As the Mathematical Millenium is not due for another year we'll this time focus on 1999. And true to tradition we'll look deeply into our wants and wishes, wanton or not. And let us admit it at the beginning. Despite high expectations 12 months ago, this year has been rather disappointing. We'll have to go way back to 1995 to find a year with so few ELPish highlights. Still there's an impressive amount of releases, rereleases, albums more trhan coincidentally inspired by ELP, and tributes. Then to business. The jury has this year nominated the following: Category 1: ELP related CD's of 1998 1: "The Christmas Album" - rerelease of Keith's solo album, finally with all tracks and remastered. And with liner notes in Keith unmistakable "tongue-in-cheek"-style. 2: "Honky" - finally on CD. 3: "Music for the Third Millenium" - Alongside rarieties from other well known keyboardists (Wakeman, Moraz, Tomita etc.) Keith does one of his least known pieces, "Katoh San" from 1992. 4: "1 PM" - this one and only album by Carl's band PM from 1980 is at least of historical interest and has finally been remastered and released on CD. 5: "Encores, Legends and Paradox" - this Magna Charta tribute CD is a magnificent step up from last years triple-CD tribute - and what a set of musicians. 6: "Live in America" - the Pär Lindh Project (PLP) phenomenon is getting bigger as proved on this CD. There's more than a nod to ELP as PLP tackles "Allegro Barbaro", "Jerusalem", "Rondo" and "21st Century Schizoid Man" as well as a long string of tracks strongly influenced by Bach, Keith and the Chartres Cathedral. 7: "Baba Yaga" - the Norwegian fiddler Annbjoerg Lien released a new strong album, with Bjoern Ole Rasch on keyboards. Though not due in America for some weeks this album really kicks and transcends muscial boundaries, combining traditional Norwegian music with Mussorgsky, World and a touch of Keith. Like the Witch Baba Yaga Annbjoerg performs magic. With hauntingly beautifull music she's a force to be reckoned with. 8: "Prophesies" - Hermetic Science and author/composer/player Ed Macan once again succeeds in bringing a wonderfull vision to the musical world. The album contains several grand moments and a stunning live piano version of Tarkus. The jury once again had a hard job - another close race. However, and despite its Norwegian inclinations, the decision was after all not difficult. And the winner is - due to its undisputed and in fact rather original ELPishness (fah - fah - fah - faaah!): "Encores, Legends and Paradox". A big applause! Category 2: ELP related videos of 1999: None released, no winner, no loser, no fun. Category 3: ELP related books of 1998 Honorable mention goes to Chris Welch and his "Close to the Edge" as well as to "Inside Tracks: A First Hand History of Popular Music from the World's Greatest Record Producers and Engineers" - for demonstrating the possibility of good writing on Prog Icons - and for interesting and amusing anecdotes involving Mr. Emerson, Mr. Lake and Mr. Palmer. Category 4: ELP on the Web While ELP related home pages last year just exploded, this year there was a healthy growth. The official number went from 22 to 32 on the ELP web ring, however several are for some reason not included there. Not the least of these is http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/elptheshowneverends, an ELP Message Board recently started. Another addition this year is the ELP community which since spring daily has been interacting on ELP-DISC@onelist.com and available on http://clickme.onelist.com/community/ELP-DISC. Anyone who joins this list will understand why honorable mention has to go to Bobby Simmons and (among other pages) his http://www.villagenet.com/~boo And both Impressions Web site on http://www.interx.net/~jgreen/impressions.html and the ELP Digest on http://www.brain-salad.com/ has had good face lifts and improvements this year. And not the least - Greg's page has been kept interesting and Keith has gotten a page which really seem promising, on http://www.keithemerson.com/. And the winner is (bum-ba-pah-pah) ELP-DISC@onelist.com, both because it provides daily doses of ELP and related, founded (well - it has happened!) and unfounded (all the time) arguments, criticisms and rumours - and because it gives opportunity for building and keeping ELP friendships on a regular/daily/minutely basis. Category 5: ELP related magazines Only one candidate this year and hence not difficult to pick the winner, "Impressions" of course! Category 6: Highest Hopes for next year Though not as hopefull as last year the pipeline still has some possible gems for 2000. To mention perhaps the most probable ones: * Keith's solo albums, at least his Retrospective and a piano album * Greg's solo albums (rereleases and a new) * Carl retrosprective (with his Percussion Concerto!) * TWO ELP books, one of them by Ed Macan, the other by among others Frank Askew * Keith recording (and hopefully releasing) with (as Jon Anderson once said) - ah, on keyboards - Mr. Rick Wakeman! But the winner must be Keith doing a piano tour with local Symphony Orchestras! If none of this come to pass we'll yell and cry and rise or fists to the sky. And stubbornly keep listening to the old stuff - not bad that either. If this annual review seems to have a more mellow tone than last year, its because being (somewhat of) a pessimist increases the probability of pleasent surprises... In between sets, they played the "Fanfare video" (filmed during a rehearsal at Olympic Stadium earlier that spring) on the large video screens. I think the show opened with the orchestral Abaddon's Bolero. The 2nd set (I think) opened with Keith's concerto. I didn't get a chance to listen much (darn work, ya know) but he talked about his Christmas album, and he did mention trying to work with Rick Wakeman (as has been rumored for some time now). Not much news really, but I was excited that Keith is plugging himself, makes me hope for big things in 2000. Stay warm and safe John, and you know we still appreciate the hard work and great job you do with the digest. Peace, Ted O ------------------------------ From: "Jim Smith" , on 11/12/99 7:46 PM: To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Emerson's compositions and covers Hi, Folks, I want to discuss Emerson's music as composition and some recent covers, but first, I'd like to let anyone who's interested know that I have a new email address. I'm the Jim Smith that many of you know as smithj @ sr.hp.com, and I've been with the digest since before the beginning. I've received a new business address, and in order to help minimize spam there, I've set up a dedicated address for my ELP correspondence, at emofan@hotmail.com. In ELP Digest Volume 9 Issue 10 (10 November 1999), Jason Sobol and Avi Schwab independently provided some critical thoughts about the ELP tribute album "Encores Legends and Paradox." Although I am happy that the record exists, and enjoy listening to it, I generally agree with the criticisms; I was disappointed that it wasn't truer to the original music, and where it deviated, it often seemed to fall short of the original arrangements, or dismissed the original pieces to a great degree (as in "The Endless Enigma" (compositionally) and "The Sheriff" (lyrically and compositionally)). As a musician and Keith Emerson fan, the aspect of ELP's music that I find the most interesting is Keith Emerson's compositions. I feel that his melodies, harmonizations, and orchestrations are generally literate, unique, and very powerful. I prefer in general to hear treatments of his music that honor the original arrangements. For example, I would have found it much more interesting to hear a re-arrangement of the fugue in the middle of "The Endless Enigma" than the short and relatively shallow piano improvisation that was placed there. In other words, I'd rather hear Keith's music adapted as one would adapt classical or jazz music than how one would usually adapt folk or pop music. In my (biased) opinion, his music merits such serious treatment, and in that way the tribute album somewhat missed the mark. Has anyone heard the other recent tribute album? I think it's called "Fanfare for the Pirates." I would be very interested in reviews of that expensive album before I consider purchasing it. For those of you who would like to hear performances of Emerson's music that are truer to his original compositions, I have a couple of recommendations: As originally posted here by Shannon Ford when their CD first came out, the saxophone quartet "Sax 4th Avenue" (email: Sax4thAve@aol.com) has a delightful CD entitled "Delusions de Grandeur" which includes an impressive (and quite cheeky) arrangement of most of "Tarkus" for sax quartet, as well as an arrangement of Friedrich Gulda's "Fugue" which was performed by Emerson as part of the "Piano Improvisation" from "Welcome Back My Friends..." Although this CD is worth purchasing for those two tracks, it also contains several other impressive and humorous pieces, including a rag in seven time, King Crimson's "Frame By Frame," and an amusing arrangement of Rossini themes entitled "Rossini a la Carte." This CD is one of my favorites in my collection, and has become the favorite of my 14-year-old clarinetist daughter as well. If you're interested in alternative arrangements of ELP tunes, as well as Emerson influences, and jazz, classical, and fun music, I highly recommend this CD. I just checked with Sax 4th Avenue, and the CD is still available directly from the band. (Excuse me if I sound like a commercial here; I'm not affiliated with 'em, but since this information is hard to find, I think it's probably worth posting here.) To order, those interested can send a check for $17 ($15, tax included, for the CD and $2 for shipping and handling) made out to Sax 4th Avenue. The address to send the order to is: Sax 4th Avenue 3361 Romaker Road Toledo OH 43615-1432 My second recommendation involves some waiting, but I guarantee it will be worth it. In a recent interview with Liv Whetmore of "Impressions" magazine ( http://www.keithemerson.com/interview.html ), Keith Emerson announced that he is working on a live album of the concert in San Francisco the he played with Marc Bonilla, Glenn Hughes, et al. (That interview contains some very interesting information about his other plans as well!) I feel very fortunate to have attended this concert as well as the one the night before in Santa Cruz. These were two of the best performances by Keith that I've ever had the privilege of attending or hearing. He and the band were in fantastic form, having a great time, and he was in his best element, in my opinion: surrounded by truly great musicians who were totally into that fresh collaboration. This album, when released, will undoubtedly become a favorite for folks who, like me, favor the compositional (as well as performance) aspects of Emerson's music. Keith, I hope you finish it soon, because I can barely wait! Also I have in my possesion a promo disk from the Melody Maker (UK) of the Brain Salad Surgery album containing the original title track not included on the album but released a few years later as the 'B' side of Fanfare for the common man. It also contains snippets of the album tracks. It is pressed on floppy vinyl and come in a mini version of the album cover. I am wondering if this is of any value, not that I want to part with it. Also the Lyrics for Closer to Believing. i am closer to believing than i ever was before on the crest of this elation must I crash upon the shore and with the driftwood of acquaintance light the fire to love once more I am wind blown...I am times. To be closer to believing To be just a breath away On the death of inspiration I would buy back yesterday Bu there's no crueller illusion There's no sharper price to pay As I reach out... it slips away. From the opium of custom To the ledges of extremes Don't believe it till you've held it Life is seldom what it semms But lay your heart upon the table And in the shuffling of dreams Remember who on earth you are. I need me You need you We want us. But of course you know I love you Or what else am I here for Only you not face to face But side by side for evermore And I need to be here with you For wothout you what am I Just another fool out searching For some heaven in the sky Take me closer to believing Take me forward lead me on Through collision and confusion While there's life beneath the sun You are the reason I continue SO near for so long So close yet so far away. I need me You need you We want us to live forever Don't let the curtain fall Measure after measure Of writing on the wall That burns so brightly It blinds us all. I need me You need you We want us to be together On sundays in the rain Closer than forever Against or with the grain To ride the storms of love again. So be closer to believing Though your world is torn apart For a moment changes all things And to end is but to start And if your journey's unrewarded May your god lift up your heart You are wind blown But you are mine Hope this fulfills and may I just say the Works Live version always moves me to near tears.
