No, you won't be getting them daily. After getting yesterday's Digest, a number of readers sent along more news of ELP dates. And, I got some subtle reminders that readers had started a thread about what they'd like to see at ELP shows late last year after last summer's tour. Those messages were stuck in the backlog. But I've rescued them for this issue and would like to acknowledge these unsung pioneers for starting a great topic before I even noticed it! So, I decided to send out another. And knock off some more of the backlog while I'm at it. I received the following information from a variety of ELP Digest readers who have asked me to pass it along. (1) www.sfconcerts.com reports that Keith Emerson will be appearing at Palookaville in Santa Cruz, CA on May 14! More details are probably available from the venue: Palookaville, 1133 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 408.454.0600 (2) The latest rumors for Deep Purple/ELP/Dream Theater dates seem to be for the USA only. (Though another reader has heard rumblings about a possible show in Bonn. Here's what I've been able to piece together (unofficially so far): July 10 - Bonn, Germany (???) For the following tour dates, ELP is an opening act for Deep Purple's Summer 1998 USA tour August 6, Holmdel, NJ August 7, Meadows Music Theater, Hartford, CT August 8, Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, Mansfield, MA August 9, Jones Beach Ampitheater, Wantagh, NY August 11, Philadelphia, PA, USA August 12, Washington D.C. As this reader who was happy with the selection told me, "I'm a happy camper... -- they're also are a good source of other ELP group and solo material." Just thought you'd be interested in this information. - John - ------------------------------ From: "x x" , on 4/27/98 9:33 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: tour list... Adriano hit it right on the head! I couldn't disagree with his selections at all. I hope the guys take this to heart and heed some of our tour requests. It is heartening to read other peoples comments that actually thought the ELPowell version of the band had its merits. I love that CD! My wife started following the boys after seeing Cozy; she was heart broken at the news. Anyway, my suggestions would be lose "Pictures" for a tour or two, do KE9 (the WHOLE thing!), more ELPowell stuff, and I'd really like to hear what Keith would do with Beethovens 9th, *second* movement (Ode to Joy has been over done--it'd be too obvious to do) Mike L. ------------------------------ From: gendev@juno.com (GLEN C DENIS), on 4/27/98 11:18 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: these are a few of my favourite things! If I could have three wishes: Firstly: that ELP would tour down under!!! I know, I know, ain't nobody buying their stuff in Australia... or are they? In my 18 years of fanship, I've discovered a surprising amount of people who not only know of them, but also have their entire catalogue! Prog rock may not be flavour of the month in Oz, but ELP fans are a discerning lot who measure their loyalty in decades. I have discovered the same phenomenon with Frank Zappa fans - and the common denominator in both these cases is, of course, exciting, original, enduring music played by awesomely talented and dedicated musicians (and may I put GL on a pedestal and remind everyone that he is still one of rock's finest bass players? Anyone got a favourite GL bass moment?). Secondly: If I should ever get to see them live, my priority-one inclusions for the set list would be - - Endless Enigma I & II (complete, with Fugue in between as per TRILOGY) - Jerusalem - The Score + Learning to Fly (with segue as per the album) Also, any piano solo would be a treat - sans MIDI layering. And thirdly: Anyone close to home know where I can get the boys on film? Anything on VHS PAL/NTSC video would be great! I'm at paulvds@ozemail.com.au if anyone can advise me. All are welcome to correspond about ELP, MIDI stuff, guitars, good food....whatever! I know, because I have a very bad quality video of the programme. BTW, I like the idea Greg mentioned in his interview in the latest Impressions magazine of playing things that they'd never played before, "just out of determination to do something totally different". I would agree that Carl has used the same schtick a few too many times. I would like to see the drum solo continue. However, how about more "real" percussion like timpani, chimes, maybe even some mallet percussion. The tambourin thing is definately getting old. How about trading measured solos with Keith or Greg on guitar like an improvised jam of some sort where they each take turns. Also, we definately need to hear some NEW material. Personally, I like the "epic" type pieces like Tarkus. But I would like to hear new stuff. Thanks, Bill Sjoquist [ Editor's Note: In this vein, I'd love to see the return of "Toccatta". I think this would fit the "short format" of an opening act set list. And it would surely get the attention of the Deep Purple fans at the shows. How nice to hear someone departing from the usual KE9 and Tarkus are the "great" pieces (along with the Pictures arrangement), and there is no music after 1977! The harmonic writing in the miracle is better IMO than either of the two more well known pieces. >I thought Farewell To Arms was an ELP classic but they dropped it >from their live shows. Why? It is brilliant. It's a good song - it had already gone before they got to the Albert Hall in '92, hadn't it? As Bolero built up to a climax the music suddenly ended and the boys immediately burst into Hoedown. A great start to a great concert. Happy days! I am not in favour of the move into melodies and was disappointed not to get the full Monty of Tarkus at the RAH - or indeed KE9. The version of Tarkus on WBMF is truly wonderful and the piece builds to a wonderful climax - cutting it off for Knife Edge was a bit of a damp squib for me. Genesis went down the same path and it was really annoying to have them cut from a great song into another. Would Mozart and Beethoven have treated their material so? Still - what a great band! I surely hope ELP intend to take a page from the Moodies tour book and do the local orchestra thing. It seems that all I hear about local symphonies is that they are scraping by and require gov't subsities to stay afloat, mostly due to due to lack of interest. If the people concerned about keeping their symphonies intact would understand that the solution is obvious! That's probably why the Moody Blues concerts worked. They are a goldmine for reveue. I've seen the Moody Blues 4 times with the Utah Symphony and the Salt Lake Philharmonic and all these shows sold out and were breath-taking. It would be the perfect forum for ELP and both parties should jump at the chance! Speaking of perfect forums, another idea wold be an ELP unplugged concert (MTV?) My fantasy song list would read something like: From The Beginning Take a Pebble Lucky Man Maple Leaf Rag C'set La Vie Tarkus (a stretch I know) Lend Your Love To Me Tonight Piano Concerto No. 1 Footprints in the Snow Karn Evil 9 Second Impression Don't get me wrong. There is nothing better than feeling Fanfare for the Common Man rattling off my molars. Just a thought. Looking forward to the future with eyes full of tincel and fire ... Lake/Sinfield 1970 ------------------------------ From: Mike Branick , on 1/27/98 6:03 AM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Word Sculptures - Some Comments Just a few brief comments on the First Edition of Greg Lake's Word Sculptures - Highly recommended for any ELP fan and especially fans of Greg. The introduction is quite brief though, and while Greg's comments are interesting, they probably will disappoint those who seek his wisdom and the "true" meaning behind the lyrics he wrote. In a nutshell, he gives none, relegating the meanings of the words to the interpretation of the individual who hears or reads them. There's some prominent stuff missing, maybe because it was the stuff written by Fraser or Sinfield. "Pictures..." is represented only by "The Sage" - no lyrics for "Promenade," "The Curse of Baba Yaga" or "The Great Gates of Kiev." One omission I consider significant is one whole verse from Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression - the one that begins, "Right before your eyes we pull laughter from the skies..." There may be a few other glitches. Oh well, some fodder to consider for the second edition... There are a few seeming inconsistencies, like "There behind the glass IS (not "lies") a real blade of grass..." but I'll trust that the lyrics in the book are the ones originally written by Greg, that for whatever reason were modified slightly in the final recordings. Yes, it's "...new clear dawn" and not "...nuclear dawn" as some seem to think (KE9, 3rd impr.; I think it was the same way in the original lyrics provided with the album). And the mystery of the Knife Edge lyrics is resolved, and .... Oh, just order the book, it's worth it! Where were you all hiding??? The show consisted of about 6 pieces by Marc Bonilla & his group in the first half, followed by 2-3 pieces by each of the guest musicians, Keith coming on at last. Marc Bonilla told the audience how he and Keith met and Keith offered to play piano on Marc's "White Noise", which they went on to play. They then played "Hoedown" and "Tarkus". Just before Keith launched into "Tarkus", Will Alexander handed him a plate - the sort you see in souvenir shops all over - that said "California Tarkus", which he stuck at the side of his Goff/Hammond. At the end of the show everyone came onstage and all jammed together. The whole evening was a very happy & friendly one, everyone onstage (such a collection of great musicians!) seemed to be having fun playing, and the audience had a good time throughout the show. Akiko Hada akiko@bln.de ------------------------------ From: "Mark Clairmont" , on 1/29/98 11:49 PM: To: Subject: Problems reading CD rom portion of King Biscuit CD I have noticed that several people have been having problems reading a CD. A solution to this problem may or may not have been provided, but I will attempt to provide a possible solution. I am about 3 digest issues behind right now. I am not familiar with the CD itself but I am familiar with problems reading a CD that contains multiple sessions on it. Typically program CDs are created as single session since the entire data set is orginized and written during one pass, in one format and then closed. I do this myself with my equipment. At a later date, If I still have space available on the CD, I sometimes fill it with another data set and hence, I now have another session. Same format, but there is a void (20 MBytes or so) on the disk and a new directory table that points to all of the data on the disk. I have no problems now reading such disks because, I obtained an updated driver for my adapter (SCSI in my case) that recognizes multiple sessions. I have a commercial multi-session CD (Babylon 5 sound track with AVI, JPG, WAV and other assorted computer files. Since there is more than one format on the disk, my adapter/CD Rom driver must be able to distinguish between the computer data (one type of format) and audio (another type). In summary, update your CD Rom driver and/or adapter driver. You can do this be determining the manufacture of the components and accessing there tech site on the internet. If you are using IDE/EIDE, then it could be your operating system. On Win95 systems, click the SYSTEM icon in the control panel. If the Op Sys version number is 4.00.950B, then that is not the problem. Concentrate on the CDROM driver. If you have the updated driver, then your CD ROM drive probably doesn't support multi-session. Older cheaper ones don't ( > 4 years ). I hope this helps. ------------------------------ From: Otherroad@aol.com, on 2/3/98 1:21 AM: To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Church Hello ELP fans: Some of you may be interested to know that I've just received word from my import distributor of the availability of the following title: EMERSON,KEITH & GOBLIN-CHURCH + 1 This is another Emerson soundtrack for the Italian horror movie director, Dario Argento.
