I didn't get a chance to see if it was mentioned on TV last night, but supposedly, Bob Moog receoved a Grammy award. (Read on for the full report from the Digest reader who let us know about this.) This issue also includes a few notes about listings of some events in Europe for "The Carl Palmer Band with Greg Lake". Follow-up word from Greg Lake's management is that these postings were erroneous. They appear to be dates for the Carl Palmer band itself. (Still pretty exciting.) Some Carl Palmer drum clinics are starting to be advertised, too. Keith Emerson should appear on the UK's Radio 2 "Live from the Stables" radio show in the next month or so. Let's hope that the big band/jazz version of Tarkus (read on for the full description) makes its way to the airwaves soon. And, for once, the UK fans will get to hear something before us US fans! Thanks, too, to all of the people who responded about the "Touch and Go" quote. Also, let me put in a plug for the Keith Emerson Musical Quotes list on the ELP Digest web site (www.brain-salad.com). Jim Smith has taken on the task of updating it in honor of the late Steve Plotczyk. Some minor updates have been made and more will be added as Jim hears about them. So, if you're interested in this kind of thing, check it out. There's also a chance for you to contribute information for the upcoming book on the Nice. And thanks for Bjorn-are for his very good 2001 year in review of all things ELP. Thanks! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .… After hearing from two Digest readers (Michel Havenith and Perry Moree – thanks, guys!) we contacted Bruce Pilato and he confirmed that the report of Greg appearing in concert with the band Palmer was an error. (I also noted that the reference to Greg Lake on the venue's listing for the Palmer concert has been removed.) But Bruce added that Greg continues to work on new material and is also revisiting some of his classic songs with a new band ... and hopes to tour "sooner rather than later" to coincide with upcoming releases. There's also a complete rebuild of Greg's website coming soon. Watch for it at www.greglake.com Also on Greg's site, there are "new additions to the year 1977 in the Were You There section" at http://www.greglake.com/year1977.html Be sure to visit www.keithemerson.com -- it has a new look as well as new content. The long-awaited Iron Man CD is now available at http://www.e-zstore.com/emerson/ and there appear to be some new pictures at http://www.keithemerson.com/photography.html including Bob Moog astride a motorcycle (Keith's?). No new news on the What's New page – to access it, you now have to go to one of the interior pages, but the link is http://www.keithemerson.com/whatsnew.html Nothing new this month on Carl's site, but you can monitor additions to the tour and drum clinic list at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: Graham Telfer [mailto:Graham@wbay74.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 4:18 PM To: ELP-Digest@reluctant.com Subject: K Emerson live at the stables Hello John Radio 2's Live at the Stables began Monday 25 February 2002 at 9.00 pm UK time and is on for the next 5 weeks. You may have received this already, however if not, here's some cut and pasted info from eye witnesses to Keith's concert January 8, 2002 with Cleo Laine and John Dankworth: From: David Bentley Date: Thu Jan 10, 2002 3:12am To: ELP-disc Subject: Review of Keith at The Stables Well, one and all what a night we had! The gig itself was being recorded by (amongst others ;-) ) the BBC for a forthcoming Radio 2 series called 'Live from the Stables'. It starts 9.00 pm GMT Monday February the 25th and runs for 6 weeks. We don't actually know which programme will be on, but we suspect it will be the last one. The format was Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine and their Big Band with five guest artists, including Cerys Mathews from Catatonia (had that hit 'Baby it's Cold Outside' with Tom Jones) Keith's spot was towards the end of the evening. He was introduced as 'founder' of that legendary group - ELP and Cleo also mentioned the time that Keith went to their house to record a TV programme back in '72, and how he turned up with a truck to carry his Moog Modular. The first number he played was Honky Tonk Train Blues (NOT Fanfare, Bobby, but close!) with the Big Band and was exactly as expected, apart from the fact that the piano was not miked up as far as the PA was concerned. Mr. Dankworth then asked Keith to introduce the next number, because it was going to be 'such a contrast' to the previous one, and thus needed some explanation. Keith, approaching the mic, commented that it was a piece he wrote for ELP in 1972 (his memory seems to be failing...;-) and described it as a 'programatic piece', but reckoned some of the band might refer to it as a 'problematic' piece! It was SO problematic that we were informed that it required TWO conductors (Mr. Dankworth and the arranger of the Big Band score – James Pearson) The piece was called Lumpy Hoedown...... errr? What was it Dave?!? Oh YES! it was none other than, than...... wait for it..... a BIG BAND version of TARKUS. And it was really incredible. The 'build up' vocal effect of the original was reproduced using a crescendo effect of the horn section and then Keith and the band went straight in to Eruption, but again the piano seemed to be drowned out by the rest of the band, apart from the solos. Eruption merged into Stones of Years with flutes and brass, and Johnny Dankworth playing Gregs vocal line on Sax. This is where the second conductor was needed. During this section Keith went into a blistering Jazz piano solo, and you'll be pleased to hear - (Bobby!) - that he can play the piano. Sorry! that he can STILL play the piano, and very well too, and his problem of curled fingers 4 and 5 whilst playing, seems to be no longer apparent. All in all, a very memorable night. And Tarkus can now be seen in a whole new light ... as a contemporary Jazz extravaganza! After his performance was over, we went to the bar area and I (Tom) sent a message to Keith via one of the venue staff and pretty soon the Maestro appeared. He looked very fit, tanned and healthy and was very willing to chat, albeit for a short time because he had a train to catch. We learned that James Pearson had only FOUR days to orchestrate TARKUS for the big band, and they rehearsed this performance for the first time the afternoon before the gig. This makes it all even more incredible, as even though some of the performance was slightly 'unpolished' here and there, people who didn't know the music, would never have known. Ian Aspin had a chat with Keith about his wishes to involve him in his documentary on the Hammond. Keith promised to do his best to help. This got me thinking. Emerson is a classical genius and yet he writes so little classical music. Why redo Tarkus? Why not write a symphony? That is the standard (fairly or unfairly) by which the greats are judged. Why not a ballet, an opera or the like? Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky wrote some whaling ballet music. Really heavy duty stuff like ELP. Or is ELP like them? Anyway, I hope Emerson starts writing lots more music, one piano concerto every 23 years is not where it's at. In the end though, it was, is and always will be Keith Emerson that made ELP special. You can take away the vocals and percussion and still have ELP but without the keys what would ELP sound like? Hence next year the Jury will consider not entering a major moving and refurnishing project just before Christmas. So to business, beatitudes and bickerings. Even if not all High Hopes came to pass in the first year of the new Millennium, 2001 broke all and any ELP release related record by a wide margin. It will be hard to beat a complete set of ELP re-releases, 15 CD's of Official Bootlegs, 1x2CD ELP "best of" compilation and 1x2CD Carl Palmer Anthology, not to mention unreleased Nice material, Noddy's Puncture's tribute CD and more re-releases of Keith's film music. All in all this implies around 35 E.L and P. related CD's. Though by "hard" I don't mean impossible. So to all concerned: Let's strive to beat this record in 2002! According to Carl, there are still wonders waiting in the vaults, e.g. quadrophonic tapes of several ELP concerts. Together with more bootlegs, 40 should not be too hard a number to reach. Then the Categories: Category 1: "ELP related CD's". The nominees are 1: "Do ya wanna Play, Carl?" The Carl Palmer Anthology containing both his percussion Concerto, as well as lots of more solo, ELP, Craig, Chant, Chris Farlowe, Atomic Rooster, Mike Oldfield, Asia, 3 and Buddy Rich big band stuff. 2: "The Original Bootleg Series Vol 1" 3: "The Original Bootleg Series Vol 2" 4: "LA CHIESA". An Italian reissue of the original soundtrack of 'The Church' includes three tracks written by Fabio Pignatelli and performed by Goblin, and J. S. Bach's prelude n. 24, arranged and played by Emerson himself. 5: "Murderock" with 4 previously unreleased tracks. 6: The Tribute CD "Warts and All" by Noddy's Puncture. 7: "Den fagraste Rosa" by Bukkene Bruse, a Norwegian Traditional Folk Oriented Christmas Album containing Bjorn Ole Rasch's wonderfull arrangement of "Third Impression". Though a broad range of strong nominees the jury arrived fairly fast at a final decision. Pack-tarrratarrratttttartrtrrathttt-shittarrara- gong-gong-GONG and its "Do ya wanna Play, Carl?"! Any twenty five (though preferable less) years unreleased concerto from any of the boys will win almost by default. Category 2 - "ELP related DVD's". As just one was released this year, the nominee and the winner mixes in a higher unity with (fah-fah-fah-faaaaaaaaaaah) "Live at the Royal Albert Hall", though an appalling avoidance of extra material, voiceovers and Director's Cuts. Category 3: ELP related books of 2001 Unfortunately no nominees this year, though fortunately Ed Macan has promised again to take up the challenge, due, no doubt, to the Jury's roaring remarks about his non-participation last year. Category 4: ELP Web Sites There was a slight increase in the official ELP Web Ring Counting, from 27 to 28, so a least the declining tendency seems to have stopped. One reason may be that both L and P toured rather actively last year, and the in the usual ELP fashion Grand and Overwhelming Amount of releases. Let's turn to the candidates, which are the usual suspects and a promising newcomer: 1: Bobby Simmons (http://www.villagenet.com/~boo) 2: Impressions (http://www.interx.net/~jgreen/impressions.html) 3: ELP Digest (http://www.brain-salad.com/) 4: ELP Official Site (http://www.emersonlakepalmer.com/elp2.html) 5: Greg Lake's Official Site (http://www.greglake.com/) 6: Carl Palmer's Official Site (http://www.carlpalmer.com/palmer.html) 7: Ladies of the Lake (http://valseven.tripod.com/LadiesoftheLake.htm) This time it was far from an easy decision. However, after long deliberations and far too little bribes, the Jury arrived at the winner (Wah-wah-wah-waaaah): Greg Lake's Official Site! This was really Greg's year as he both had a great tour with Ringo and the fansite "Ladies of the Lake" came a close second, their site even voted "Classic Rock Site of the Week" for Jan. 28-Feb. 3, 2002 ! However, compared to Greg's webmaster's work on design, content and communication, even the Maidens of the Moist Medium had to throw in their towels. Category 5: ELP Mailing lists Again it was an interesting time for ELP communities all over the Web (which is world wide, according to rumours) and we have a great list of nominees: 1: Portabello Towne-The Emerson Lake and Palmer Discussion (once again a no functional link as this is written) 2: ELP-DISC (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ELP-DISC/) 3: ELP Digest (http://www.brain-salad.com/) 4: The Yahoo "ELP The show never ends" (http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/elptheshowneverends) And – woh-wor-worl-whide-wheb - the winner third years in a row is ELP DISC! If this continues any longer we'll have to make a Mailing List Hall of Fame which means that those there no longer will be eligible. So hats off to ELP DISC, this impressively growing community of more than 400 waving, weird, wild, warm and wise participants. Category 6: ELP related magazines As we predicted on the previous Jury meeting, Impressions (toing-toing- toing-toioioioing) did make a final stand before going the way of the band it celebrates - to a glorious memory, truly missed by many a fan, though the back catalogue remain. This means the category is wide open for any takers – get going gals and girls! Category 7: Most Memorable Moment Also this year had its major moments: 1: Greg playing with Ringo! 2: The Tribute Tours to Chiddingly, from e.g. Norway, Spain and Germany, not to mention England. 3: Noddy's Puncture's Six Bells Tribute Concert As emphazised last year the MMM will not necessarrily be picked for musical milestones, though it may sometimes count in a positive way. Like the rest of our postpunk culture, The Jury here will focus on emotions, image, thrills and shocks (and the occasional supersonic fighting cock). So Ringo and Greg, despite the emotions, the winner this years was an even more related nostalgia, namely (blow-bla-bla- blast) the more than occasional supersonic Noddy's Puncture's Six Bells Tribute Concert, complete with a supersonic flying cock (or was it a chicken?)! What a memorable occasion! What memorable picture of Keith playing cricket! What memorable meeting of fans! What memorable battle of best T-shirt! What memorable pictures of an air guitar! What memorable playing of air keys! And, if the Jury remember correctly, what memorable memory removing fluids! Category 8: Highest Hopes for next year This time the hopes are even more grounded in reality than previous years'. Category 8a) The PROMISED Ones (so get them out, lads!): * Keith's Second Piano Concerto * "Emerson Plays Emerson", March 2002 * The ELP book by Ed Macan 8b) The Probable Ones * Greg's solo album * Keith's Retrospective * "Working Live", a live record by the band "Palmer" * Offical Live releases from the 1970's, in Dolby Surround, based on Quadrophenic tapes Category 8c) The Possible Infinite (and Unpardonably) Postponed Ones * The 2CD with Key King Keith and Wonderwizard Wakeman! * The live CD of Keith with Mark Bonilla, Glen Hughes and some Dragons from the 1990's (a long time ago). * Keith's autobiography with a CD of surprising stuff * A California Jam DVD In category 8a the winner is once again the no brainer - pi-pi-a-a-no- Keith's Second Piano Concerto! In category 8b the winner was harder to find, but (retroh-woiuuunngh- retroh-wheueiueep-retrohhh) Keith's Retrospective! In category 8c the winner once again must be (though the same hard competition) - fahn-fahn-fahre - Keith's autobiography with a CD of surprising stuff! Overall winner in category 8 is of course the perennial and proverbial WHATEVER, as long as it is new or unreleased. Though the Jury wouldn't particularly mind if it was No Waste of Talent or Electricity. Well, I've finally received my copy of the Manticore Bootleg sets, had a bit of time to check 'em out...and here comes yet another unsolicited "review"! To describe these gems as "Diamonds in the Rough" would be THE masterpiece of understatement. It's hard to imagine Messrs. E, L & P having put their sanction on the release of such poor quality recordings...the exception being, in my humble opinion, two notable shows: New Haven ( from Vol. 2 ), and Long Beach ( Vol. 1 ). Hearing the New Haven recording is almost worth the price of admission for volume two alone. It's a treat to hear the band (s ans orchestra ) in this manner---a direct board recording of a major artist is a rare find indeed ( versus an 'audience' bootleg ). Someone earlier had described the sound of this one as "compressed"--- actually, as any musician would agree, New Haven is pretty typical of what a board line feed yields...that "sterile", unnatural sound. I was pleasantly surprised, too, with the occasional stereo panning. I do remember seeing ELP about a month prior to the New Haven date ( Oct '77; Mobile, Al! ), and I distinctly remember Palmer's tympani drums panned left and right through the PA speakers for the intro to "Fanfare", exactly as they're panned on the New Haven CD. By the way, this old timer got a close-up look at ELP's mixing board used during the '77 Works Tour: Sixty (!) channels, with almost half of them labeled for drums! If I'd only had a blank cassette tape and a portrait of, say, Grant or Franklin to offer that sound engineer....sigh. One thing weird about the New Haven recording, though: Palmer's bass drum is panned to one side! Assuming this set is the exact feed of what went through the PA speakers (minus tape hiss! ), the audience on one side of that venue didn't hear much bass drum...well, they got over it, I'm sure... Long Beach, now: For a 1972 bootleg, this recording is remarkably clear and consistent! Good definition on the drums, keyboards, etc. Palmer's blistering solo during "Rondo" sounds almost as good as the classic solo on WBMFTTSTNE. The Buffalo portion of these sets may well be a legendary performance to obtain, but IMHO its sound quality utterly pales in comparison to Long Beach. I'm rather surprised they didn't include the Colefield, MD and/or Madison Square Garden Works shows in these sets. Colefield in particular, for an ambient 'audience' recording, is pretty decent quality for a 1977 bootleg. There's definitely something to be said for hearing the thunderous booming of Palmer's bass drum ricocheting off the walls; the spontaneous cheering of the crowd as he's tossing sticks during the "Tank" solo, stripping the T-shirt off, raising the gong mallets, etc ( interestingly, none of this interaction is heard on the New Haven CDs, or, even more ironically, the official Works Live release, as most of it was culled from 2-track tapes made at the board! ). Both the Colefield and MSG concerts are complete Works '77 shows ( one wonders what happened to "Pictures" and "Tank/Enemy God" from New Haven ). I mean, a real bootleg has Greg Lake pausing in the middle of "Lucky Man" to admonish someone for setting off a firecracker (!) This is pure nostalgia for anyone who attended concerts back during the Dim Dark Seventies. But back to the Manticore Boots: These recordings are supposed to be from "The Manticore Vaults"? Gimme a break! These efforts, crude as they are, exist because of a few stalwart sound techs who openly---or covertly---recorded the shows back when it would have been virtually impossible to have smuggled a cassette deck or, more likely, an open reel machine, past security guards---trust me; I went to enough of those concerts! The other thing about these sets that baffles me: for a band so supposedly upset over the proliferation of inferior, illegal bootlegs...what gives, guys?! Greg Lake, in response to a question at his web site, said: "...ELP has too many live albums out; after a while it is the same songs over and over..." Huh? Eight versions of Tarkus, KE9, Take a Pebble, etc ( and bad recordings at that! ). Moi is still scratching his head, folks. I'm not complaining too vigorously...just more than a bit puzzled. Know what I think is still languishing in those vaults? 16-track tapes of the 1972 Mar y Sol performance; 24-track tapes from the 1977 Wheeling, West Va. Works concert ( a bit of which was used for the Works Live album--listen to the quality of Peter Gunn, Tiger in a Spotlight, Enemy God ). And what of the remainder of the legendary Newcastle City Hall performance, from which the classic "Pictures" album was made? The rest of the Lyceum show? I'd bet good money, too, that there's still at least one multitrack tape sitting around of the encore version of "Pictures" from the '74 BSS tour... methinks we've been had! And on that note, a theory: Perhaps the release of "From the Manticore Vaults" is ELPs sweet "revenge" on all of us who've illegally owned 'real' bootleg recordings over the past two-plus decades...and this is their way of cashing in (!) I think the "good stuff" is yet to come... --------------------------------------------- From: Matt Hebert [matt_knox74@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 3:45 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: If you're into adventurous ELP-inspired guitar playing click here... ...to check out my debut all original-all instrumental guitar CD 'CONTROL FREAK'!!!! www.matt-hebert.com Thank you for allowing the shameless self promotion!! -Matt --------------------------------------------- From: lawrence moseley [moseleylawrence@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2002 9:38 AM To: ELP-Digest@reluctant.com Subject: Live At The Isle Of Wight I had no idea this was now released. I've enjoyed finding older entries and want to be current. I have a question that I wish you would publish. That is, if you don't know the answer yourself and it hasn't already been discussed. There's a minute of ELP in the Isle of Wight movie. They're shooting off canons and stabbing organs and there's amazing footage of Keith jamming intervals backwards over the organ. This festival sucked. People walked off stage, the crowds rioting, Joni Mitchell practically in tears, even Jimi was nodding off. The end of the free festival era, except ELP was smoking. The crowd was more into their set than anyone elses. So, my question is, Was the whole set captured on tape? Will I ever get to see it? In the last Digest, David Carswell asked about the Touch and Go riff. The Touch and Go intro line (and the riff that continues throughout the tune) is actually lifted from Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on Greensleeves" from his opera "Sir John in Love". The Greensleeves tune bookends the piece's central episode which is the Touch and Go riff. It is also, to my knowledge, originally an English folk tune that VW copped. The VW version is, if I recall, in F# minor - Keith has dropped it into the much more accessible C minor! Cheers, Andrew Andrew L. Both songs are derived from an English folksong titled "Lovely Joan". Ralph Vaughan Williams also quotes "Lovely Joan" in "Fantasia on Greensleeves". I'm not sure if Emerson is quoting the folksong or RVW. I believe both sources are already in the quote list. I was quite surprised (now where have I heard this tune before? Hmm...). The sheet music for the violin piece indicated in small print that this was an old folk tune known as "Lovely Joan". I've never looked at the musical quotes list, but I'd bet this is listed. It seems that neither Blackmore quoted Emerson, nor our Keith quoted Blackmore. In fact in a vinyl record titled "Whatever" (Hannibal Records, 1987) by Danny Thompson - a very fine double bass player, in some performances also with David Sylvian - there is a track called "Lovely Joan", in which you can listen to the very same music line you can find in "Touch & Go" and in "The Spirit Flies Free". But you may also unveil the mystery by reading in the sleeve notes that this song is "arranged traditional material". So the source was for all of them a traditional song (I don't know if it's actually titled "Lovely Joan"). But this kind of joyful quoting is also one of the reason I love ELP: the (boring) borders among musical genres are destroyed, the freedom of playing what is GOOD music in a exciting melting pot reaches with them one of its peak. A great CIAO from Italy to all of you! Marcello Marinucci P.S.: A praise for Keith, Greg, Carl: please don't forget Italy in your non-ELP touring or distributing new records, because ELP italian fans have never forgotten you... --------------------------------------------- From: mds@existentialist.co.uk Sent: Friday, February 01, 2002 9:07 AM To: elp-digest-web@reluctant.com Subject: In The Hot Seat Hi there, I'm trying to get hold of a copy of In The Hot Seat, but can't seem to find it on Amazon UK, nor on the ELP official site.
