ELP Tour ELP / Tull Tour..... ELP/Tull in San Diego Prelude ======= Thanks to everyone who has sent me mail and helped me update the latest tour list. Rather than repeating it here, I will point all readers to the latest version that is posted on the ELP web site (http://bliss.berkeley.edu/elp). That's the place that gets updated first when I hear of a new or changed date/venue/etc. for the tour. I'd also like to thank all of the people who have sent me questions about whether ELP will play in any other places that the US, Canada, and Japan. As I've said in my replies (and I'll repeat here in case I didn't get to reply to a message you may have sent me), I only know about the dates/places that are listed on the web site. The ELP Digest is a fan newsletter with no official connection to ELP. However, ELP's managers do read the newsletter and I'm sure they welcome the words of encouragement for people who would like to see a tour of South America, Europe, Australia, , etc. We'll keep hoping that the planned tour is successful enough that all of the fans get to see ELP sometime soon but, other than keep the interest alive via the ELP Digest, there's not much more I can do. There's a lot of stuff in this issue. I've tried to cluster a lot of the mail I got about tour dates, etc. at the end. So, read through it to see if there is any news about a planned appearance near you. They have a series of 6 "Voice Crystal" cards and number 3 is the "Emerson Sound Card". It has just come to my attention that the original version of the "Emerson Sound Card" was a RAM card with only 32 of the 64 available sounds programmed. At some point they expanded it into a ROM card with all 64 sounds programmed. Those of you with the original card can mail the card in to be ungraded with all 64 sounds for a very small nominal fee (to cover shipping) of $4. The current cost of ROM cards is $79.95 for one and $300.00 for the entire set of six. I also just found out that card number 5 and number 6 from this set also have some Emerson sound patches on them. Interested individuals can contact: Eye & I Productions 1250 Kay Lane Oakley CA 94561 tel (510)625-7888 fax (510)625-7999 web http://www.voicecrystal.com In related news... Will Alexander has moved the Akai S1000 format Emerson sound samples and program patch setups CD-ROM to the Ensoniq ASR sampler format. This is now released and should be at your local Ensoniq dealer. Will says: "Go check it out! It really sounds great and has sequenced versions of 1st Impression Pt.2 and Eruption/Stones of Years". The original Akai S1000 format CD-ROM does not have these sequences. There is also a possibility that in the future the CD-ROM might be ported over to Roland and/or Emulator formats. Also, at some point there might be an "Emerson" sound card for the Alesis Quadrasynth too. Does anyone know of any other Emerson-related factory or third party sound cards, sound disks, patches, demos, etc... for any current or previous synthesizers? I was thinking of compiling a master reference list for the benefit of all of the ELP fan musicians out there. There's a commercial I've been seeing lately for a classical compilation CD called "Classical Thunder". It apparently brings together pieces which invoke a sense of being very powerful, for example the 1812 Overture. What makes this (marginally) ELP-related is the fact that it seems to me that the person who chose the selections to be included is an ELP fan. Some of the included are 2 pieces from Pictures at an Exhibition - "The Great Gate at Kiev" and "The Hut on Fowl's Legs" (which I think is the same as "The Hut of Baba Yaga") - "Fanfare for the Common Man", the Janacek piece which "Knife-Edge" is based on, and the Prokofiev piece that "Romeo and Juliet" is based on (BTW, that's another piece for the Prokofiev thread which hadn't been mentioned as of V6 #10 of the Digest). Anybody else seen this? 2. Last night (May 9), I was watching hockey (Penguins vs. Rangers) and noticed that at one lull in the action, the arena organist was playing an excerpt from Tarkus! I didn't see much of the game, so I don't know what else may have been played, but I thought that was pretty cool. I think they were in New York, so I'll have to play more attention at the Rangers home games from now on. Hope this wasn't too exciting for anyone. And that in a year they didn't put out any new album ,however RC's portrayal of them in issue 192 may have helped. This year ELP are marked as one of the highest climbers since last year, going from 115th to 84th position. Their touring partners Jethro Tull went from 13th to 6th position, which implies honorable mention and a photo, and also other prog shows climbed, showing that this is a music to be noticed, at least among dusty record collectors :-) Gentle Giant (anyone not familiar with them should really give them ten tries per album) went from last year's position 94 to 67. YES ended at 35, moving from 45th. Should this tendency keep up (I'm a firm believer in mathematical tangents, when suited) the prog'ers will push Beatles, Queen, Oasis, Pink Floyd, Stones, Neil Young, Elvis, Bowie, Dylan, Hendrix and such out in the dark in about five years. Of course depending on whether y o u send a vote to Record Collector next February on ELP and the rest of the best (which means you keep the Beatles). The albums that I know of are: Storia di un Minuto Per un Amico Photos of Ghosts* L'Isola di Nuente The World Became the World* Cook* (also titled Live in U.S.A.*) Chocolate Kings* Jet Lag* Come ti va in Riva Alla Performance Suonare Suonare Passpartu Apologies for any glaring errors in my Italian! Those marked * have lyrics in English. Photos & World are mainly remakes of earlier Italian albums with new lyrics (by Peter Sinfield). By Jet Lag they'd become rather jazzy, & I believe the later albums (I've not heard them all) show a variety of styles...Performance is a live album which is a reasonable introduction to the later work, although those of us with a predilection for classic progressive rock tend to stick with the ones up to Cook (& maybe Chocolate Kings, which has its moments). Popular opinion seems to favour the Italian albums, but as someone who rates Pete Sinfield's lyrics very highly, Photos of Ghosts has the edge for me (it also has a much tighter version of Celebration, although I like the Italian E Festa, too). There is also a bootleg cd Bobo Club '72 which, although of fairly dodgy sound quality, shows the band at their best...I have also seen a double cd which is basically the same set, but with a couple of extra track (damn! I wish I'd bought it!). There's also at least one best of (I believe there is also a double). I never did know how the E.L.P. connection came about (anyone?), but being on their label, with Sinfield writing lyrics seems to show a close connection. Also, I remember when I first saw them (1973...my first gig!), their drum kit was ex-E.L.P., & had the logo on one of the gongs (& the guy did helluva drum solo). There are also numerous solo albums that former members have made, although the few I've heard have been rather disappointing. All the P.F.M. stuff is available on cd, & in Britain is available through GFT (best mail order prog dealer I've found) - Unit 2, 87A Maple Road, Surbiton, Surrey, KT6 4AW. I have found some info on the Web in the past...it was in the "miscellaneous" link from the Progressive Rock web page. Hope that helps. By the way - just to get a BIT of E.L.P. into this post, the "Message to Love" double album of the 1970 Isle of Wight festival has a blinding verion of Rondo...now where's the rest of the set? (The ones with no date are not in chronological order, unless I`ve been lucky enough). >They were signed to Manticore and sound quite similar to ELP. It seems >too much like coincidence that such similar groups were on the same >label at the same time. Yes, a nice coincidence, don`t you think? In fact there is another Italian band called BANCO which were also signed to MANTICORE and which also sounded similar to ELP (It is said that even Keith himself played on one or two of their shows (can anybody confirm this?)). If you want data about BANCO`s discography, tell me and I`ll post it (It is more accurate than the one of PFM, I promise) I don`t know if this has been said before, so sorry in advance if it has, but I have read in the ASIA WWW page that Carl has been involved in a band called K-2 (in 1995) with John Wetton and a Yugoslavian guitarist. is this true? Any news about what are ELP doing at this moment? Are they preparing a new album? Well, I think that`s all I wanted to tell you, hope the info will help, Simon. Bye! DANIEL ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 07:58:49 -0500 (EST) From: David Carswell To: ELP Digest Subject: RE - PFM background PFM (or Premiata Forneria Marconi) were an Italian act with a couple of albums (entirely in Italian) under their belts when signed to EL&P's Manticore label. The first Manticore album was called PHOTOS OF GHOSTS and featured english lyrics by Pete Sinfield and the band's signature tune "Celebration". The next album (in my opinion their best and one of the best Prog albums of all time) was called THE WORLD BECAME THE WORLD.The third Manticore outing was a live disk recorded in Central Park and at Convocation Hall, Toronto, titled COOK. As Manticore began to crumble PFM released an album which was a Manticore/Asylum Co-release called CHOCOLATE KINGS featuring a new lead vacalist (Bernardo Lanzetti, who sounded like a raspy Peter Gabriel) and a new English lyricist. The final PFM album (that I know of) was called JET LAG and reminded me of Gentle Giant's CIVILIAN album, a strange attempt at Progressive Commercialism. I will post the band members at a later date, but in general the group featured guitar, bass, drums, keys and a violin/woodwind player (individual members changed but the format remained the same). Some of the early Italian material was released in North America on a poor quality pressing called THE GREAT MARCONI BAKERY. If you like PFM check out another Italian Prog band from the same time period called BANCO. I cannot see what the problem would be in playing a few concerts at the Royal Albert Hall again for their European fans, after the Japanese leg of the tour - after all, they will have a full set rehearsed!! Note, however, that the Japan dates are ELP only, so ELP will be the "headliner" in Japan. - John - ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 May 1996 18:24:12 +0200 From: Karmelo Fern\andez Ga\q\an To: arnold@dartmouth.banyan.com Subject: ELP / Tull Tour..... I have just learnt about the 1996 Tour. I have been in touch with this home page for the last 2O days. I am from Spain and have received the news of the tour with expectation. It seems they will not be touring in Europe, so many people from the old continent will probably go to the States to see ELP live. Please keep us up to date about the tour. How to get tickets from Europe etc. ------------------------------ From: "Paul D.
