According to the Chryalis Records UK web site (http://filament.illumin.co.uk/chrysalis/uktull.html), the Jethro Tull dates for 1996 have been cancelled. This seems to indicate that the US Tull/ELP tour may be cancelled, too. I'll send along more information as the word becomes more official from the ELP camp. (Also, the ELP Japan dates were ELP only, so my assumption is that those are still on but I'll watch for official verification of that, too.) To be precise: here's what that web page says in the context of the Tull dates for November: "JETHRO TULL - UK Tour Dates CANCELLED 1996 Tour schedule disrupted by complications to Ian Anderson's leg injury. More news soon." Thanks for Joe and Steve P. for being the first to bring this to my attention. 2. When I moved my office, computers, etc. to my employer's new site, a few things happened. First, we changed our domain name from "banyan.com" to "coordinate.com" to reflect that we are Coordinate.com: the Internet Division of Banyan Systems Inc. So, please update any mail nicknames, aliases, etc. you have for me to point to: arnold@dartmouth.coordinate.com Unfortunately, I also deleted a few days worth of my incoming mail when I upgraded the version of Solaris on my Unix machine. So, if you sent me any mail for the ELP Digest, subscription updates, etc. and haven't gotten an answer from me, please re-send to the above address. Now that we're settled in our new offices, the ELP Digest should be back to its normal operation now. Thanks for your patience over the past few weeks. Let's hope the US Tull/ELP tour happens at some point! - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jun 96 13:01:11 EDT To: From: B. P. Subject: Items of Interest Hi, #1. People Magazine this week (6/8/96 edition) features a 2 page "Then and Now" article on ELP.Great photo of KE jumping off (or on?) his motorcycle. This guy does not look 50+ years of age. Also, glad to see ELP NOT featured in the obits section (Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix, Garcia..etc)!! Nice to the see the excerise performed during the 70's (running, swimming, etc) has paid off for these guys (Even GL looks a bit trimmer than in '92/93.) #2. If you had to pick one entertainer (actor, musician, etc) who looks like Keith Emerson, who would this be? My vote: Ted Danson (with the wig) #3 If Tull is unable to tour, will ELP continue with the American leg? IF EL and P are considering a set, please consider playing "On My Way Home" from Three. No offense to Robert Berry, but I believe Greg can do a superb job with this arrangement. Have a great day!! B. I have been an avid fan for 24 yrs, but thought there were few of us left. As my fisrt entry to the Digest, I wanted to relate an interesting note regarding ELP covers. I have an LP of the band EKSEPTION (Rick van der Linden - same keyboardist for the band TRACE) that has a cover of the Nice's FOR EXAMPLE (on the NICE album). I believe the name of the album is EKSEPTION 5. There are very good notes on the backside of the album that talk about the song and the Nice's influence on the band. For what its worth ..... Tarkus is about the Tarkus - an armor-plated armadillo that goes throught the various battles victorious until he meets the Manticore which defeats him and he retreats. 2 simple accounts, I know, but I always like simple lyrics. Is it true that the Yamaha GX-1 was debuted (at least in the west) by Keith Emerson, possibly in one of those live shows during the WORKS era? 2. Is it true also that the keyboard cost 50,000 quids when it first came out? 3. Keyboard enthusiasts say that the closest modern digital keyboard that could emulate the Moog Synthesizer is the Nord Lead Virtual Analog from one of the Scandinavian countries. What closely emulates the Yamaha GX-1? 4. If I'm not mistaken, in a past issue of Sound (or was it Keyboard?) Keith mentioned that his GX-1 was *given* , rather than sold by, John Paul Jones. 5. And lastly, as if those questions were not stupid enough, WHICH ELP SONGS, if somebody may point out to me, contain the Yamaha GX-1 sounds? I was wondering if anyone knew how to get a hold of the > concert from 2-9-78 at the Nassau Coliseum (NY) that was broadcast on the > now defunct radio station WLIR? Thank you. This was an excellent concert. WLIR did a good job of making a fairly good recording, most likely right off the sound board. In my mind, this concert contained the best Fanfare for the Common Man jamming, and I also particularly liked some of the stuff Keith threw in during Tarkus. I had already seen them twice on that tour (5th row in Madison Square Garden with the orchestra, July 1977, then again in Madison Square Garden for the WNEW concert in October 1977), so I skipped the Nassau Coliseum concert, thinking it wouldn't be much different from the WNEW concert. Boy, was I ever wrong. After hearing the recording, I really regretted not being there (especially considering that they broke up not much after that). My biggest regret is that I didn't make a great recording of it. I recorded it on a not so great Sharp cassette deck, and my receiver didn't have a very good antenna. Plus, I had some interference for a short while which partly ruined one song (I believe Pirates, but my memory fails me, and my cassette deck is currently out of service). I was just getting ready to re-master my failing cassettes to CD recordable. If anyone out there has what they believe to be a higher quality recording, I'll make a free CD for you if you lend me your tape. I will be using very high quality equipment for making the transfer (much better than is necessary in this case). I will be using a high end Nakamichi cassette deck, connected to a Symetrix 620 20 bit A/D converter (with dithering) into a digital input card to my PC (and its CD recorder). Again, this is way overkill considering the not so great quality of the original recording, but at least the copy will be just as good as the original. I just want to preserve what I have before it degrades any further (and I haven't listened to it in over 2 years, since my cassette deck has been out of commission that long!). So, what do you think happened to WLIR's original tape? I would love to get ahold of that! I am glad to keep receiving ELP Digest, that proves you haven't frozen in the cold there. I'm almost melting away in the hot weather here! :-))) Yes! Greg dos have a tattoo in his forearm. It's an ugly snake. I saw it when I met him at the swimming pool at Sheraton Hotel here in Rio. I can't remember if it's on his right or left forearm, though. But that's very easy to check! You just have to watch ELP's video Welcome Back and one of the old scenes shows the three of them backstage many years ago. They have no shirts on and you can see the tattoo on Gregs arm. That's it! Personally I think we have much more to offer than Triumvirat and would also like to mention that Mastermind is currently alive and well as opposed to long gone... In regards to the ELP comparisons we have drawn, our first album "Mastermind Volume One" may be the most ELP influenced disc being our first effort. I'm pleased to say Volume One will be re-released internationally in April 1996 by Cyclops/GFT in Europe and Dutch East India in North America for those who may be interested. The original release has been out of print for quite some time. However, we have grown considerably since the beginning and last year's release Mastermind III "Tragic Symphony" has much more to offer than just imitation. I am pleased Bjo/rn says it started him thinking. ELP was a launching point for us as we strive for the next step - if only E, L and P would do the same... certainly they have nothing to prove, but do they still have something to offer? I believe Mastermind does. To learn more about Mastermind visit our web page. It has been recently updated and contains a wealth of information about the band, audio clips from each of our 3 albums, a WinHelp Biography for download, photos from recent shows, and sources for Mastermind discs (which admittedly are sometimes hard to find). The URL is: http://www.mosquito.com/~bberends/mastermind/ As much as I have enjoyed ELP over the last 25 years, how many times can one listen to the same albums over and over? How many versions of 'Pictures' do we need? It's time for something new. It's an official release (I think a European release, but it may be out in the U.S.) I came across it the other day in a record store (it caught me off guard!). Anyhoo, it lists ELP as performing Pictures, Rondo, and possibly one more track (can't remember). I was wondering what length these tracks are and what the performances and sound quality are like. I'd be surprised if this contained a full 30-40 minutes of ELP considering all the other bands on it, but if it did I'd have to run out and get it! As it stands now I'm guessing maybe they took some liberty and edited stuff for length, so I'm a bit leery about buying it. (I want it mainly for the ELP, although I definitely wouldn't mind having the Hendrix, Who, and Doors stuff). Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this. So as I`ve got now the chance to convert NTSC to PAL (as I live in Germany), I`m looking out for old video records of ELP - up to this time I`ve the nice "Pictures at an Exhibition"-thing and the video from the last tour. [...] The second (and second-a-half) thing is that there might have been a set of Emerson sounds for the Roland D50 Synthesizer - anyone knows??? Last: Does anyone has sounds from the famous GX1??? As I have to spend my money to other things I can`t look out for one to buy (even as I`m trying to get one of here "little" daughters, a Yamaha FX1, EX 42 or EX1), I want to set up a set of sampling disks from the GX1 and don`t know, if Mr. E. (who might have to do other things as letting people sample his instruments) had done this before and made it available for public use. So far this time, let us all hope that there will be any kind of ELP-tour this or next year. Greetings from Germany, K.
