It's really sparked some interesting ideas. With any luck, ELP will see the ideas that are being discussed and factor this fan input into the decisions made about the summer set list. TO JOHN, and ELP fans worldwide, I am sorry to hear of COZY'S passing. he provided some great drumming during the E,L,&POWELL tour of 1986! We have heard that ELP are working on new material. I would like to use STEVE HALL'S (FROM LAST DIGEST) sugestion concerning what ELP should play on the upcoming "shed" tour. I would like to hear some new music, even in an incomplete state. ELP will probably have the same amount of time to play as when they played with TULL 2 years ago, so to cover it all will be tough! I would concentrate on the new piece, the BARBARIAN, BITCHES CRYSTAL, TOUCH AND GO (FOR COZY), FROM THE BEGINING; The guys should continue doing a combined TARKUS/PICTURES simply because of the time constraint. KNIFE EDGE and one of the KARN-EVIL segments would do it. No LUCKY MAN, NO HAMMOND bashing, no drum solo. I know they have been doing solos for years, but on this tour, are they REALLY necessary? I got a good look at the HAMMOND last tour, and there are braces on the sides of it now, to hold it together! I always liked the 'SHTICK," but I would prefer the music by the band--that is what we really go to see! CHARLIE NOLAN YESmanONradio@msn.com ------------------------------ From: "Andrew C. Keeping in mind that it'll be a short set since they are a supporting band. I think it's time they revamped the set list. While the last couple of tours have sounds fantastic I'd like to see some changes.. Aside from hoping for new material if they have completed work on an album.. I'd like to see (believe it or not) some of the ITHS material, I think Daddy would sound really powerful (Esp since GL has found his voice again). Play Father X-mas..Even if it is Summer, Keep Hoedown Lucky Man Play a more drawn out Maple Leaf Rag and Barrelhouse Shake-Down Let CP play LA Nights. I think this would be a fast and loose set, one that I;d not only love to hear but I think the band would have fun playing..and give each of them the spotlight for a portion of the show. ELP has to also be tired of the same material night after night Just my thoughts Nat ------------------------------ From: Prott Bernd 2933 , on 4/7/98 2:44 PM: To: John Arnold ,Steve.Hall@barclays.co.uk Subject: Response to Steve Hall's "What do ELP fans want to see on tour" Hello John, hello Steve, even though it's once again the US which see another ELP tour, I would like to give my wish list for a most wanted ELP tour in Europe. 1. ELP has to be the headline act, even though I like Deep Purple at lot , I prefer ELP alone on tour through Germany even without opening act like in 1992 . 2. I personnaly can live without any form of stage antiques like the Hammond wrestling or ribbon controller butt rubbing. This was fun in the early days today I think it's about time to stop it. I'm afraid Keith will make a fool of himself in the view of many people if he sticks to long with this stuff. I totally respect him as a gifted musician and composer, that's my reason to come to see the show, not his physical ability to throw around a Hammond organ. 3. The show should last a minimum of 2 hours plus encore(s) 4. I would like to hear: - of course, all the new conceptual material that has been talked about. I would enjoy it, if 50% of the show is based on new pieces. - more jazz flavour like in some pieces of the 97 tour , e.g. like the jazz improvisation as part of 'Take a Pebble'. For me the highlights of 97 were Take a Pebble and Bitches Cristal, do it again folks - 'Abbadon's Bolero' instead of Hoedown maybe as a starter into the show - 'Trilogy' - 'The Babarian' instead of Knife Edge, which should give Keith a superb oportunity for a piano solo to include excerpts from his piano concerto (which partly has a certain Bartokish touch) and more mindblowing brushwork of Carl - A piano solo based on the 'Inferno' main theme, which I personnally regard as the K. Emerson's best and most matured piano work so far. - no MIDI overdubs to the piano sound like in 92 / 97. It killed the sound for e.g. Creole Dance in total - a revitalized version of 'Tarkus' with Greg Lake selectively playing 6 string guitar and not longer than in 97 - a revitalized version of 'Pictures' based on the studio version from the Hot Seat album, including Greg's acoustic guitar section. - As an encore 'Fanfare to the common man' like in 1997 to include the wrestling free version of 'Rondo' like in 97 up to the drum solo, skip the rest including the reversly played Bach Toccata - Keith playing more arpeggios than glissandos in his piano solos, Com'on Keith you can do better than in 97 just practise, practise , practise like every pianist even in your league has to do. I also do my piano basics for 30 minutes every day before I tackle a piece. Sometimes during the 97 shows I attended, I got the impression that Keith is lacking confidence in himself. In Rome after a sensationally virtuous performance of Creole Dance he simply exploded of confidence after he had astouned himself by his own performance. So Keith you are absolutely able and prepared to help yourself out of this state. - a new solo synth for Keith, I felt the good old Moog could no longer compete with its digital competitors, its sound was weak, many sound samples from the Moog sounded much better when played with the other keyboards e.g. the Lucky Man solo. Keith, have you ever put your hands on a WALDORF Wave (I mean the big one) synth. It will give you a Minimoog Look and Feel which is the perfect foundation for synth solos, but with todays sound generation and realtime (knob based) manipulations features. In total this is a extensive wish list and I'm sure ( like Christmas) I cannot expect all wishes to become true but I really hope to see ELP in Europe (including UK) soon with a good share of new and revitalized classic pieces. Honky Tonk Train Blues Tiger in the Spotlight Creole Dance (but see below) Keep: Hoedown Bitches Crystal (please!) Take a Pebble Tarkus/Pictures as is - I think they kept the best of both! The Score (from ELPowell) A true piano IMPROVISATION from Keith, which could be something different every night. He could just play off the top of his head. I would LOVE to hear "Close to Home" from Black Moon. Changing States Something NEW - hopefully something that harkens back to the classic days, something they're planning for the new album, something that would make us all pant & salivate for the new album. This is my first posting to the Digest. Before I get into it, I want to compliment John on the terrific job he has done over the years. Whenever I check my E-mail, I really enjoy seeing an ELP Digest nestled amongst the copious amounts of spam. Now, to my point. I am writing in defense of what has come to be known as 'Hammond Wrestling' or 'Organ Wrestling' (although the latter term evokes images of recent U.S. Presidential scandals, so I prefer the former). It seems as though a number of people have lately been bashing the time honored ELP tradition of Hammond Wrestling. For whatever it's worth, I cast my vote in favor of Hammond Wrestling. I have many thoughts on this subject, some quite esoteric and/or philosophical, so for the sake of brevity, suffice it to say that I believe that the vast majority of the audience members, as well as the immortal Emo himself, truly gets a kick out of the taming of the Hammond. After all, wasn't ELP one of the original pioneers of the concept of combining phenomenal muscial talent, dazzling original compositions (and arrangements), and a truly dynamic stage show, the latter being for entertainment purposes??? Can't the boys have a little fun while they're amazing us with their virtuosity? I know that I eagerly look forward to a good Hammond Thrashing at every show; indeed, if they omitted this element of the show, I would be terribly disappointed. On those occasions when I have brought an ELP newcomer to a concert, their mouth is usually hanging open by the end of the show and the after show comments generally revolve around how fantastic the band is and what a great show they put on. Considering that most bands (even some obscenely famous ones) simply strut, pose, and posture during their concerts (expecting their hairdoos and zany outfits to mesmerize the audience), I find ELP's stage performance to be a never ending source of refreshment in an otherwise bland music world. So, if anyone from the ELP camp happens to read this, please be aware that there are fans out there who truly enjoy the nightly torture of 30 year old electric organs. I consider it to be an integral part of a well rounded musical/entertainment experience. By the way, I saw them at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles in late September '97; absolutely the best show that I have ever seen them put on. The boys were tight and clean, Greg's voice sounded the best it ever has since ELPowell, and Carl (contrary to some criticisms I have read in here lately) put on a brilliant drum solo that included some tricks and techniques that I had never seen him do before. If Keith wants a steadier sound source, how about using one or more of the 'new analog' keyboards out there (Korg, Roland, Yamaha). What I would like to see dropped for the next decade or so: - PICTURES & KNIFEEDGE--I've seen ELP over a dozen times in 3 decades and every show seemed to feature these two pieces. I love them both dearly but enough is enough! I don't know about the rest of you, but the same goes for the Hammond wrestling and feedback show-'been there done that' more times than I care to remember. As much as I love the old ELP classics it is high time that they started to vary their concert repetoire. Greg has plenty of lovely ballards - Affairs of the Heart etc - without having to trot out Lucky Man and Still every tour. Some of the best music Keith and Greg made in years is to be found on the Emerson, Lake & Powell ((RIP) album but they have only played Touch & Go from that. What about an ELPalmer version of Learning to Fly and The Miracle? I thought Farewell To Arms was an ELP classic but they dropped it from their live shows. Why? It is brilliant. Hopefully the new album will be strongly represented on the new tour but old standards like Pictures and Tarkus should be laid to rest. Still, all I want is for them to play the UK again. They seem to forget that we are also a part of Europe when they played their 'European' tour last year!
