Bjo/rn Are --------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCING "IMPRESSIONS" NEW EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER MAGAZINE! February sees the release of a new ELP magazine, "Impressions". During the ELP Convention last year, it became evident to the Organisers that there is a demand for an ELP News Service, so we decided to do something about it! I was appointed Editor for this new magazine and together with a handfull of my ELP friends, I have compiled a 30 page journal packed with interviews, reports, features and reviews on the band, the biggest feature being a World Exclusive interview with Keith Emerson. I met Keith at the end of November last year (and yes, I did have a very nice time!) and the result is a very long, interesting and entertaining interview which can only be read in "Impressions"! And as if that isn't enough, for the second issue (due out in the summer) we've got Carl Palmer lined up for a World Exclusive interview! We are planning to release THREE issues of "Impressions" this year. The magazine will be printed in colour, by the same printing company who printed our ELP Convention Programmes (i.e. very good quality)!). For administrative purposes, we are asking fans to pay for three isues in one go. Price is L12 in the UK and L15 Rest of the World for three issues. These prices include postage and packing. Payment is to be made by cash (registered post), cheque, postal order or International Money Order (drawn on a UK bank) to: "Impressions", 28 Stonebanks, Manor Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey KT12 2QE, ENGLAND. I look forward to hearing from you all - you really don't want to miss this one! Liv. G. Whetmore Editor ------------------------------ To: arnold@iii.net From: geoff@goostrey.u-net.com (G R Goostrey) Subject: King Buscuit Double Release Date: Sat, 24 Feb 1996 18:31:01 -0000 John, Thanks for a great news service. 1) I'm relatively new to Digest and am still working through all the back issues. However, I must thank Liv. G. Whetmore c/o Bjorn Are Davidsen, for reminding me about Compact Disc Services in Dundee. I have been trying to get hold of the re-released Christmas Album, associated CD single, and the I believe... CD single. On reading her note of June '94 she reminded me to try CD Services with much success. Thank you. I am now eagerly awaiting these items. I should repeat their address and telephone number (which has changed) Compact Disc Services Magnum House 140 Seagate Dundee DD1 2HF Scotland. Tel. 01382-776595 CD Services also inform me that they have heard that a King Buscuit Flower Hour Double CD of ELP is due out soon. They have placed their requests for copies but as yet do not have a release date. Finally they are hoping to go onto the 'Net soon, and while they will not advertise all CDs etc. they are keen ELP fans themselves. They are hoping to be able to mail 'Net users with new releases, but I think this will be a while away. They were however happy to record my E-mail address in preperation for their system. 2) Does anyone know if a CD version of the Retrorock Radio show is available? This was broadcast on 31st August 1981 I guess in the USA. I have a vinyl version but am loath to play it in case of deteriation. This recording particularly impresses me because it includes a superb version of Tarkus and was also recorded during the '77 tour without the orchestra. Perhaps If I list the tracks someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Intro Fanfare Hoedown Tarkus C'est La Vie Tiger In A Spotlight Lucky Man Pake A Pebble Piano Concerto No.1 (part 1 - If I remember correctly) Watching Over You Nutrocker 3) Where is the best place to obtain the complete ELP discography off the Web? This must be a FAQ. I have seen various places to try but I haven't had much success (in my limited experience). I would like to compare a comprehensive list against my own so that I know what else I need to collect! [ Editor's Note: I'm planning on putting a discography of official releases on the Web at some point. And, Bjorn-Are has sent me a Word version of his "Time and A Place" list that is very extensive. I'll try to get that up on he web soon, too. - John - ] 4) This may be old news but, British Telecom recently (last year some time) issued picture 'Phone cards with pictures by Roger Dean, incluing the Asia first album cover and the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe first album cover. The other two I do not recognise, but I am not totally upto speed with Yes or other artists using his artwork. Once again I would like to congradulate you on such a superb news service - keep it going. Why does it seem such a hassle to be able to obtain them. Who is responsible for their promotions anyhow? Here in Australia little seems known of this great band and of its contributions to the musical idiom of 'progressive rock'. Promotions of any other band would be undertaken with a vengeance but ELP nope! Why is this so? Do they not like Australia or Australians for that matter? I would personally sell my soul to see these guys 'downunder'.Maybe Will Alexander knows the reason for this. I have slowly been replacing my older material on vinyl and cassette with the recordings of the bands material, past and present in the CD format. But all along the way it has to be ordered with the exception of ItHS which I found early this year. I am now looking forward to five CD's that I have ordered from the states, one of which is the latest Christmas album. Thank you for your time. E.L.P. for Australia........... Even if the album was a "Greatest hits" (with the usual stuff, I imagine) its really nice to see an ELP ad in a mainstream rock magazine again! Re: Errors in the "Rock and Revolt" article Thanks for kindly pointing out some errors. They will be amended in the next edittion (which incidentially will be the third as a somewhat revised version already has been printed in the Scandinavian ELP Newsletter). Re: Triumvirat and Mastermind Thanks also for constructive replies to my T&M bashing. As mentioned in an earlier posting later relistenings to T&M has made me change my mind somewhat, especially on Mastermind! However, I truly believe that ELP fans ought to get all albuns by T&M as they both contain high quality music (M more original than T), and certainly get one (at least me) to start thinking! Re: ELP and the future I really hope E, L & P (combined and/or individually) really will get back to want to make music more than money! However, in order for that to happen I guess E & L will need to get their finances back in order by fans and others buying their next solo outings and reremastered (or whatever Rhino palns to do) CD's. Regarding the various planets in the YES newsletter NFTE #145, I've also wondered what would have happened on a Yes planet, and (as is my habit) particularly with ELP. In the Yesiverse Keith and Greg leaves ELP in 1980 to be replaced by Trevor Rabin and Janis Ian (the latter as she was the only rock singer who could match Greg's vocals). They then make the rather uncharacteristic album RIPoff, before Palmer leaves (to be replaced by Colin Powell) and Lake returns. The new ELP then put out 92701 with the hit single "Owner of a Honey Farm". Never to avoid a quarrel the boys separate again, this time making the official ELP centered around Robin and Palmer. Then the different group Lake, Emerson and Powell (with no legal rights to the ELP name) makes the album LEP and backs it on stage with Gary Moore. After a successfull tour everyone get together on the album Union, before Emerson leaves again. In this period several boxes, live sets and videos are issued, such as ELPast and ELPieces, containing obscure leftovers from the early 70's and new live versions of "Lucky Man", "Tarkus" and "Rondo". The latest ELP album so far is "Walk" by Rabin, Lake, O'List and Powell, based more on a heavy metal emphazise than prog. However, rumours say that Rabin and O'List now have left the group and Emerson finally has returned after having put out 23 CD's with various new age pastiches and historical muzical romances. Regarding Genesis and Pink Floyd in the Yesiverse, I guess everyone may guess by themselves. On Yes planet Genesis has an interesting and intricate mixture of people on and off, while Pink Floyd with a rejuvenated Barret is a sensation - at least before the CD. The 10-hour special spent three-plus hours on black music but completely neglected the celtic -->folk --> bluegrass --> country --> western swing axis that so informed rock in the fifties and sixties. Not to mention the strong influences of European classical music, from Dowland to Charles Ives, that heavily influenced '60s prog and psychedelic groups. In "ELP Digest volume 5 issue 25: GX-1,Tarkus", there was a little confusion of GX-1 and GS-1. GX-1 is a fully analog synthesizer. In 1973, Yamaha made GX-707 polyphonic analog synth ( called 'Electone GX-707' ), the trial product of GX-1. In 1975, GX-1 was made as a commercial product. And in 1977, Yamaha sold CS-80 whitch has the same circuits that GX-1 has as ICs. I want to add John Paul Jones to the other keyboardist who bought GX-1. Keith bought the second GX-1 from him. GS-1 is the first keyboard using FM synthesis. It looks like piano (using wood panel I mean) and has ready-made tones. The tone programmer for GS-1 is a white large machine and has two displays. I think this the "white refrigerator". GS-1 users had to ask technicians to edit tones because the programmer was not for sale. Excuse me for writing in odd English.
