Sorry for the delay in this Digest. And sorry for the many people whose submissions haven't been included. Since the tour has started, I've been getting about 10-15 ELP messages per day and it's been hard for me to keep up. Since there is some news to report on, this is a "NEWS" edition. The next edition will concentrate on the many reviews I've received from fans who attended the shows in Europe. I can understand their feelings and I have contact with some UK fans to provide data on the broadcast of the Munich show. I must also say on the other side, it is not only the UK that has been omitted from tours in the past. We German fans had to wait also for 18 years between 1974 and 1992 to see ELP live again. The annouced 77 tour with orchestra was canncelled, no ELPowell tour, no 96 tour either or something else. It's just this 1997 tour that the UK fans don't get their fair share. On the other hand there are unconfirmed rumours about additional concerts in Europe after the US tour, and ELP stated already that there upcoming new album will see its live premier in the UK. Even though I think all the UK fans should keep on pushing ELP to show up soon in their home country, I think the current situation is not that bad for them as some fans assess it. with a deep understanding for your heartburns in the UK Bernd Prott ------------------------------ From: Mr A T Ginman To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: ELP in the UK Date: 7/28/97 11:16 AM Subject: Isle Of Wight movie--what crap To: elp-digest@reluctant.com (ELP Mail List) Date: 7/27/97 12:26 PM I saw the movie at a small theater here in Philadelphia last week and I am pissed. The ELP performance was hacked to pieces...literally! They should sue to have it removed. All the other bands got to do at least one full song, in some cases two or three. And, who really cares about Taste or Leonard Cohen? But, ELP's section could not have been two minutes long, maybe only one. And that little bit consisted of 10-15 second pieces of "Pictures" and "Rondo" strung together in no meaningful way. It was pitiful! It was an abortion! The other performance sections were also done badly. It's obvious that the director was not good at dealing with musical performance. But, the other groups' songs were performed in full. The director must have HATED ELP. On the other hand, the non-musical parts of the movie were actually quite good. My guess is that they hired a director who was experienced in documentary film making, but not in music performance. -- Mathias iconoclast@tarkus.ocis.temple.edu ------------------------------ Date: 7/25/97 6:31 PM From: Uwe Hoepfner Subject: Broadcast ELP Concert 24th June 97 Munich To: ELP Digest Hello ELP-Fans, a short comment right after the broadcast of the show. DISAPPOINTING! Not ELP, they were great, but only LUCKY MAN and the encore were shown plus the silly interview. Those fools at the tv station cut out most of CPs solo, so you miss the best part. I'm not satisfied with the sound quality. The bass is clear, the drums lack the bass part, the keyboards are to much in the background. I still believe, that there is something missing, but i'm not sure anymore. Good for archive and memory. Any comments by the professionals about KEs play? Right before i saw the PICTURES video, which i got today (at last). Its interesting to compare with now 26 yars between the records. To make a short comment: They got serious, but they are still funny guys. KE does not fool around on the ol` moog so much, but still has nice ideas. GLs voice is still (or again) in good shape, but cannot be compared with that young boy voice he had more than 20 years ago (and should not be compared). But his interpretation of LUCKY MAN is the best live performance I (!) ever heard of this. Hey, and Rainer and me are there, too. When you see KE doing his work on his back with the organ on top, the camera shows the audience, the guys right behind KE nearest to him, thats us. I´m the one with that foolish grin on his face, up in seventh heaven. Still excited after all these days. With regards from "Unter den Linden..." Date: 7/21/97 9:54 AM Yesterday I heard an interview with Keith Emerson on Boston's classic rock station, WZLX. During the interview, Emerson mentioned that ELP did not have the same success with popular music as did some of their contemporaries (Yes & Genesis were the ones he mentioned). He announced that ELP was going to go into the studio right after this tour and record and album of new music in the old ELP style. He also said that they might be ready to play some of it live by September. Looks like I'd better get my Harborlights tickets now! Scott Gold ------------------------------ Date: 7/19/97 11:46 AM From: Uwe Hoepfner Subject: ELP on german TV Sa July 19 1997 To: ELP Digest Hey (especially german) fans, H E L P Someone get me a ladder, or better videotape !!!!! Today, July 19th the TV-station 3SAT (a partnership of german, austrian, switzerland tv stations) broadcasted a footage of the TOLLWOOD-festival in Munich. As part of this festival appeared ELP on June, 24th (remember please my view of this concert in one of the last elp-digests, think 13 or 14). At 12.50 I zapped through some channels, when I suddenly saw Greg Lake performing LUCKY MAN. I rushed to the VCR and taped from that point. Then there was an interview and the encore of that show. The encore was shortened, Carl Palmers drum solo was cut out (good grief!) and i think, some of the Emerson parts were missing. Has anybody taped the whole thing?. If so, please send me an e-mail for further contact, i like to have the whole thing. This broadcast was from 12.30 to 13.15. BTW, the Bayerischer Rundfunk will broadcast on Friday, 25th July excerpts from the same festival at 23.15 (german time) for one hour (Bernd Protter said that before). The other date he mentioned (August 19 th) seems to be possible, because the tv station broadcasts live perfomances on every tuesday evening, or maybe nearly every. Here is what they said in the interview part I saw:(please remember, its translated from german to english, i'm not sure that i got everything right, my comments in brackets) Question: What did you do in time when you wre not on tour Greg Lake: We did many recordings and spent much time on songwriting (seems that the work is in progress, this doesn't fit with the infos Will Alexander gave me in Dresden). After the tour we'll release a new album, therefor we do much songwriting. Question: Why did you decide to tour again? Carl Palmer: We really like to tour (if one saw them live, one can see that this seems to be true, there is much fun on stage), we are touring every year, we toured last year, this year and maybe next year (gotcha, we'll nail 'm on this), especially in Germany (some sugar for the audience), we love it, we love Munich (smiling and laughter all three, more sugar and honey). Question: You like the beer? Carl Palmer: I never had beer all my live, but i like the food, its really good. Question: You're famous for working with classic music themes. Will you use such elements on your new CD? Keith Emerson: Ehhhhh... ehem..... We allways integrated elements from different sources (and didn´t mentioned it, okay, okay, those were the days), not only classical, but out of other music, too. End of interview Comment on the interview: Not much information in it, just confirming the release of a new album, GL seemed to be talkative, CP humorous, KE looked as if he was dragged to that interview (imho). Comment in the tv footage: It was the show, were we complained about that f****** cameraman in front of us. On tv you could see that. But on the other hand, they did a very good job. There are not only hands to see, but often all three of them, very clear picture, no gimmicks, allways in the centre of action (and therefore in the way sometimes). The sound is clear, but i missed something, as if they didn't record all sounds KE produced. One can also see a talk KE has with Will Alexander, but as i remember, that wasn't in the encore but in the beginning of the show. A question to the professionals (Rainer: hint, hint!): I still think, KE did a quite good perfomance, and this tv broadcast proves that? If you saw it, please comment and give some details, what, in your opinion, went wrong. I hope that someone gets me the whole broadcast and that we get another one from the BR. And this is the end of more work for you, Mr. Arnold, keep up the good work. with regards from "Unter den Linden..." Again the BBC recordings version is better than that on the original album. I never knew what the end of the "Won't you take a walk with..." sentence was, until I had help from the BBC record and the National Trust. Re the first, I heard something that sounded like "Jesmond" - and I knew someone who used to live there, an area in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I recently went on a tour of Northumberland, and visited one of their country houses, called Cragside. In the guide book, it mentioned that the family associated with this house had previously had connexions with somewhere called "Jesmond Dene". So that's it! Surely the thing about the Nice was its "tightness", i.e. three musicians responding musically to each other's playing style, rather than vocal quality. -- Peter Wilton The Gregorian Association Web Page: http://www.beaufort.demon.co.uk/chant.htm ------------------------------ Date: 7/15/97 10:01 AM To: "Smith, Jim M."
