First, we hear that Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull has needed some surgery and had to cancel the remainder of their spring tour. It is hoped that he will be recovered in time for the summer Tull/ELP tour to be unaffected but we won't know for sure until after he's a little further along in his recuperation. Then, we hear the news that Kevin Gilbert (who has worked with Keith Emerson on the Changing States album) has died. We wish Ian a speedy recovery and pass our sympathies along to Kevin's friends and family. Till next time, - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 May 96 13:32:54 -0400 To: Subject: Peter Banks looking for keyboard player From: Otherroad@aol.com, on 4/16/96 1:50 PM: Guitarist Peter Banks (Yes/Flash/solo) is currently conducting a talent search to find a keyboardist to collaborate with. I have a sneaking suspicion that there just might be one or two keyboardists that subscribe to ELP Digest. Peter's message is below. If any of you wish to inquire, please send a note my way. Thanks, Gary MESSAGE FROM PETER: Fully house trained keyboard player with versatility and adaptability is sought to collaborate on a forthcoming album project. You should be well versed in most musical styles and idioms and the ability to swing is as important as technical prowess. Also, players should be willing to receive and give criticism, spontaneously compose and play in unusual circumstances, to question most things and most importantly work with a guitar player in unconventional surroundings. Experience and enthusiasm will be most appreciated. If you live in the London area or can be there in the near future (or are willing to commute!) and have no hang-ups about musical styles or size of musical equipment, please contact my friend, Gary Davis, at OtherRoad@aol.com. Tell a little about yourself - experiences, influences (hopefully varied, please, no clones), shoe size, favorite pizza topping, etc. And not wanting to exclude any budding genius who isn't in or can't make it to London, transcontinental collaboration is possible depending on what recording equipment you have at your disposal. Give details. Gary will tell you where to send your tape/CD/resume/bribe/etc. Looking forward to 'hearing' you, Peter Banks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 96 10:10:14 EDT Subject: ELP reference in Action Comics? From this it looks like the Tull tour may be delayed or cancelled. Do you know if ELP would consider going it alone? After all, even though I like JT, the reason that I'm going is to see ELP for the first time since the Works tour!!. Mark [ Forwardings deleted ] A STATEMENT FROM IAN ANDERSON: Following an accident in Lima, Peru in the middle of March when I tore a ligament, I had surgery in England on my return from the rest of that tour in which I performed a concert in a wheelchair. After the surgery I was advised by the doctors that I would be fit to perform the tour in Australia and New Zealand once again, however in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, after the second concert in Australia some complications were discovered and I was admitted urgently to a Sydney hospital suffering from a serious thrombosis condition. Currently, doctors are working to stabilise this problem and will decide in due course when it is safe for me to make the return trip to the UK. I have been advised that a subsequent period of three months will have to elapse before I may consider any further travel. I deeply regret the need to cancel our tous of New Zealand and Australia as well as the many European concerts due to take place in June and July. Beyond that, our concerts must remain unconfirmed until this potentially serious condition has been made stable. They are going see if Ian Anderson recovers sufficiently in the next weeks before they make any descision that would jeapordize the tour dates. As I get more info on the tour status, I will keep you all appraised of the situation withg (hopefully) accurate information. The news stems from the usenet progressive rock newsgroup, and its verified through the Gentle Giant mailing list "On Reflection". Cause of death has not been announced. At the moment there are enquieries going on as to whether there's anything one could do for his family (send a card or something) or if its possible with e.g. charitable contributions in Kevin's name. Those who would like to know more about Kevin may listen to his excellent prog/pop album from last year: "Thud". He also contributed an original piece titled "Suit Canon - Fugue of the A&R Staff" to the Gentle Giant Tribute project (see http://www-ccsl.cs.umass.edu/~barrett/GG/project.html). Also recommended is his version of "Back In N.Y.C" which is perhaps the best piece on the Genesis tribute album "Supper's Ready". To: arnold@dartmouth.banyan.com Hi, USA Today, Tuesday, May 28, 1996 ...Kevin Gilbert, who shared a Grammy nomination with Sheryl Crow for All I Wanna Do, was found dead of unknown causes May 18 at his Pasadena, Calif., home. He was 29. Is this the same Kevin Gilbert that worked with Keith? Keith mentions him in the "Nightwatch" program he did with Mike Kelley a year or more ago. Called him "disgustingly talented" and made some joke about a "Japanese Lap Harp". Did Kevin play the tuba on "Abbadon's Bolero" on Keith's solo album, "Changing States"? I don't have the album with me at work or I could check on it. I thought Kevin was older, and also has a Genesis tribute band, who appeared at Progfest '95, I think. Karen E. Here's what they had to say... * Rhino is going to re-issue 12 ELP albums on May 28. * One of Charles's wife's favorite song is "I Believe in Father Christmas" Greg says, funny enough, that song was recorded in the summer. * The band has a bond like a family so it's not really like they had disbanded and are now re-forming. It's more like just getting together again after a period of working on different things. * It's always good to see the ELP fans because they're so dedicated. * Mitch Mitchell came to talk to Greg and Keith when they were discussing starting a new band. Keith and Carl had met with Mitch Mitchell and Jimi Hendrix in a club in London but, before they had gone too far in the discussions, Jimi had died. And, concurrently, they had discussed the new band with Carl Palmer. Their work with Carl jelled and the rest was history. * Greg told the story of writing "Daddy" after seeing Sarah Wood's story told on TV. And how, after the song was written, he wanted to do more with it than just releasing it on an album and is glad that it helped people be able to talk about the problem of child exploitation and abduction. It's hard to talk about but by bringing the issue out into open discussion then it was worth doing. Thinks that song has raised $20,000-30,000 so far for the Sarah Wood foundation. * For the last 3 months, Greg's been living in Paris and writing songs for a forthcoming solo album that he's hoping will be released next year. * Q: What's the most bizarre story of an ELP "backstage demand" during its heydey. A: Apart from symphony orchstras, we weren't that demanding. * Q: Any hope of playing some new music during the tour even though there won't be a new album for the tour. A: I hope so, but the important thing is seeing the fans and playing the music they want to hear. I think I got it down right. - John - ------------------------------ From: parsenau@BayNetworks.com (Paul Arsenault) To: arnold@dartmouth.banyan.com Subject: Greg Lake interview Date: 16 May 1996 14:21:35 GMT Hi all ELP fans, I was listening to the radio here in Boston WZLX 100.7 on Thursday morning May 16th. To my surprise Greg Lake was a guest in the studio. The visit only lasted about ten minutes. He talked about the upcoming tour with Jethro Tull. He said this is the first time playing with JT. He also talked about Rhino records releasing all of the ELP catalog re-mastered on May 28Th. Also that Brain Salad Surgery would be in a special package. He talked about the song "Daddy". How he was watching americas most wanted and was inspired to write it. He talked about promoting it at radio stations and getting phone calls from mothers crying over the song. One of the DJ's told him that it was Robert Fripps birthday and he was fifty. Greg wished him a happy birthday and they joked about sending him flowers. Greg has spent the spring writing in Paris for a new solo cd that he hopes will be released next year. He talked about the concert tour. He said thay would be playing all classic material. They have not been working on any new material as a group but hopes to play somthing from the solo album that he is working on. They talked about how he wrote I belive in Father Christmas in the middle of the summer, then they played it (in the middle of spring). That was the end of the interview, much to short for me. I can't wait to see the show in August. "ABANDONS' BOLERO" (part 1) It is really disappointing to learn that ELP are not coming here to Europe. Keith always claims the European influence in ELP's music, but it seems that he forgets his origins and we poor Europeans (like in 1977 and 1986 ) are completely abandoned. Have ELP forgotten that it was the people from Europe who organized the 25th anniversary ELP CONVENTION in Birmingham?
