his brain, a long-term intravenous tube, and a feeding tube, but he is no longer on a respirator. The reason for this letter, however is not to depress you with the status of this total stranger, but to say thank you for giving me (and Greg) something constant for us to hold onto throughout this ordeal. All during my pregnancy I played and sang quite a lot of music. But each night, before I went to sleep, I played the same song: "Watching Over You." When Greg was born, I did the same for him every night. Even if he didn't drift off to sleep, he ALWAYS calmed down. Now he is in the hospital and I am not permitted to hold him because of all the tubes and wires. Nothing is familiar to him, nor is there any way he can be comfortable. He needed SOMETHING to be constant, so I wrote out the lyrics to the song, taped it over his bed, and each night I play it for him before I leave while I stroke his cheek or hold his tiny hand. He always calms down, and consequently, so do I. I can at least feel that I am doing something to let him know I'm there and that I love him. September 21,1994 I would like to finish this letter now. So much has happened that I nearly forgot to send it... Gregory Stuart is gone now. He died last week, two weeks after his second brain surgery. He was eleven weeks old. Still that does not change one iota the amount of gratitude I owe you. I am forever in your debt for the hours and hours of enjoyment I received through your music over the years and now for the comfort that same music has brought to me throughout the sickness of my son. The lyrics, so beautiful and comforting that my sister-in-law read them at the baby's funeral. I can only hope that G-d's littlest angel is now up in heaven watching over us. You three make more than music together.... you make magic. Thank you forever, Janie Lindenbaum -------------------- Thank you, Mr Arnold, for your time and patience. I really hope this won't be an inappropriate place for my letter... but if it is... could you tell me a way I can get it to the proper place? And... just to update you.. on June 26, 1995 (three days before what would have been Gregory's 1st birthday) his little sister, Rebecca Leigh, was born... and she loves the song too!! --Janie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Sep 1995 09:46:06 -0400 (EDT) From: J-P Palmentier To: ELP Digest Subject: Keith Emerson CD Hi! I have been reading the ELP Digests for the last little while about Keith Emerson's Changing States CD and finally special ordered it from my local HMV store. No store in Toronto seemed to be carrying it. Oh well. While she was on the computer doing the order, I asked her to see what other titles were available under his name. The usual list ... HONKY and all the soundtracks for the European films he did and a 2 CD set called BEST WORKS COLLECTION from Leading Edge CD Incorp (cat # JICK89169). I ordered it anyway because I'm an Emerson and ELP fan, but has anybody heard anything about this CD? Also, on the new King Biscuit Greg Lake CD, does my name (Jean-Paul Palmentier) appear on the list of photographic credits? Apparently, two of my photographs (B&W) were used but I haven't received any money for them or a copy of the CD. Thanks and keep up the excellent work on the Digest. J-P [ Editor's note: I don't think your name is on the liner notes. But the liner notes in my copy are not the correct, final liner notes (according to Greg's manager). I hope this gets corrected in he next batch. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Sep 1995 12:18:57 -0500 (CDT) From: Antonio Augusto Gorni ep - pmt 0132 671805 To: martin@itd.adelaide.edu.au cc: arnold@iii.net Subject: Black Moon 92-93 Tour Video in PAL format Yes, (unfortunately for me :-( ), there is a PAL version of the video about the Black Moon 92-93 Tour Video. Let me explain why I said 'unfortunately for me'! I bought this video in Italy last June, and I simply forgot to check its format before the purchase. Here in Brazil we have a weird color TV system, called PAL-M, a frankenstein hybrid between the German color system PAL and the black and white American M system. So, the standard VCR's here only can use tapes recorded in the PAL-M or NTCS system. PAL-M is the native system, and the standard VCR's have a transcoder system to translate NTSC into PAL-M. The problem is that tapes recorded in the original PAL format do not run on PAL-M VCRs. So, the ELP tape I bought is useless for me, unless I add a circuit to my VCR adapting it to this system. I think I'll rather buy this ELP video again, but in NTSC format - it's a more secure alternative... I think the tape I bought is British. If you want, I can send you the address and additional details about the company that issued this tape. Check the web page for back issues if you didn't see it. - John - ] O.K. here we go. The author met Keith at NAMN last winter so the info are accurate up to then! Keith now resides in Santa Monica. He brought along his faithfull friend/technician/musician Will Alexander and they are wor- king(as we know)on the animated serie IRON MAN. He is involved in reissuing his early material on CD. He tried to run the original magnetic tapes of HONKY and the oxyde came off! They had to BAKE the tapes in order to run them! Bake tapes!!!! He is trying to get the rights of NIGHTHAWKS and has an album ready called OFF THE SHELF with a lot of orchestral pieces. They also found unreleased NICE original mate- rial in the BBC vaults. He talked about the trumpet debate with the London P.Orchestra. In 1980, he tried to work with them on some projects where the demands on the trum- pet players were very high (notes out of reach for most players). The LPO made fun of him and said they would not "lower" their standards for a rock musician!!!!(in fact they had a hard time playing it). A few years later, K.E. heard the LPO doing TOMMY because of financial reasons and he felt real unhappy. I had read the same story about G.Vanelli and his sessions with the LPO. One final note: I just picked up a vinyl copy of NIGHTHAWKS and, as many movie sountracks, it is mostly atmosphere music not so interesting(after only one listening mind you!)BUT BUT Keith actually sings I'M A MAN(the S. Windwood song). It was the first time I heard him sing. It is not that great but it is on key!! It would be really nice if they could also get their hands on Keith's own catalog. I don't understand why Keith's solo stuff is not marketed the same as ELP's. Even casual ELP fans would be interested. Right now, locating copies of CDs such as Best Revenge, MurderRock, Honky, The Christmas Album, Nighthawks, Inferno, Harmageddon and, to a lesser extent, Changing States, is quite an undertaking. And when you finally find what you want, you litterally have to mortgage your soul in order to get the damn thing ($ 45.00 US, plus shipping. It means $ 55.00--$ 60.00 Canadian currency--the price of 4 "normal" CDs). Why can't we have access to an american pressing of these titles at reasonable prices? Maybe Will Alexander could oblige us all by conveying the message to Keith? We showered & shaved in our Hotel to maintain some semblance of good grooming and order. To the local IHOP we went and met MIDI MASTR along the way. A quick exchange of hellos and a promise to meet later in a few hours at the MusicTech. Our cab arrived the purple encrusted Radisson Hotel for Professor Emerson's lecture on music & composition. The show was videotaped (sacre bovinus) and should be available at some point in time (patience please) for a nominal fee. The professor spoke on 5 main areas - the surgery, the autobiography, composition, inspiration, and of course, music. Of particular significance, it should be noted that this was Emerson's first public performance since the Hungerthon Benefit show in New York City (11/93). He proved the surgery to be a great success though "at least 2 years" of physical therapy will still be required. Movement and grace were still evident on the keys as the audience was enraptured by the sounds of Tarkus (with the audience orchestrated and lead by Will Alexander playing Kazoos), Close to Home aka Ballade, Glorietta (Pass)(new material) , and Green Onions (previously unreleased material). It was announced that Keith Emerson's Christmas Album, completely remastered including two new tracks (14 minutes of new music) will be available in a few weeks from Sundown Records, P.O. Box 241, Newbury, CA 91320. Cassettes ($9.98), CD ($15.98) and autographed CDs ($21.98). Preorders will be accepted by calling 1-800-825-4106. A caricature of Emerson in Santa hat & boots has been designed by Keith Bell which will appear as the album artwork. News and these are all possible and yet unconfirmed.... Symphonic ELP CD, possible shows with Pittsburgh Symphony and Orchestra of the Pacific (?). Possible joint E(L&P?) venture with YES. Remastering of all Emo solo ventures (movie scores and such). Autobiography to be released in the coming year (funny his story we feel is not yet finished, it may have just begun -Rik & Ken). The book will released with a CD of Emerson Jazz music. The author shared some hilarious moments meeting Leonard Bernstein which shall we say is best left for the video and book. ELP video from the Royal Albert Hall should have been released already, maybe in the next few weeks. He shared moments of inspiration - Celtic music found on the shores of Mexico. The 5 bridges suite written on an airline motion sickness bag. He remained after the show to meet with the over 350 fans and to sign autographs for all who attended Prof. Emerson's class.
