A number of dates/places for concerts by The Nice have been rolling in. Thanks to all of you who took the time to keep us all informed. Now, if only I could figure out how to justify going to England or Scotland in early October. Hmmmm... Also, there's word of a new "highly unofficial news site" where frequent contributor, Bjorn-Are Davidsen, organizes all of the information he picks up from various ELP discussion groups, etc. Definitely worth a look: http://home.online.no/~b-a-davi/.cfm We also received some reminiscences of an ELP roadie - actually, the logistics manager for the Works tour. Great stories that I'm glad were shared with us. And, finally, even more action on The Nice front. We've received news that Martyn Hanson's new book about the Nice is available for pre-ordering and will be out soon. Talk about good timing! When I first heard about the book, I'd never have imagined that The Nice would be touring at the time the book was released! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... Late Summer doldrums - the only news on an official site this month is on Carl's site, with updates on the unveiling of his new drum kit in L.A. and Frankfurt, Germany as well as some tour news - check it out at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html Watch for Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band on pay-per-view - the Time Warner system and DirecTVoffered it in August and it could return and/or appear on other systems later (let's hope!). It's the same Chicago, Illinois show that is featured on the CD (see the review under Reader Commentary) and the only Greg tune is "Lucky Man," but it's a fun show and Greg is in great voice! :) =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: stefano tirelli [s.tirelli@studio-target.it] Sent: Tuesday, August 06, 2002 1:02 PM To: ELP-Digest@reluctant.com Subject: Italian ELP Tribute live I would like to share my emotions with you about the concert that I saw yesternight at MODENA Cortili with the italian EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER TRIBUTE. Usually I don't like very much tribute bands (and I play in a tribute band too!!!), but this great italian band really made my day. They played at Cortili in Modena. Modena is a medium size town (by Italian standard) in the south of North Italy. Cortili was the place and I think I can translate it with "Modena Gardens". It's in fact a nice outdoor place in the very historic old center of Modena...old walls and old trees surronds it, so it was a very appropriate place for the Great Music of ELP. The band line up is: Gianluca Tagliavini on keyboards, Oscar Abelli on drums and Fausto Carcione on vocals/bass/guitar. They played with an excellent "savoir faire" and I think it was the best band I saw in a long long time. Gianluca Tagliavini is the keyboards player who usually plays with Carl Palmer when the latter comes to play in Italy. Gianluca's ability is really breathtaking and his love for the music of ELP his tangible. He is without a doubt the italian ultimate keyboards wizard! Oscar Abelli is a well know blues drummer here in my area but I was amazed to discover how well his style can endorse also the style of Carl Palmer. He made a hell of a performance plus his witty attitude was a show in the show. Fausto Carcione is a guy who can sing very very well and he can also play his Rickenbecker bass in a good way. He was a real surprise since I already knew Tagliavini and Abelli. They started with Karn Evil part 2 and they ended the show with Fanfare. In between them they played Tarkus, Bitches Cristal, Tank, Lucky Man, Take a pebble, Benny the Bouncer, Jerusalem and probably something more that now I forget. Then the link they made between Jeremy Bender and The Sheriff was simply fantastic. I had thrills down my spine mostly all night and I'm not a teenager who can get excited easily. It was good to see that many people went to see the concert and that the ELP music is now still considered. The italian EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER tribute are contantly in tour here in italy, don't miss their show! They rule! Thanks you guys for an electric magic great night. Elp on. I've just been through all 5 cd's on the new ELP boots box 3 and can safely report that there's some pretty bad and VERY good news, lets start with the bad first: Firstly I firmly believe that Sanctuary/Castle Music need to be addressed on the following point (the more folks that say something the better): I pop in Disc 1 recorded at Anaheim Convention Centre/Wheeling Colosseum and instantly recognise the MC shouting "welcome back my friends to the show that never ends ladies and gentlemen Emerson, Lake & Pallmerrr" exactly the person/same intro as the famous Live album from '74, Hoedown starts, this sounds too similar for me and on further listening there's no doubt about it whatsoever it's EXACTLY the version from "Welcome Back". The mix is slightly different and the stereo spread is wider, good recording. There's a switch to Wheeler for Tiger in a spotlight & C'est la Vie then Back to Anaheim for the same versions of Still..& lucky man (person in crowd shouts at the same spot at the end of Lucky Man), lousy recording tape dropouts all over the place, same story with Karn 1st Imp. Its the one from Welcome Back....left side falling over occasionally, back at Wheeler "Fanfare" is cool. Pictures is an audience recording for sure, Anaheim perhaps, the intro is done on a pipe organ, either prerecorded or the venue has a pipe organ (no GX1 on this version). I'll get to the point: why are Sanctuary selling us IDENTICAL versions of tracks available on other Albums but with inferior crappy bootleg style recordings (bar the Wheeler gig), who needs this?? To make this point even worse the Albert Hall Gig (2discs) is a note for note replica of the 92 Album of the same name sporting an inferior recording (MONO no less not an audience recording though, possibly a radio broadcast), same wrong notes in the second synth phrase in ERUPTION as on Albert Hall album. The label says "Tarkus: Eruption/Stones of years/Iconoclast/Mass/Manticore/Battlefield/ Aquatarkus", no such luck, right after Iconoclast there's the familiar swirl and right into knife edge. However we do get the complete show including "Pictures, Close To Home, Honky Tonk, From The Beginning". There should at least be a label on the box claiming previously released material, this feels like a con. SOME GOOD NEWS: The March 93 recording at the Wiltern Theatre has to be THE best new ELP recording ever made, similar set to Albert Hall but FAR better recording than the ORIGINAL '92 Albert Hall recording. The band are 8 months more honed than in London and it shows. The version of Tarkus is the most spirited I've ever heard since the "Welcome Back" version, WONDERFUL synth solo in Stones of Years. We get Close to Home & Creole Dance both killer with expansions in "Creole". Cest La Vie is BETTER than the original complete with Emerson accordion solo and string accomp. excellent! Lucky man surpasses the Albert Hall version, better guitar style keyboard parts and a great version of touch & go. A special note must be made about the recording quality, believe me this is no boot style recording, it has that same crowd ambience as Welcome back, huge sounds like you're in the middle of the arena. Such a similar feel and sound to "Welcome Back" its almost like de ja vu (people shriek in Lucky Man in almost the same spot as '74)! Like a modern version of the '74 album! So is it worth it? For the Wiltern gig most certainly!! But someone has to answer to the aforementioned problems, We shouldn't be scammed like this. His rather acid comment got me thinking about what would have happened if Mr Lake had stayed? Probably nothing, what a contrast to another three piece band called Rush who are also fantastic players but with one small difference, they are all freinds which bears witness in their music, all 17 albums worth. Especially thier latest CD Vapour Trails which showcases a band which plays contemporary progressive rock and whose fans are not stuck in 1973. Before I receive a bashing let me say I love ELP but it's a real shame they could not get on. So what have we got left? I have attended 3 Palmer gigs which are identical with some new material which quite honestly is rather ordinary. A Greg Lake project which has yet to materialise and a reasonable CD by Mr Emerson who has decided to reform the Nice. Well excuse me while I book my Rush ticket. Hi, My name is Richard Gauthier. In December 1976 when ELP came to Montreal to rehearse their 1977/78 Work tour I was hired to handle the transportation logistics for the tour. We ended up with thirteen 45-ft. truckloads of equipment just for three people. Unbelievable. In addition of the British crew, the technical crew (sound by Audio Analyst, lighting, stage hands and others) all came from Montreal. Ted Thrasher, the road manager, was from Toronto. Here are some memories from that tour. The very first rehearsal was at the Olympic stadium in the middle of winter (in the month of December). At that time the stadium had no roof. You can imagine how ELP felt dressed up in their winter clothes. Then the group moved on in a small hockey arena that they rented for two months (March-April 1977). After rehearsing the show for two months it was our turn to rehearse the loading and the unloading of the trucks. It took us a day and half to get everything o.k including tons of paper work for U.S./Canada customs. Before hitting the road, we had a party at my house. About 50 persons came. It was fun to see the Quebec French crew with the British one exchanging their experiences. When the first part of the tour ended in Montreal, more 75,000 fans packed the Olympic Stadium (back where it all started). Then we started all over again on February 13 and 14 with two gigs at the old Molson Center. When we left the Molson center at two am for the next show in Kitchener, Ontario there was not a flake of snow on the ground. Three hours later came a heavy snow storm. The airport was closed, the 13 trucks were underway to Kitchener and here we were stuck in Montreal, the crew and ELP. The show must go on. We phoned the railway company, rented two cars and off we went. We arrived in Toronto at 20:00. We then took two buses to Kitchener. The take-in started at 22:00 (the show was supposed to start at 20:00) and the show 3 hours later. But that was not the end. That storm followed us for days and nights until we reached St. Louis. The guys were falling sick like flies. But the show must go on. And the show did go on. None of the shows where canceled as I recall including one truckload burned to the ground on a U.S. highway. I can tell you that ELP was and still is the greatest group I have ever worked for (their music and the entire organisation) and I have worked for many of them starting in 1967 with the Loving Spoonful, to Lover Boys, Gino Vanelli, Frank Marino and Mahagony Rush, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, The Montreal Symphony Orchestra and others. Now at 62, I have decided to retire as a professional working for the Quebec Government. I still have two t-shirts from that tour. However, my black silk jacket had "disappeared" when we were loading in St. Louis. If anyone found it, you can send it back to me at the following address: Richard Gauthier 11963 Boul. Lacordaire Montreal (Quebec) H1G,4K9. Well, I hope that some of my memories will bring all of you some of yours back about the crew, the city of Montreal and all the good and bad time that we shared together during the 1977/78 Work Tour. Hoping someday that you will all come back my friends to the show that never ends, that some Lucky Man will hear his Fanfare for the Common Man, the Planets will spin forever, Peter Gunn will be walking the plank on a Pirate ship and we will all end up with our Pictures at an Exhibition. Hoping to hear from you . --------------------------------------------- From: Mark Bustamante [marktv3@earthlink.net] Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 11:07 PM To: elp-digest-web@reluctant.com Subject: ELP Memories August 30, 1998 was the last time myself, or anyone attended an ELP concert. I have great memories from the last two shows from that tour, not knowing then it would be their last ever. From what I recall, Greg Lake wanted to head in a new musical direction; namely to do very little. Of course, there was the Ringo Starr tour where he played his most popular songs, then back to obscurity. This summer of 2002, I will attend or have already attended many of my favorite classic bands: The Who, Paul McCartney, Springsteen, Deep Purple, Dio, and others. An ELP tour would have only added to a great year. However, this is not to be as we all know. I have stopped checking the official web site as waiting four years for an appearance, outside Ringo, by any of them in Los Angeles is enough. A friend tells me a new Greg Lake web site will be launched with new info and news on upcoming music. I am sorry, but I seriously doubt the world has been waiting to hear new Greg Lake music. There is just too much happening out there for most people to stop and ask, "So, what is Greg Lake up to?" I am not trying to offend anyone out there, I guess I am bitter because such great talent and music ended not from disaster, but because of lost passion. Thanks for the memories and goodbye. You must believe in the human race Can you believe God makes you breathe Why did he lose Six million Jews? Touched by the wings Fear's angel brings Sad winter storm Grey autumn dawn Who looks on life itself Who lights your way? Only you can say How can you just obey? Don't need the word Now that you've heard Don't be afraid Man is man-made And when the hour comes Don't turn away Face the light of day And do it your way It's the only way ] --------------------------------------------- From: S. In particular, SCD-4 in Ensoniq ASR format, and another in AKAI S1000 format. If anyone wants to sell a copy of either of these, or knows of other similar items, I am interested.
