Sorry for the delay between Digests. The good news is that I'm just about to start installing some software I bought to help me manage the ELP Digest mailing list more efficiently. If all goes according to plan, the new software will reduce the amount of editing I have to do and will let me manage the "digesting" portion of the Digest efficiently enough to let me get back to the 1-2 weeks between Digests (like the "good old days"). Lots of interesting info here including speculation about a possible joint venture between Keith and Rick Wakeman for the summer of 2000, new web interviews with Keith as well as Robert Berry, etc. Thanks for reading. - John - ------------------------------------------------------------ From: Rodrigo Werneck , on 5/21/99 8:28 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Emerson & Wakeman together? Hi John, Once again thanks for the great work with the ELP Digest. Do you know about this? [ Editor's Note: Thanks for passing that along. It's the first I've heard of it. It certainly sounds interesting... - John - ] ======================================================== Wakeman Says Yes to Ozzy, Emerson Former Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, in the midst of promoting his latest release - Return to the Centre of the Earth - reveals that he and fellow virtuoso Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer are planning a joint tour for the summer of 2000 that should be heaven for progressive rock fans and a bull's eye for the genre's detractors. Wakeman says he and Emerson, friendly rivals during their respective bands' '70s heydays, have been talking about doing such a tour for several years. "But we both would get very busy," Wakeman says, "and then the managers and everybody on the business end would come in and make it a lot harder to do." But during a lunch last year in London, Wakeman and Emerson resolved to hash things out themselves and finally put the tour in motion. Wakeman envisions an amphitheater tour during which he and Emerson would play together for virtually the entire show, possibly backed by orchestras in each city. The repertoire would be drawn from their recorded work and possibly from classical pieces that have influenced the two of them. There might also be guest singers since, he notes, "neither Keith nor I actually sing." Meanwhile, Wakeman is also hoping to stage some version of Return to the Centre of the Earth, a conceptual extravaganza which, like its 1974 predecessor, is based on Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The new work is narrated by Star Trek: The Next Generation's Patrick Stewart and features cameos from Ozzy Osbourne, the Moody Blues Justin Hayward, ex-Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin, Bonnie Tyler, and ex-Wave Katrina Leskanich. "There's going to be - somehow, somewhere - a performance," promises Wakeman, who also hosts a weekly comedy show on British television. "To put it bluntly, it's going to cost a lot, with the orchestra, the choir, all the guests we want to be involved. [Album cover artist] Roger Dean has already designed the stage set, which probably costs more than the state of Idaho, knowing Roger. Everybody's waiting to see how the CD does; if it starts doing OK, I don't think we'll have trouble getting sponsorship and other necessary things on board to do he concert." - Gary Graff ======================================================== All the best, Rodrigo Werneck rod@uriah-heep.com webmaster@ken-hensley.com [ Editor's Note: Just to make it clear, the Keith/Rick project being discussed seems to be a vision of something that, if it happens, would happen next summer. In the tradition of the late Karl Edward Wagner -- Fantasy, SF, and Horror author and editor, who wrote such short stories as "Did They Get You to Trade?" and "At First Just Ghostly" -- I have titled several of my short stories in tribute to my favorite band. "Only Spectres Still Have Pity" is now published on the Web in the first issue of the webzine THE GRIMOIRE . Juergen Fritz has signed the deal to begin recording of a new Triumvirat concept album starting May 1999. Visit www.triumvirat.net for more details on this and the news that all Triumvirat works will be re-released on CDs in 1999. St. Louis, Missouri on June 5 1999 at Centenary Church and on June 7 at Off Broadway nightclub has an extremely important progressive keyboard event. Barry Palmer (from Triumvirat and Mike Oldfield fame) joins with Par Lindh Project and Alaska for a one time only concert extravaganza. June 5 venue holds 1200 people and will use the full church pipe organ & grand piano along with the assorted array of synth keys, drums, etc. The June 7 venue holds 350 people and will use the Hammond C-3. Both concerts should have at least 4 hours of music and are available to fans around the world by advance video orders that only cost $35 plus shipping. Tickets are available by many easy methods. Just visit www.triumvirat.net for full details on tickets ($18), videos, and information about the performers and venues. Highlights of the concerts will include the world premiere of Barry Palmer's new solo material with Alaska joining in. Triumvirat music never performed live or not performed in two decades will be done by both PLP and Alaska with Barry singing the vocals. Favorite songs from at least 4 Triumvirat albums are already planned, and everyone will be well pleased with these great artists working together. PLP will be doing a medley of ELP music including Jerusalem, Sheriff, Blues Variations, & more. Of course Rondo will be done and PLP's King Crimson selections will be done. Alaska has Hoedown & other surprises in store for fans. Imagine hearing Par live on church organ like in the PLP CDs and on a real grand piano. The artists also cooperate by sharing intruments such as the keyboards and drums which gives more time for music than at typical concerts. The videos will become very rare collector items when they are shipped in July and St. Louis is easy to reach. Get tickets before they sell out, and order the videos now to avoid the rush after the concerts (3 cameras will be used by a professional videographer so that no editing will be needed). There is a simple form on www.triumvirat.net or just follow e-mail & phone directions on the website. If anyone only has access to e-mail and needs information about the concerts, tickets by mail, or getting videos by mail, then contact me by e-mail at joe@triumvirat.net . Note that both Juergen Fritz & Par know Keith Emerson. If ELP fans convince Keith to talk with Juergen, Par, Rick Wakeman, & others such as Igor from YES, we might convince them to all play together just one time somewhere for the Millenium. I thought of PLP joining Triumvirat on stage about a year ago and that has partially become true with the initial phase in June. I hope that all my fellow ELP fans will help continue this push for the return of progressive keyboard rock by supporting these concepts of the newer stars joining with our heroes from the seventies. Good luck to RIck's new epic tour, Juergen's reformation of Triumvirat efforts, the growing succuss of PLP, Barry, Alaska, Asia's return, and to whatever Keith decides to do in the near future. Oh well. - John - ] John, here in Italy the situation is slightly different... As you may know, Italy has been one of the countries in which progressive rock went to really high points, both in interest between people (recors sold) and in the development of an high level "school" of progrock bands: Banco, PFM, area, Rovescio della Medaglia, and so on. So a memory of what happende in the seventies is present, although not very frequent. Recently I joined a prog band as keyboardist, and consequently made many new friends of age around 20-25, many of them rock players, who almost all are very interested in ELP music, and who have been istantaneously captured by the music of our beloved trio when they didn't know ELP. (this on my personal side). Moreover, I saw about 2 years ago a pic of ELP on the "l'Espresso" magazine (equivalent to TIME in Italy for authoritativeness and circulation) in an article entitled "sometimes they come back" or something like this centered around progressive rock resurgence in the nineties; Still, interesting new rock magazines have begun to talk diffusely (and seriously, without putting on legends) about prog. Don't expect to listen to BSS on the radio, however! ;-) Thanks for your attention Adriano ------------------------------ Digest subscrition, mailing address, and administrative stuff to: elp-digest-request@reluctant.com ELP-related info that you want to put in the digest to: elp-digest@reluctant.com Back issues are available from the ELP Digest web site: URL: http://www.brain-salad.com/ Note: The opinions, information, etc. contained in this digest are those of the original message sender listed in each message.
