Just as we were getting ready to edit this edition, the first reviews of the 'All-Starr' Band tour with Greg Lake on bass/vocals started coming in. So, this is the first part and is chock full of the latest ELP news and discussion. The second part will contain concert reviews (including spoilers for those of you who don't want to know the set lists) of both the summer's "Palmer" shows and the "All-Starr Band" shows. There's already a lot to read so I'll stop now. Note that the "All-Starr" band is scheduled to be on the Today Show here in the US on Friday morning - this Friday, August 3. More details below. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites ... From Greg Lake's official site comes news that "a few more dates have been added to the Ringo tour schedule as well as direct links to order tickets for most of the venues" - check it out at http://www.greglake.com/whatsnew.html Also, as of Monday morning, July 30, tickets were again available for the L.A. performance from www.ticketmaster.com - just search under "Ringo." Non-Ringo updates on Greg's site include a number of new items on the Links page at http://www.greglake.com/links.html ... and additions to Greg Lake Desert Island Discs at http://www.greglake.com/island.html In addition to the reviews in the special "spoiler" edition of the Digest, you can watch for even more reviews, interviews and news releases about the All-Starr Band's performances at http://www.ringotour.com/2001/2001reviews.htm Exciting news from Carl's official site! While the first leg of the "Palmer" tour is over, "... more dates have already been added for October, with others yet to be finalized, and Carl informs us that 'we are looking at the U.S. for 2002'." Watch for updates at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html ... but here is a "partial schedule" with "more dates" to follow: Oct 10th Crew - THE LIME LIGHT CLUB Oct 11th TBA Oct 12th Cardiff - Mount Stewart Oct 13th TBA Oct 14th TBA Oct 15th TBA Oct 16th TBA Oct 17th Camden Town - Jazz Cafe Oct 18th TBA Oct 10th Swindon - TBA Also, http://www.carlpalmer.com/giftshop/ offers a new Atomic Rooster import CD available, including a special bonus track called "Play the Game." Here are the details: "Finally available! Carl Palmer's pre-ELP band, Atomic Rooster. Check out this debut album from Atomic Rooster, the band Carl formed between his time in The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown and ELP. Featuring singer/organist Vince Crane (another Arthur Brown alumnus) and guitarist/bassist Nick Graham. This powerful recording still holds up today. A classic album that was a very appropriate forerunner to Palmer's work in that other trio of the time.....Emerson, Lake & Palmer." No news on Keith's site this month, but see exciting news about his upcoming projects under "Breaking News." Update on the forthcoming book on The Nice 'Hang on to a Dream' by Martyn Hanson I have just been given a publication date of Autumn 2002 for my book. It will be published by Helter Skelter - the same company that published the ELP book. I am almost half way through and I should finish it by Christmas. I am in regular contact with Lee Jackson, Brian Davison and Bazz (roadie). I have also interviewed Brian Walkely, David Langston and Mike Kellie. I have promises of interviews from other 'players'. I have many new stories for this project. Bazz has given me access to his extensive personal archive. This includes rare photos, set lists and tour information etc. Has anybody got any photographs that could be used for the book? Thank you to all those who are helping me in this project. This just came in from Bjørn Are (Thanks!)... The following appears in a small article next to a picture of Keith... "In September, Sanctuary will release a Swedish radio recording of the Nice from their late-60s heyday. Keith Emerson revealed to RC that he has no fewer than seven other albums that he hopes to have issued in the near future, including a tape of the Nice's performance at New York's Filmore East in 1968, when they supported the Who. The tape has been 'baked' and remastered and includes 'several gems,' according to Keith. "He also has master tapes from late-60s TV shows, including one 'incredible quality' Norwegian set that includes 20 minutes of the Nice playing three songs. Other projects include a Nice anthology, as well as recordings from before his founding of the band, including unreleased material with the T-Bones. He also has tapes playing piano aged 14 and with Oscar Peterson, as well as The Iron Man soundtrack and a live Three set. "Emerson added that his Nice bandmates, bassist Lee Jackson and drummer Brian Davies 'forgave' him for forming ELP and that they 'hope to get something going' in the near future, once a record deal has been secured. "Emerson noted that ELP is also still part of his vision for the future, and that he has been recording a new 22-track solo album, Emerson On Emerson, as well as writing his second piano concerto. In addition, his autobiography is at an advanced stage and Keith hopes that his ELP colleagues Carl Palmer and Greg Lake will agree to its publication. Emerson asserted that its rock star excess content makes the Sex Pistols look like amateurs, and that the 500-page tome could be published next year. Finally, he and Rick Wakeman hope to form a keyboard equivalent to Joe Satriani's G3 guitar outfit - K3 - with a view to recording and touring in the future. Look out for RC's forthcoming interview with Keith Emerson." =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: jim mcmanus [jim.mcmanus1@ntlworld.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2001 6:36 PM To: bernd.prott@lfk.eads.net Cc: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Dear Bernd Pardon me for making you "feed" up???. If you don't like my suggestion then at least have some manners replying, it is to me as relevant as best albums, tracks, solo's. I find it more interesting to find out what people dislike and why, as when it comes to favourites with elp it seems that most folk have similar likes, BBS for example, although I received a email from someone who said that they were really fed up with Pictures, and would groan if they ever again heard Pirates, with which I personally would disagree. I did not suggest that anybody liking something ranked as crap, would automatically be branded as stupid, I actually have quite a soft spot for Love Beach, but in my heart I know that it is not really that good, but there you go. I don't understand that this topic must be consigned to history, and then get in to a right old lather about favourite live shows, and which ones should be released, well if the anorak fits. As i said at the end of my message "Please take these questions and opinions in the manner that they are offered, light heartedly, and if any one takes offence at my message then apologies in advance" but if you want to ignore that then that is fine, I hope you get your wish and get a 30cd box set !!!!! of live shows at least it will stop you from getting "feed up" Just flood my darkness cheers Jim --------------------------------------------- From: musicman@en.com Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2001 9:39 PM To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Subject: "Welcome Back" DVD John, Still love browsing over the Digest when I get them...keep it up! Anyway, I went to a local record store here in Cleveland, Ohio (The city that houses a place that ELP, Yes and other prog bands should be immortalized, but when will they get the clue that prog rock has some RnRHoF-worthy bands???) looking for some old Yes albums to increase my library of their music to get close to the amount of ELP CDs I have (all but 4 of them, if I remember correctly). While walking past the DVD-music section, one caught my eye...one I have been desperately looking for. "Emerson Lake and Palmer: Welcome Back" was sitting right in front of me, begging me to buy it. :) Anyway, I bought it and I have watched all 22 tracks over the past two days, and learned so much! Did you know ELP is known to have the record for the biggest crowd at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec? I advise anyone who doesn't have this DVD in their collection, to go and buy it, it's great! My hopes of news that he was recording this month with the LSO were dashed when EMI confirmed that they had indeed intended to complete a recording deal with him but that the project had, at least for this year, been shelved, Keith apparently having made insufficient progress on the proposed work to justify any recording sessions. Sorry to be the bearer of less than positive tidings. But at least we can stop holding our breath for the time being... Many, many thanks to John for the ever-excellent Digest. The copy of Brain Salad Surgery that I ordered from Amazon UK is a radical remix of the album as opposed to the version I have grown familiar with over the years. My overall opinion is that it is an interesting new look at a masterpiece, but not an improvement. The CD has facsimile autographs of our heroes plus the inclusion of bonus tracks "Brain Salad Surgery", "When the Apple Blossoms...", and the NME sampler album edits. My main criticism is that Emerson's keyboard parts are either mixed too far down in places or outright changed, and not for the better. Listen to the end of 1st Impression Pt 1 (final note is an echoing piano chord as opposed to the organ), or his spectacular solo in the middle of Pt 2, which has been choppily edited and loses the terrific momentum of the original. Just my two cents. I will be interested to read what other people think of the "new" BSS. Mike Werkman sooner77@yahoo.com --------------------------------------------- From: James L. It's great to see such a tribute to ELP in this video, and how the next generation of Prog "SPOCK'S BEARD" are bringing up their kids on ELP & Prog as well! There's also a short discussion on Greg Lake's lyrics to TARKUS in the video. This is really a GREAT video, and welcome addition to the SPOCK'S BEARD V CD, which is easily among the best progressive rock CDs to be produced in years! SPOCK'S BEARD is a great band if you have not heard them yet. You can buy the video at http://www.spockbeard.com & http://radiantrecords.com It was also reported in Classic Rock magazine that Carl Palmer went to see SPOCK'S BEARD live at their London Giglast October. MK I would usually be reluctant to recommend music to others because it is such a personal taste, but I would definitely like to second Martin's comments. As someone who has bemoaned the lack of much interesting, modern day progressive rock but still loves ELP, KING CRIMSON, etc, I can say that SPOCK'S BEARD has been my favorite "modern" group for a few years now - excellent musicians who sound influenced by the above-mentioned greats, without sounding like copies. A very full sound, lots of keyboards (piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron, synthesisers), the music has a lot of personality and stands up to repeated listenings... often when I'm listening to it, I find myself wondering why Emerson can't find people like this to play with... and hey, if Carl checked them out, you know they must have something... Hi, I just wanted to write in and suggest to everyone that they check out a band called LUNAR CHATEAU, who, in my opinion, is hands down the best Progressive rock band out there. They have been compared to ELP and have the same instrumentation as ELP-Lead Keyboards, Bass Guitar, and Drums. Having said this, they are extremely original and totally have their own sound, unlike most of the other bands in the lame so-called current Progressive rock genre. (Regressive and derivative is more like it). Lunar Chateau is managed by Bruce Pilato, who is also ELP's and Greg Lake's manager. They have 2 CD's out. They just released their new CD, entitled BEYOND THE REACH OF DREAMS. Just superb. Their first, self titled CD is just as great. Both CD's were released on the Musea label. I've heard that Carl Palmer is a fan of the band. The keyboard playing by Novak Sekulovich is stellar, lots of fast runs and with very, very unique progressions-a lot like Keith Emerson. The drummer, Milo Sekulovich is simply amazing. Just smokin'. This guy is one of the best drummers on the planet right now, and certainly the best drummer in Prog rock. I saw Lunar Chateau live about 3 years ago and what Milo does on record is so limited as to what he can do in concert. This guy is easily just as good as Carl Palmer in his 70's prime. My advice to every ELP fan is-CHECK THIS BAND OUT! Their website is www.lunarchateau.com Peace, Marc Dellenbach =========================== Questions (and Answers!) =========================== From: Mike Branick [Mike.Branick@noaa.gov] Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2001 8:19 AM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Peer Gynt Suite and ELP In response to the inquiry from Theresa Weaver (ELP Digest, Vol. 11 #6), the only use of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by ELP that I can recall is on a video I once saw of the Tokyo concert in 1972. This is probably a boot. Mr. Emerson included a few bars of it during his "Aquatarkus" synth solo. He probably worked it into a number of other performances, but I don't recall any of them appearing on any official releases. I'm interested to know if anyone else knows more about this. A quick check of the Emerson Musical Source Quote List (ELP Digest web site) also lists Aquatarkus as the only song in which "Hall of the Mountain King" was quoted. (BTW, I'll offer a couple additions to that list: a passage from Bernstein's "West Side Story" in "Creole Dance," and a bit of Rogers & Hammerstein's "Oklahoma" theme being played during a piano solo in Norman, OK to kick off the ELPowell concert in 1986. I believe they were doing "The Score" at the time.)
