(May 13, 2001) =========================== Prelude =========================== Hi. The end of May arrives with greater anticipation than we've seen in a few years. We await any updated new on Keith's reported Piano Concerto #2. Greg is preparing for his tour with Ringo's All-Starr Band. Carl is preparing a tour with his new band, 'Palmer'. Reports of new, improved remixes of ELP 'classic' material and maybe even some long-shelved live shows. And, for a change, not all of the action is in the US. Not to mention there are even a few messages in here to challenge our perceptions of what we really should expect for future ELP-related activity. Read on... - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites ... Tour information for Greg Lake's appearances with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band has been updated at www.greglake.com and www.ringotour.com/2001/2001schedule.htm, and the Ringo Tour page now has links that take you directly to the vendor (Ticketmaster, Metrotix, etc.) to order tickets for many (but not all) of the concerts listed. More tickets go on sale for various venues each weekend, mostly at www.ticketmaster.com -- be sure to do a search for "Ringo" because the tour appears under several different listings. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, June 2, 2001 for the Portsmouth, VA show ... and the following weekend for the Englewood, CO show ... and the weekend after that for the Tunica, MO show. Tickets are already on sale for Sterling Heights MI, Chester WV, Boston MA, Jones Beach NY, Holmdel NJ, Atlantic City NJ, St. Louis MO, Chicago IL, Woodinville WA, Concord CA and San Diego CA , and maybe others, too. Tickets may be sold out for the LA show -- Ticketmaster is no longer selling tickets "for that event at this time." Check back with Ticketmaster, or see if there's any news on the Ringo Tour guest forum at http://ringotour.com/2001/2001forum.htm. You'll also see entries there from some familiar contributors to the ELP Digest! Other updates: Greg's site has new additions to the 1973 entries under "Were You There?" at http://www.greglake.com/wereyou.html - and Greg's management has issued a news release about his site relaunch including details on "Greg Lake Radio." If you haven't visited yet, check it out at www.greglake.com/themusic.html. Two more dates have been posted for Carl's band "Palmer" at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html ... The current schedule is: July 16: Crew The Limelight Club July 18: London Festival Hall July 19: Bilston Robin 2 July 20: Deal Astor Theatre July 26: Beverley Picture House July 28: Rotherham Classic Rock Society =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: bjorn-are.davidsen@telenor.com Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2001 4:07 AM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Marvelous releases from Sanctuary Records! I just got the new collection "Fanfare for the Common Man", which contains the Sanctuary remasters of a lot of material, and I'm amazed by the sound! Except for the Brain Salad DVD-audio (and perhaps the Mobile Fidelity Ultra Discs), this is IMHO the best remastering of ELP stuff so far! I've never heard Barbarian or Take a Pebble this good! Finally the material has got the sound it deserves! The BSS release is also extremely interesting. Its a fantastic remix, rather like the Rhino DVD-audio release, though, I believe, not identical. This remix is without the reverb and compression laden sound that has damaged earlier releases. Now the instruments jump out of the speakers, and be really sure you don't have valuable objects on your shelves or walls when Greg's bass and Carl's bass drum start up. The bonus tracks could have been better (e.g. unreleased live material, as on the Sanctuary Trilogy release), but its still interesting to hear the BSS session material ("Brain Salad Surgery" and "When the Apple Blossoms Bloom...") in its original context. Some may have misgivings about remixes, and I agree that some artists have suffered from silly work in this area. On the other hand, some remixings have been done so well that it's impossible to listen to the previous version any more. There was a stunning "Machine Head" remix released a few years ago (in the 25 Years Anniversary Series), along with a second CD with a remastered version of the original mix. The remixing made it possible to really hear the solos and different instruments, and did (AFAIK) even include solos which had been left out from the LP. It's so much better that it must be heard. And it's the same with the BSS DVD-audio release. Even if I don't have a surround rack, the DVD-remix is the only version I have been able to listen to the last months - until the Sanctuary mix! So even if none of the Sanctuary CD's had had any bonus material, these are the editions to get for yourselves, your friends, wives, kids, parents, cousins, sisters, aunts, second cousins, third cousins, nephews, colleagues, uncles, neighbors and local congressmen! Well worth the money, even if it as for me is the seventh time I buy BSS (so far I've got it on 2 LP's, 3 CD's and 1 DVD-audio)! But this is the last time I get the original albums - the new and better sound has made me long even more for new material from the boys! Seems to be no end to the Marvels finding Sanctuary at the moment ;-) According to the Portabello town site there are lots of planned releases by Sanctuary records: Box Set (cmxbx330) - Presumably "Return of the Manticore"? Black Moon (cmrcd227) Live at The Royal Albert Hall (cmcrdc228) Works Live (cmcddd229) - Hopefully in an astonishing remaster and remix ;-) And then finally, the really great news which I've been waiting for since first joining ELP Digest back in '94 or something, ELP releasing bootlegged shows!! The ones on Sanctuary's list are: Gaelic Park (cmrcd310) Venue undecided (cmddd311) - This means there are several more options!!! Birmingham (cmddd312) Louisville (cmddd313) New York (cmddd314) Witchita (cmddd315) Buffalo (cmddd316) New Haven (cmddd317) Again we see that ELP has stuff available as they've said, even if not always when promised ;-) 2001 may really be THE ELP year, looking at the number of new releases and marvellous remasterings/remixings, Greg touring with Ringo, Keith perhaps releasing a new album of solo piano pieces (Piano Concerto 2 seems scheduled for next year) and Carl releasing lots of stuff from his vaults, as well as performimg Drum Clinics all over the place and starting a new trio playing ELP and other music on the "dark side of prog"! Looking at the "ELP Archive" material above, its interesting to ponder what shows these are. Here's my proverbial Cents: "Gaelic Park" - I guess this is the Sep 01, 71 show in Bronx, available on boots such as Callow Crash & Idle Eyes and Tours of America pt. 3, as well as on compilations like "Live at Anaheim 75" (also containing Welcome Back stuff, and notoriously mislabeled). The track list may be Barbarian, Take a Pebble pt I, Lucky Man, piano impros, Tank, Take a Pebble pt II, Tarkus, Knife Edge and Rondo? "Birmingham" - Several options: Dec 11,71 or Nov 24, 72 or even (though I hope not) Nov 27, 92. My hope is Nov 24, 72! "Louisville" - I guess this is April 21, 72? May imply we'll get Abbadons Bolero, or at least Endless Enigma. Hope beyond hope? "New York" - This may be ANY year... "Witchita" - May be the April 24, 1974 show? "Buffalo" - Finally! Must be the incredible, amazing, perplexing July 26,74 show! "New Haven" - May be the sans orchestra show from Nov 30, 1977 - in that case interesting! Or the April 4, 1972? Or even Dec 14, 1973? Or perhaps the 1994 show - also interesting, as they had changed the set list rather a lot since "Royal Albert Hall", as shown at the excellent "Live at Wiltern"-boot. They seem to really have enjoyed playing at New Haven ;-) In any case this is great news! I just can't wait - though as an ELP fan I've really learned to;-) Yours Bjørn Are =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: njatl [jauger@midway.uchicago.edu] Sent: Monday, April 30, 2001 5:13 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com; Alasova@btinternet.com Subject: remasters Hi there! When I was in England last month I came across the three newly released CD's (ELP, Pictures, and Tarkus). I can personally vouch for the sound quality. Everything sounds fantastic and well mixed. This is especially exciting because now in the US Rhino Records is the distributor of the albums and I personally think they sound TERRIBLE. The special edition Brain Salad with the holographic color sounded especially irritating. Where were the drums?! Also, it seemed to be mastered especially low... The new Castle release of Pictures at an Exhibition really shines. The sound is not only very clear, but it's mixed better to compensate for the live sound (something I don't think was ever done before.) The newly recorded studio version of Pictures (first time I've heard it yet) sounds great too. However, I don't recommend these CDs for their sound quality alone. The liner notes are AMAZING. They are huge fold outs with stories about the albums' conceptions and recordings. They are full color and have lots of rare pictures. The liner notes are written by Martyn Hanson, writer of the Band Biography that just came out and are clearly informed. I read stuff on the liners I HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE. They alone make it worth the price of the CDs, which you can buy through independents stores like http://www.artists-shop.com or the independent sellers that sell on eBay sometimes. Since the CD trays themselves list all the other ELP albums as "also available," but I was unable to find any except the three I purchased, I emailed Castle and asked them for info. I just wanted to give everyone a clue about Ringo and the All Starr Band and to encourage everyone to go if they get a chance. I saw Ringo's show on June 17, 2000 at the Hard Rock Hotel ( in "The Joint"). Ringo surrounded himself with excellent musicians and throughout the evening each was afforded the spotlight as they played some of their own tunes. Jack Bruce played bass and their version of The Cream's "White Room" was delicious. Jack sung very well and they really rocked the place. One is not likely to get such a variety of Rock styles from any other concert with Beatles tunes, Ringo originals, and each members own hit songs. I will venture to guess that this year's incarnation will include some of Greg Lake's more famous works. "Lucky Man," no doubt, and probably "From the Beginning." It would be interesting to know how they come up with the set list. Oh to be a fly on the wall at one of those meetings . . . Ringo: So Greg, do you still throw knives into your organ? Greg: That wasn't my organ, Ringo!!! I sing and play guitar!!! Ringo: Oh sorry, I must've been thinking of that bloke who sold me those impossible drums. I am looking forward to any reports/concert reviews that our faithful digest readers can write. Alas, Ringo's show will not be coming to an outdoor amphitheater near me - though I may attempt a road trip to see what promises to be a great show. Peace, Love, and keep up the good work all you ELP fans! What I think most drummers these days recognise is that he lacks the ability to really groove. As with all music, times change things and being fast does not count as much in recorded music. The style of drumming that swept in through the 80's was highly technical but also absolutely in the pocket/groove orientated. Playing was stripped down and a whole new wave of players emerged. I'm afraid Carl has been left behind long ago in this area. Why is it that he did not make the top 50!!! drummers in the Rhythm (UK based magazine for drummers) millennium vote, nor did he make the top 100 beats of all time. I'd like to say I don't know but I think most drummers do know, Carl's playing is unique thrilling but drumming has moved on. Check out Mike Portnoy. This is not criticism - it is about acceptance, times change, drumming changes - in his day CP was no 1, but now there is a new force out there." Graham, what I am about to say is in no way to be construed as an attack upon you personally, but I must say that your comments really got me fired up. Your comments are all too typical of society and human nature in general. So many people want whatever is new, fresh, different. How quickly people forget the great masters of the past ! There is a very good reason why a mid-60's Ferrari Dino is highly coveted by car collectors; it's one heckuva fine car !! Sure, sure, maybe it's now 'new' and maybe it used technology that is now considered out of date, but that does not diminish it's value or appeal, by any stretch of the imagination. I like music that is based on quality, originality, and ferocious talent. This may or may not mean something 'new' or 'fresh'. I have been listening to 'music' all my life, and I still have yet to hear ANY band that has the power, originality, talent, and uniqueness of the mighty ELP ! When such a band (or drummer) comes along, I will happily add them to my list of preferred artists (which is a very short list, by the way). Many people allow themselves to be buffeted by the winds of fashion, but a few of us stay the course that we know to be right and true. In the end, time will tell on all things. I promise you that in the future, the music of ELP will be remembered as being up there with the giants of rock (even though they are scorned by the 'critics' of today). On the other hand, many of the artists in the here and now (and many of the drummers on those lists you mentioned) will probably be 'here today, gone tomorrow'. Well excuse me for having a different opinion on this. My reason is that not staying in the Usa, I have had the chance to see Elp live once, being a fan since 1975, just when they went quiet, obviously my timing was rubbish, but there you go. I just find it a bit funny when Greg Lake says "it's great to be back home" in the Video of the Royal Albert Hall, not that great to have actually played more than once in nearly 20 years. and how many more live albums do they expect us to buy Don't misunderstand, I am a fan of the group but please lets get things in perspective. If other groups of a similar size and following (Yes, JTull, Genesis etc) could do tours of the Uk so could Elp. Some Questions Why did Elp not play the Uk more often? I have recently seen Carl in clinic and he was staggering - his speed, facility, and technique continue to stagger and what was so nice was to see youngsters blown away by him. My point was that CP remains an icon but areas of drumming have moved on - especially in the groove areas. Most people would believe I think that CP's playing with ELP was far more suited to his style than Asia. It is also worth noting what an excellent entertainer he is at something as esoteric as a drum clinic. I have seen scores of players - including Terry Bozzio recently and none comes close to CP. What can I say - he remains my favourite drummer after 25 years and I will be buying the anthology on release tomorrow. Hi John: Do you have any idea what's up with the long-pending release of the California Jam set? [...] Everybody I work with think Emerson, Lake & Palmer is a law firm! Do The Suits think ELP's dwindling market will be around forever? If these guys cannot reconcile their differences, okay...if ELP won't be touring anymore, well...folks, as much as I've loved this band, let's be brutally honest: do we really want to see the musical equivalent of Kirk, Spock and McCoy "on deck" in their sixties? Why not let them quit while they're ahead? I think they made a strong comeback throughout the nineties. Why not go out with a bang? I personally have no desire to see E, L, & P roll out on stage in wheelchairs (!) Now, after getting that blasphemy out of the way, what's up with all of this vintage material purportedly buried away in those archive vaults? Don't these guys know the veritable gold mine they're sitting on? I can't think of anything sweeter for this die-hard ELP fanatic than to have a two or three CD set released, chock full of alternate vintage live cuts from the seventies! I'd be sequestered under the headphones for a month! Finally, if and when the Cal Jam stuff sees the light of day, how about making it available immediately as a DVD release? I'm so tired of my sixth-generation copy; yet I can still tell how good a job ABC did with that camera work (should've used that camera crew to videotape the Montreal Works show; woefully inadequate lighting for the video cameras of that period! ). If you could possible pass this along to the proper source, I'd be eternally grateful! Thanks, always, for the superb job you continuously do in editing all of this venting! [ Editor's Note: I don't have any extra information about the infamous CalJam performance but I'm another fan who would love to have a copy. However, to be fair, I feel I should point out that there have always been trouble with getting the rights to the CalJam performance. The copyrights, etc. were owned by ABC or Dick Clark Productions or whoever it was that made the TV show. I've heard (unofficially) at various times that the asking price for the footage has been high or that the quality of the master has degraded over the years, etc. So, I hope we all get to re-live that performace and, like you, hope to hear some good news on the subject if any progress is ever made. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: Brian Glock [bglock@jagunet.com] Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2001 7:45 PM To: arnold@reluctant.com Subject: ELP + ABC = The Beast Hi all, Anyone else watching the Drew Carey Season finale Wednesday night.....?...... It is true that the recent UK DVD release of the video is the 40 min. 'Pictures' only edit of the concert, although it also includes an CD-audio only version of the track as a 'bonus' on the flip side. Rather pointless really. Luckily, VAP video in Japan have released the complete, uncut 96 minute version of the video on DVD as part of their Super Rock Series. It is a straight re-issue of their Laserdisc edition from the late 90's, right down to the cover. The catalogue number is VPBR-11133 and the disc is NTSC and regionally coded for Region 2 (Japan and Europe). The standard cost is 3800 yen. For those with the necessary equipment to playback this pressing, it comes highly recommended. If Image Entertainment in the US decide to dust off their 'Pictures' video and reissue it in the States at some point, it will most likely also be the edited version like their Laserdisc was so the Japanese version is probably the only way you'll be able to get the complete recording.
