Then and Now Album Art ELP Tribute More on the ELP Tribute album Announcing NEARfest '99!!! ELP Tribute band: Trilogy (in LA) Prelude ======= I'm back! I was originally thinking that a lot of people wouldn't be that interested in what other fans had to say about the departure of Greg Lake from the band so I've been dragging my heels on trying to gather up the many, many e-mail messages people had sent me related to it. Well, boy was I wrong! I've gotten a lot of e-mail from people saying that they are interested and asking for it. So, after I get this Digest out (which has a lot of good stuff in it, by the way), I think I'm going to build a web page on the ELP Digest site with all the "disbanding-related" e-mails I can find. I'll put it up on the site and send out a Digest with the URL. (Then, I'll send out the text to those who respond telling me they absolutely can't access it via the web. I hope that's not many of you.) I'll do it this way because I'd like to release them all at once and I know a lot of people have mail programs that don't respond too well when the Digest gets to a certain size. So, I hope that's a good way to get all those feelings, emotions, ideas, etc. out at once. Thanks for your patience. And thanks to all of you who have made the move over to the new web site at http://www.brain-salad.com. I have changed the "old" site at bliss.berkeley.edu/elp to redirect visitors to the new site. But I've put a timer there to give anyone who wants time to jump into the old if they want to look up something there. (But I do ask that you let me know if there's something on the old site that isn't on the new site since I think I've moved everything over to its new home.) Three choices: - VHS with subtitles; NTSC standard; US$16.99 - VHS dubbed; NTSC standard; US$16.99 - DVD; Region 1 encoding (US & Canada); US$20.96 All of the REAL anime aficionados will choose subtitles. :-) Here's a chance to see an early work (1983) by Katsuhiro Otomo, director of Akirs -- AND to hear an important piece of the Emerson canon between his "Nighthawks" and "ELPowell" periods, with something for everyone (the BSS crowd will love "Challenge of the Psionics Fighters;" atonal-types will prefer "Joe and Michiko," etc.). The "Harmagedon" CD, under the name "Genma Taisen," is still available from German Music Express at www.musicexpress.com, as are these Emerson titles: "Changing States," "Inferno," and "The Christmas Album." Amazon.com has "The Church" and "Murderock." Honestly, I've never seen so much Emerson product available at one time -- take advantage of it while it lasts! :-) "Harmagedon" plot synopsis, for those who are interested: >From the depths of darkest space, two objects approach the planet Earth. The first, a mysterious asteroid, collides with the airplane of PRINCESS LUNA, who has been touched by an ominous premonition. In a flash, Luna is hurled into a pure psychic plane where she learns the truth behind her visions. The second approaching object is GENMA, an eternal, malevolent being who has already destroyed half the universe -- and Earth is now in his path! Her full mental abilities now awakened, Luna must form a defense against this irresistible force ... a task billions have tried and failed to accomplish before her. One by one, Luna finds her champions across the globe. First, however, they must come to grips with their new abilities. Like Luna, the fledgling Earth warriors develop deadly psychic powers ... and some are more capable of dealing with them than others. There to focus them all is VEGA, most powerful cyborg defender of a world lost centuries earlier to Genma. But as Earth starts to crumble, and Genma's advance agents go on the attack, it may be too late for anyone to turn the tide! HARMAGEDON, or THE GREAT BATTLE WITH GENMA, is a stunning release from one of Japan's most popular contemporary filmmakers, Haruki Kadokawa. With character design by Katsuhiro Otomo, director of Akirs, HARMAGEDON teams many of Japan's most talented animation and comics veterans together for spectacular results that have already made this film a cult classic! 132 Minutes. Animated action adventure. Unrated. Suitable for most audiences. Parental discretion advised. ------------------------------ From: "Jed Schorr" , on 2/25/99 12:37 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Letterman When Dave came out for his monologue about 3 weeks ago, the first thing he says is: "You know, today is the 10th anniversary of the day Emerson, Lake and Palmer announced their breakup at a press conference. John, I just wanted to take this opportunity to post my second-ever message to the Digest. In the wake of the unfortunate news about our heroes breaking up, I just wanted to share my joy/sadness at having had the incredible good fortune to attend what may have been their last concert ever in San Diego, CA, in late August 98. I had never had the opportunity to see an 'end of the tour' show; it was truly spectacular. Emo was absolutely on fire !! It was obvious to all that he was charged up and having the time of his life that night. Carl delivered the goods (as always), but it was pretty hot and stuffy in the hall where they played and, being a former percussionist myself, I can assure you that these conditions are NOT conducive to delivering an earth shattering performance. Greg was obviously tired and hot. He came through with a fine performance (as always) and his voice sounded the best it has since ELPowell but you could tell that he was not at the ' top of his game' that night. I won't rehash the set list; I'm sure the ELP fans already know it. However, I would like to relate one extremely funny moment that, in retrospect, was a portent of things to come. When Keith brought out the Moog ribbon to do his pyrotechnics, he did something that I had never seen him do before. After rubbing the ribbon on his own sitting apparatus, he walked directly towards Greg and made motions as though he was going to rub the ribbon on Greg's hindquarters !! The look of surprise and genuine shock on Greg's face was something that I would pay $100 to have on video; it was truly priceless !!! After about 1.2 seconds of pure terror, Greg indicated to Keith that there was no way that Emo was going to rub that damned ribbon on his precious derrier !!! It was obvious that this was a truly spontaneous and unrehearsed moment and of all the ELP visuals that I have been fortunate enough to have seen in my life, this is the one that I will treasure forever ! Long live ELP !! Especially in light of recent developments... Nevertheless, lets not dwell too long on that. This traditional rounding up of an ELP year is instead a time for joy - and wishes! We've been rather spoiled the last few years and 1998 was no exception. Hopefully forthcoming news (may already have come forth when this review is in the Digest) from the "ELP corporation" - combined with projects already in the pipeline will make 1999 the best year yet! I hope - and believe - that the result of Greg leaving ELP will be MORE music - not less! And best of all it may reduce ambitions towards number one hits and raving radio reviews... May even put more emphasis on composing music than producing songs. Looking back on last year, 1998 really had its thrills and shocks! CD's, videoes, tour, solo projects, tributes, press releases, you name it. The supersonic fighting cocks still seem to remain at the hatchery, however a new year always brings new possibilities... Among the highlights the jury this year has made the following nominees: Category 1: ELP related CD's of 1998 1: "Then and Now" - Cal jam' 74 and Rome 97 and from the 98-show. Lots of interesting stuff, some great alternative "Take a Pebble" piano playing from 74 and interesting - though a bit slow (or more "majestic"?) playing from 97 & 98. And lots of other live pieces than on the "Royal Albert Hall". Best of all: Keith piano solo is not another Creole Dance.... Though, disappointingly, 21st Centrury Man is cut too abruptly off. 2: "Live in Poland" - (though recorded in 1997) this is a gem! The best recorded live performances by ELP the last six years. Even Creole Dance is a marvel. Despite the troubles with his right hand, Keith really makes his three other arms do the job. Astonishing playing (or am I - as a non keyboard player - too easily impressed by such show offings?)! Unfortunately ELP (for some peculiar reason) are not getting royalties from this one - a "Poland only" release. Hopefully things may be amended? 3: "The Official Greg Lake Bootleg"! A great collection of rarities and finally some live ELPowell stuff! Wonderful! 4: Works 3's ELP tribute! ELP has been covered in various contexts earlier, however, finally there's a whole CD! And there are more coming! 5: "Fanfare for the Pirates", a 3CD tribute! 6: Keith's "Inferno" with a great 10 minute outtake! The jury had a hard job this time - a real close race. After long deliberations a painfull decision had to be made. And the winner is (fah - fah - fah - faaah!): "The Official Greg Lake Bootleg" Category 2: ELP related videos/TV-shows of 1998 1: "Manticore Special", 1973 Great to have this one officially at last! Though it seems not to have gone through any kind of "digital remastering", neither of the sound nor the picture? 2: "Works Orchestral Tour - Olympic Stadium, Montreal 1977". Another great one to get official! Though not remastered - the sound not too good in places?! And the winner is (fah - fah - fah - faaah!): "Montreal 1977" Category 3: ELP related books of 1998 1: "Listening to the Future - The Time of Progressive Rock, 1968-1978 " by Bill Martin (released 1997 in some countries). Though minor flaws like rather incomprehensible, highly opiniated and way over the neomarxist top, this book is worth having for its review of each of the years "best buys" from 68-78 - and ELP gets a good hearing! 2: "The Billboard Guide to Progressive Music ", by Bradley Smith. A peculiar book managing to omit diamonds like Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf - and not looking much more into ELP than the Lyceum 1970 video... A raving review of that one, though! 3: "The Progressive Rock Files", by Jerry Lucky - a great overview of the genre and ELP gets well deserved praise! What it lacks in depth it regain in breadth. Not a difficult job! Though far from the level of Macan's marvellous "Rocking the Classics" (from 1996) - the winner of 1998 is "The Progressive Rock Files"! Category 4: ELP related home pages just exploded this year! And the winner is the ELP Web Ring (22 entries as of today, and the official web sites are not on the ring)! Category 5: ELP related magazines of 1998 1: "Impressions" (a great ELP fanzine filled with interviews and reviews) - in its third year an impresssive achievement, Liv! Info on how to order it (a must for any ELP fan!) is on the ELP Digest page! 2 "Fanzine for the Common Man" (a nice fan/band-and-related- history/index black and white fanzine) still going strong, thanks David! Info on how to order it (also a must for any ELP fan!) is on the ELP Digest page And the winner is "Impressions"! The interview with Pete Sinfield in issue 6 was simply priceless (and not "praiseless" as I cluelessly wrote before a bell began to ring...) 1998 Honorably Mentions : * Tour of North America! And in the pipeline for 1999 there seems to be a lot of jewels: * Another 2 tribute projects! Which other band has had 4 tributes (it may even be more...) released (one of them a 3CD) in less than a year? Shows that ELP at the moment is hotter than ever (perhaps except for sales?)! * Several solo CD's may be under way - Keith's solo albums (and more film scores?) - Greg's solo albums (rereleases and a new) - Carl retrosprective (with his Percussion Concerto!)? - Keith retrospective (with unreleased material?)? * Tour with orchestra and (or?) dancers? - on my wishing list... * An ELP (corporation) "concept" album (and cover by Giger)!! - on my wishing list... * Keith autobiography (if not in the present Milennium, perhaps in the next...) * Symphonic ELP (though Keith has removed the sample "Tarkestra" from his homepage) * Another release of BBC's the Nice material! Remastered. Looking at all the releases in 98 and possibilities for 99 (though ELP sans Greg is an interesting challenge) make the end of the 20th Century a good time to be an ELP fan! And even if not all may come to pass, at least 3 things should be MUSTS in 99 (coincidentally excactly the same I put as musts for 98...)! 1: A new concept album (with even more weight on good, creative, overwhelming and "unexpected" music, than on any "concept")! 2: Symphonic ELP!! 3: Keith's autobiography!!! With those 3 items in place, the new tour (come to think of it, Pavarotti's first name begins with an L, he even fits Greg's stage cloths) may of course be allowed to wait to August for its start, as long as it also touches UK and Scandinavia! Perhaps there even may be a chance of Keith going to the studio and recording a CD with 74 minutes or so of piano soloing? Should not take him much more than an hour. We're still awaiting final confirmation from the City of Bethlehem, but we expect that to be a formality so here goes: Announcing the inaugural North East Art Rock Festival (NEARFest) June 26 & 27, 1999, Moravian Arts Pavillion, Bethlehem PA organizers: Dr. Robert LaDuca (rlladuca@leo.kings.edu) Chad Hutchinson (qghost@fast.net) Due to the increasing size of the progressive/art rock fan base in the Northeastern USA, we have decided to begin a progressive rock festival tradition in this part of the nation. Bethlehem is centrally located, within relatively easy driving distance of New England (4-5 hours), New York metro area (1.5-2 hours), Philadelphia (45 mins), Baltimore (2.5 hours), Washington (3.5 hours) etc. Even the aberrantly large concentration of Quebecois prog fans would be able to drive down (~9 hours). The Moravian Arts Pavilion is a large tree-surrounded field on the Colonial-architectured campus of Moravian College in historic downtown Bethlehem, close to the Lehigh River. There is a permanent concrete bandshell at one end, with sound baffles and ample power supply, as well as private backstage room for bands and crew. Many restaurants, pizzerias, delis, and bars are within easy walking distance (5-10 minutes), in downtown Bethlehem, though we will have food and beverages on site. There is ample free public parking nearby. We are presently soliciting sponsorships from both music and non-music sources. One local bank has already committed to become a sponsor! Potential sponsors are invited to contact us to help put this festival together. We are in negotiations with many bands to fill the roster of the inaugural NEARFest: Alaska, Finneus Gauge, Oracular, Mastermind, The Hand Farm, Anekdoten, IQ, Somnambulist, California Guitar Trio, Fish, Bondage Fruit, Eloy, Minimum Vital, Puddlejumpers, Spock's Beard, and others both established and up-and-coming. We want to emphasize that no contracts have been signed yet, so no band's participation should be considered definite at this time...in fact , we're still waiting for final confirmation from the city. But we can no longer wait to get the wheels turning so to speak. Bands should feel free to contact us regarding interest in playing at NEARFest '99. To raise funds for NEARFest '99, we will be posting autographed CDs and memorabilia for auction on rec.music.progressive, the NEARFest web site (to be launched shortly), and via email lists. Some artists who have already donated items for auction are: Par Lindh Project, Kevin Moore/ChromaKey, Anekdoten, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer, IQ, Marillion, Fish, Dream Theater, etc. Please let Chad or I know if you'd like to be placed on the auctions mailing list. Also, drop a line if we've piqued your interest and you'd consider attending, so we can get an idea of attendance from "net people". Hope you see you all next June at the first NEARFest!
