Firstly....... Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Band Scores ISBN4-401-34886-9 This has the full band score (Keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, vocals) for the following tracks: Eruption Blues Variation Promenade From the Beginning The Sheriff Karn Evil 9 - 1st Impression part 2 The book does not list who has transcribed these....but whoever it was has done a great job. The "Blues Variation" looks spot on to me. The second book is King Crimson - again a full band score ISBN4-401-34619-X Tracks are: 21st Century Schizoid Man I talk to the wind Epitaph/March for no reason/Tomorrow & Tomorrow The court of the Crimson King/Return of the fire witch/ dance of the puppets All the scores are written in concert pitch, including the sax parts. Which is a bit annoying if you happen to be a sax player! But....nevertheless... a very good job. The cost. I bought mine from Chris at "Lost-Horizons" in Japan and they cost Yen 2500 each. I haven't had my credit card statement yet so I don't know how much that translates to in "real money". Our intention is to publish the first edition of RONDO this summer with a promised interview with Lee Jackson. As we are unsure of the number of potential takers for the magazine we would be grateful if your readers could register an interest by writing to the e-mail or postal address below. This would not be a commitment to buy! It would just give us a indication of how many people are potentially interested. We are particularly keen to hear from people who actually saw The Nice who could write their recollections for possible inclusion into the magazine. We would also be keen to have input from anyone that was involved with The Nice.....road crew, production staff, management, journalists, publicists etc... If you know any fans of The Nice that are not on the Internet, please could you pass this message on to them and ask them to write to us at the address below. SAVE IMPRESSIONS! The recent ELP split at the end of last year came as a great shock to all their fans. But for Impressions, it was even more tragic because of the bad timing. We were about to renew subscriptions for Issues 7 and 8. Greg Lake's announcement, followed by Keith Emerson's and Carl Palmer's, came at thebeginning of December. We sent Issue 6 of Impressions out later on that month, with a letter bringing the sad news and a form asking our subscribers to renew your subscriptions. Not a good combination, we realise, but thiswas after all completely out of our control. As a result, less than half of our original subscribers have so far renewed their subscriptions. Due to the sheer cost of producing this high quality magazine, we need many more subscribers for the finances to add up. So the sad reality is that, unless we can get some more support, Impressions will not live to see another issue. This would be very tragic for many people, who depend on Impressions for ELP news and stories. It would be tragic for Keith, Greg and Carl and their management and it would be tragic for myself and for the staff of the magazine. The consequences would be felt by many. BUT FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION! Oh no! I believe passionately in what we do with Impressions and we have so much to write about, despite the recent split. We would therefore like to keep this magazine going for a long time. So if you are one of those people who keep saying to yourself "Oh, I must subscribe to Impressions one of these days", PLEASE do it NOW! Because, if you don't support us now, we may not be here "one of these days"! That is the truth and that is the reality. I've had some people say to me "ELP are not together anymore, so I'm not going to support them or Impressions anymore". If that's what they feel, that's what they feel. But my answer to that is this: "Elvis Presley has been dead for nearly 23 years, does that mean that people don't write about him anymore?!?!? I don't think so!" We would like to continue bringing you a high quality and informative magazine about these three great musicians. Keith, Greg and Carl have all said that they would like to continue supporting Impressions and we will bring you fresh interviews and news as we get them. For Issue 7, we have three exclusive interviews lined up -- Keith Emerson, Dr. Bob Moog and Al Goff. This will be a fantastic issue! Do you really want to miss it? Please help us to save Impressions by subscribing. All it costs is L12 in the UK and L14 (appx. $24) in the Rest of the World for Issues 7 and 8. We accept all major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA and American Express), to make it easier for people to pay (subject to 5% commission). Back Issues are also available, details about these can be found on our web page: www.interx.net/~jgreen/impressions.html. We have scans of all the covers up there, we have excerpts from interviews, photos and lots of other information. PLEASE TAKE A LOOK! You can either E-Mail me your payment (our bank says it is safe) or send it to: Impressions, P.O. Box 516, Addlestone, Surrey KT15 1YA, England (and please note that in the event that Impressions does fold, all money for Issues 7 and 8 will be refunded.) Greetings: The Summer of 1999 will see the release of my book on the history of Asia, "The Heat Goes On". While the book will obviously center on the band's turbulent past, there will also be a considerable amount of time spent on Carl Palmer's personal history both before and during his tenure in ELP. There will also be quotes from an exclusive interview with Greg Lake regarding his time in Asia in 1983, and his work with Geoff Downes. Details from Greg's quotes include the following: ** How he came to play on the "Asia in Asia" tour of Japan. ** His impressions of the shows and the circumstances surrounding the tour. ** Why he left shortly thereafter. ** The "Ride The Tiger" project with Geoff Downes. My name is Ed Macan. Many of your subscribers will know me as the author of "Rocking the Classics: English Progressive Rock and the Counterculture," and some may also know me as the leader of the Hermetic Science prog rock trio. Besides working very hard on finishing the the second Hermetic Science CD, which we hope to release later this year, I am also currently working on a musical biography of ELP. Readers of "Rocking the Classics" will recall that I spent a good deal of time analyzing the critical reception of progressive rock. This is an issue I will certainly be revisiting in regards to ELP. With this in mind, I am attempting to locate as many copies of ELP album reviews from the 70s as I can. I am especially interested in finding copies of reviews from the early 70s by well-known critics who were either pro-ELP (Chris Welch) or anti-ELP (Christgau, Marsh, Bangs, Rockwell, etc., etc.). While I have a number of interviews, there are a couple I have been trying to locate, and would be thrilled if anyone could send me a copy of. I can be contacted by snail mail: Ed Macan c/o Hermetic Science World Headquarters P.O. I receive some information from "Chasing The Dragon" ( J.Wetton's web site). (http://www.geocities.com/Paris/8099/wetton.html) [ Editor's Note: I went to the John Wetton site and couldn't find this information currently. But this was sent to me a while ago so it may have been on the site at one time. Can anyone confirm any of this information for sure? Thanks! - John - ] It's very interesting for all of us: JOHN WETTON'S NEW SOLO ALBUM IN THE WORKS John is busy in the studio working on his next upcoming solo project titled, "No Man's Land" which is being recorded in a studio 'deep in the woods'. More details to come. RAISED IN CAPTIVITY - THE BOXSET Also, look out for John's upcoming Box Set titled "Raised in Captivity". This will be a retrospective of John's career including "Caught In The Crossfire", possibly "Jack-Knife" and other material. ASIA RUMOUR RESPONSE In response to rumours of an ASIA reunion, John has stated he is hopeful this will happen if the right elements are present. What would those elements be? A band consisting of.... ASIA John Wetton - Bass and Vocals Geoff Downes - Keyboards and Backing Vocals Carl Palmer - Drums Guitar - ???? A guitarist has not been confirmed but a search is underway. For now, Steve Howe would most likely not join the original line-up. As for a merging of the GD/JP version of ASIA with the JW/GD/CP version, John says "Don't hold your breath". That is something John and Carl have no interest in doing. John and Carl are speaking daily about future plans. For unrelated reasons John will be meeting with Keith Emerson in the near future, possibly to work on a project together. They feel the original line-up or something close to that, is needed to crack the American market. John feels that if ASIA reforms their main target will be America and Japan with a keen eye towards American radio. And if the right elements don't come together and ASIA disappears as quickly as it appeared? John feels that is an option he can live with. He says he has some of the best musicians in his band right now and he's happy to keep going solo, making records he enjoys and working with people he likes. John pointed to recent concert reviews which have been nothing short of glowing. He says the fans are ecstatic though he is a aware that the largest ASIA fan base is in America and Japan. But at the same time, he says ASIA will only happen if we want it to happen. ASIA has nothing to prove except to make great music. John says one thing is for certain, he will continue to make music with or without the DRAGON. Sorry, I have one request. I have only one chapter of Emo's autobiography (about Roger-fox). Can somebody sends me the others? Many Thanks !!! My e-mail: manticore.fog@usa.net. Last night he introduced Carl Palmer and the doors opened to the man on the kit zipping out a 3 or 4 min version of his solo. You know the stuff, all over the kit fast/slow/jacket off/gongs and explosive finale. Excellent. And quite a magnificent looking kit as well, white with the ELP 'Coat of Arms' on the shells - the one that's on the 'Albert Hall' album cover. (What's he going to do now that Greg's left? - my money's on John Wetton for the job) A quick chat to Carl and when asked for advice it was 'Practice, and get a GOOD teacher'. I have no idea how good the Fanzine is, but on a different note, Tom Szakaly (Noddy's Puncture)and his girlfriend Mara and myself and my wife Lisa were guests at a gig of the band Ginger Pig in Northampton UK. Ginger Pig features Lee Jackson on bass and occasional vocals. They also have a fantastic bongo and percussionist who used to play in Santana. There music is New Orleans jazz and blues and the gig was brilliant. Before the gig we had a nice chat with Lee, he signed the booklet from the Nice Box set that came out a couple of years ago and invited us back to his house after the gig. Unfortunately we had to get back home to relieve the baby sitter, but as the band play every 2 weeks or so and Northampton is only 30 miles away, we will hopefully see Lee again and have a much longer chat about the old days. (p86) '...we savoured a charming rendition of several string ballads that occasioned the unobtrusive sheddings of not a few empathetic tears among the younger and more sensitive of our party, which offering was immediately followed by a performance, on the fortepiano, of unparalleled virtuosity and - I needs must record my true imrpession, dear Reader - viiolence, yet directed thankfully not towards the audience but rather upon the instrument itself; and I would not count it an exaggeration to affirm that never had any civilised company so assembled witnessed such grotesque juxtaposition of skill and savagery, yet with such fine music the consequence; the mayhem - for mayhem, dear Reader, it assuredly was, and of a like hitherto not seen in polite society - accompanied throughout by the relentless and captivating percussive genius of the trio's third participant.' (p88) '...that I had the occasion to visit Messrs Blundell, fortepiano and clavichord restorers, where arrangements were made, and a sum agreed, for the rectification of an ill-used fortepiano, and removal of blades from its mechanisms; the inevitable price - one might have cause to reflect - for an evening of unsurpassed conviviality...' The solo Keith Emerson plays in the middle of Knife Edge is in two main parts. The first part seems to be an improvisation over three base notes derived from the Janacek theme. I don't know if there are any brief quotes within the right hand part, but it seems on the face of it to be pure Emerson. The closing part consists of the hauntingly beautiful opening section of Bach's French Suite #1 in D minor, and the score for this should be readily available from a good sheet music store. It was a keyboard piece in the first place, so it doesn't need any arranging. The 'live in Poland' version is very revealing because it's recorded in such a way that the left-hand counterpoint can be heard very clearly.
