Second, a reminder that Keith Emerson's appearance on the BBC's Radio 2 "Live at the Stables" is Monday, March 25 at 9PM (GMT). For most of the ELP Digest reader's that's TODAY. There's some chance that there will be a streaming audio feed. So, perhaps, people outside the reach of Radio 2 will be able to tune in with the internet. As Scott Lindsey tells us (more below), see: There's also some news of up-comind shows by the Carl Palmer band (though in Italian so I've only included the parts that I could figure out as what appear to be concert dates), rumors of a Nice reunion. (Now that would be interesting!), and more about "Emerson Plays Emerson". - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .… The only news this issue comes from Carl’s site, including word of new concert dates in several countries including the UK, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There’s also “confirmation from Carl that the group will be releasing a new live album titled ‘Working Live.’” There’s even an artistic rendering of what appears to be the album cover! I just heard about the following from a major Japanese Record Shop, on "Keith Emerson plays Emerson": 1: Vagrant 2: Creole Dance 3: Solitudinous 4: Broken Bough 5: A Cajun Alley 6: Prelude to Candice 7: A Blade of Grass 8: Outgoing Tide 9: Summertime(jazz trio) 10: Interlude 11: Roll'n Jelly 12: B&W Blues (jazz trio) 13: For Kevin 14: The Dreamer 15: Hammer it out 16: Ballad for a common man 17: Barrelhouse Shakedown 18: Nilu's Dream 19: Soulscapes 20: Close to Home (live at the Albert Hall) 21: Medley (recorded when Keith was 14 years old!) 22: Honky Tonk Train Blues (w. Oscar Peterson) As we see this is a mixture of new stuff (about half of it), unreleased old materieal, rerecorded old gems and one rerelease (20). The Album is from "EMI-classics", and it seems Keith was trying to get a contract for his "Piano concerto #2", but EMI's condition was that he himself should prepare the orchestra and play a European tour on his own expense. Hence the contract was changed to a more ordinary album, and though I hope not, and know even less about it, this may perhaps imply that the Second Piano Concerto again is on hold? By my calculations that will be March 25, assuming the show doesn't deviate from its 9pm Monday slot. For those of us not in broadcast range of Radio 2, there's always streaming audio. They have two speeds of RealAudio streams. Unlike Radio 1 and 4, there's no Ogg Vorbis stream available. 9pm GMT is early afternoon for me, so I'll be listening. -- Scott Lindsey --------------------------------------------- [Editor's Note: I received the following email that was almost entirely in Italian. I've recently bought the Live at the Isle of Wight CD and find it fascinating to hear the band learning the songs that we are all note perfect on! and to hear Keith coming to terms with and not always winning, with the monster Moog. I think we should start a campaign to get ELP to forget all this rubbish about recording 3 minute songs - and go back to what they are best at - magnum opus' like KE9 & Tarkus - Black Moon was very good but I'd like to scrub the interim records from Works 1 & 2 & Love Beach on and ask for a worthy successor to KE9. I attended the Albert Hall concert in '92 but came away disappointed with the sound (too boomy). The '92 Newcastle City Hall show was fabulous in every respect. My first ELP concert was at the Empire Pool, Wembley in 1974 (In full quadraphonic). As big fans of ELP we have been waiting in Venezuela for a concert since many years ago. Not only my husband and I but a lot of fans than you have here in Venezuela, a country that you have forgotten in your tours. Of course we would like to see you live - it would be one of the biggest dreams for my husband, who is your fan since he was a child - but now I’m writing you because one of our friends - and a fan of yours, too - is an important musician and Conductor here in Caracas. A few days ago we were talking with him about Emerson’s Piano Concerto and the possibilities of playing it in Caracas at the Teresa Carreqo Theater. He told us that it’s important for him, first of all, that Emerson accept it and second, he needs the complete partiture. As we see, if we cannot have you all live here, at least it would be incredibly wonderful to listen to Emerson’s music live - and it is very possible to have the orchestra and the theater. Please answer me and tell me if it is possible or, at least, how can we get in touch with the person who can make this dream come true. I hope you can forgive my poor English - but I am a Spanish Grammar teacher- And thanks for listen to my request. Big kisses for these three beautiful men. I think the seed was planted in my head from a past digest that suggested Led Zepplin wanted Keith to play keyboards in Zep. Well, they also need a drummer now and who better than Carl Palmer. Since Greg doesn't care to play, Plant, Page and John Paul Jones would more than fill up the stage. Can we call it ZEP? Think it would work? I am submitting the following for possible inclusion in the ELP Digest... I recently collaborated with some other people on a 'film-music sync' project involving the classic film "Fantasia". We divided up the segments that comprise the movie and each of us had to 're-score' our individual section of the film with whatever music we wanted. It fell to me to re-tool the "Nutcracker Suite", and I did so using a combination of the 'live' and studio versions of the song "Take A Pebble" from ELP...I also threw in a bit of the opening from "Endless Enigma". Each of these segments are online, so if you have a high speed connection and the Real Player video program, you have a couple of different ways to check it out... Open up your Real Player program and click on 'file'...then click on 'open location'...in the space given type in the following address *exactly* as it appears... http://www.mikecasey.org/SharedFantasia/SharedFantasia_pt2_DaveBytor.rm This will open up the video and it will begin playing within a few seconds. The other option gives you the opportunity to simply download the video file to your computer and play it at your leisure...go to this website: http://www.digitalsyncs.com/public/ Once there you will see links to all of the Shared Fantasia segments. My ELP file is the second one on the list. You'll want to *right* click on the link and save it to your hard drive. The file size is about 24 MB. While it's difficult for me being the one who created this work to be fully objective, I'm very pleased with how it turned out...so naturally I want to share it with other likeminded folk. I hope you enjoy it! Peace, Dave Bytor P.S. I would also encourage you to check out the other segments as well. Some of the music used includes Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Metallica, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, etc. =========================== Questions (and Answers!) =========================== From: Peter Wilton Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2002 11:18 AM To: John Arnold Subject: Lovely Joan Re the "Lovely Joan" tune in "Touch and Go", Vaughan Williams was not just a composer, but also a collector who travelled round getting elderly country people to sing to him. He collected Lovely Joan himself in 1908 from someone called "C. Jay" at a place called Acle in Norfolk (East of England). He tended to incorporate various songs he had collected into his instrumental compositions (as in the case of quoting Lovely Joan in the Greensleeves Fantasia), as well as converting them into hymn tunes in the English Hymnal, which he edited in 1906. Lovely Joan, words and melody, were included in the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, which he co-edited with A. L. Lloyd, and which came out in 1958, the year Vaughan Williams died. It has been recorded a few times by folk singers. My recording is on the Saydisc label's CD Traditional Songs of England, sung by Jo Freya, who is an important performer on the English folk circuit today. The words are about a man who seduces Lovely Joan, but she outwits him, and steals his horse and his ring. -- Peter Wilton The Gregorian Association Web Page: http://www.beaufort.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------- From: Pstupar Sent: Friday, March 01, 2002 3:29 AM To: elp-digest-web Subject: Archivist @ work...greetings from SF, Ca...
