Happy Birthday, Greg! We're still waiting for final word on the release of Greg's new web site. I've been able to take a peek at it and can tell you that there's a lot of good stuff there. A pretty extensive set of fan questions and answers from Greg (see a sneak peek below), a photo gallery of Greg's guitars, and some insight into Greg's current projects. Can't wait for it to be released to the world. In other news, Carl has teamed up with Frank Askew to create "Drum Clinics UK". It sounds pretty exciting. I've also remembered to delve into the Pete Sinfield web site. It's a great site and is a definitive source for all of the ELP lyrics that Pete worked on. In response to last issue's question about a complete ELP discography, a reader has sent me an update of his. I've converted it to PDF and uploaded it to the www.brain-salad.com web site for all to share. Thanks, Clive! Also, there's a new Asia box set of live shows that will be of interest to Carl Palmer and Asia fans. (And it seems to include a show that I attended!) For the details, you'll have to read on... - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... News again from Carl's site! Why is the audio on this vid so bad - or is it just my copy? Laurie [ Editor's Note: I recall that my copy also had problems with the sound dropping in and out of HiFi mode quite a bit. I never really found out about the source of this. However, I do recall reading in various interviews in the years after the 77 tour that there were problems with the primary multi-track audio recorders at that concert and that the "In Concert" CD had to be pulled/remixed from an alternate 2-track (or many fewer tracks than the 24-tracks they had tried to capture). - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: Naegellen, Chris E [chris.naegellen@eds.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 1:55 PM To: 'elp-digest@reluctant.com' Subject: ELP New Music Not Likely [Editor's Note: This question/answer is from Greg's not-quite-yet-released, new web site. We'll have more details about the new web site when it's officially launched. - John - ] Question: "Hi Greg, You were great in Ringo's show last year! On Carl Palmer's website he says "...I would still like to accomplish that great Emerson, Lake & Palmer album that I know we have still yet to make." I know you're working on a solo album, and that you have said that you would consider touring with ELP again. I'm hoping you can patch things up with Keith and Carl and do it for the music, as that was obviously the inspiration for ELP all along. How about Works, Volume 3? Well, I can dream, can't I? Chris Naegellen, Lafayette, CO" Answer: "Dear Chris, Regarding E L P and a new album. Who knows, perhaps one should never say never. I really do have very fond memories of some great times playing with E L P. It was an extraordinary band. However, the beauty of some things, is that they happen in a particular way and at a particular moment in time and because they cannot be easily duplicated become unique and special. For me, both the music of E L P and for that matter the music of King Crimson fall into that category. It isn't just a question of the three guys getting back together for old times sake. So many factors went in to making those early albums as creatively successful as they were. I'm not honestly sure, even with the good will of all those concerned, if the same degree of innovative creativity could be replicated in the same way today. Onward and Upward, Many Thanks, Greg Lake, August 2002." --------------------------------------------- From: Clive ffitch [mailto:ffitch@clara.co.uk] Sent: Friday, November 08, 2002 10:35 AM To: elp-digest-web@reluctant.com Subject: Re ELP Discography John, Re: the letter in the latest Digest I only have the much updated (more info, less errors!) to the one I sent before. Not to the extent of ALL vinyl refs, but it does have the main ones! The best I have seen is at the back of the book "The Show That Never Ends". Also a titles checklist of official albums/CDs. After sending out the last Digest (with lyrics to the first part of Memoirs of an Officer and Gentleman), I noticed that Pete Sinfield's eb site has most, if not all, of his lyrics (for ELP and his other work) on it. So, we might as well go straight to the horse's mouth (poet's keystrokes?) for these kinds of questions: Pete Sinfield's web site: http://www.songsouponsea.com Pete Sinfield's lyrics page: http://www.songsouponsea.com/Promenade/lyrics/lyrics.html Most of the ELP-related work is on the 1968-74 page or the 1975-81 page. I've added this link to the ELP Digest "lyrics" page so we won't forget about this valuable resource in the future. It's a great site with a lot of interesting information on it. - John - --------------------------------------------- From: BTripodi@aol.com Sent: Saturday, November 02, 2002 10:44 PM To: arnold@reluctant.com Subject: Re: Genesis reunion? [ Editor's Note: I noticed that Phil Collins has a new album out (or due out soon) but haven't heard anything else about a Genesis reunion. Do any other readers have any details about this? - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: Sean Matthews [seanmatt@enoreo.on.ca] Sent: Wednesday, November 06, 2002 8:36 PM To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Brit. Rock '66 and response to Prof. Abramo Prof. Antonio Abramo asked in the previous issue about scores and synth's. First of all, I'm sure there are loads of folks out there with music books they could recommend. I have the one with the black cover, copyright Manticore 1977 and figure, after several years of piano training, I could tackle a good portion of it. (By the way, If anyone knows where to get the frustratingly absent "Fugue" from Endless Enigma, I'd be more than happy). But the piece I'm currently trying to hammer through is "Eruption" from Tarkus. It was very truthfully transcribed, from what I can tell, in the June 1992 edition of Keyboard Magazine. If you want a challenge, I'd highly recommend trying that one. Has anyone out there been able to master it?---Up to time?! With regards to the Moog synth, I have what I find makes a pretty good equivalent, in my Roland Jupiter 6. This early generation MIDI synth (around 1982-4?) has this neat feature called "Unison" which, when you play a single note, takes all of the synth's available oscillators and blasts them out on that one note. The waveform adjustments are similar to the Moog as well. So, put it on square waveform, adjust the filters a bit, throw on some portamento, and you've got the "Lucky Man" solo, like nobody's business. The nice thing about the J6 is that, being MIDI, you can do a lot more with it than a standard Moog -- as far as I know. Also, I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who's heard of a film called "British Rock '66". I saw this film at a repertoir cinema in Toronto about 15 years ago. It had live sets by the Moody Blues, Humble Pie and others, and then this sort of studio set by Keith Emerson and the Nice -- a good 20-30 minutes' worth. I'd love to see it again. I wish it was, however, even better, it was my friends "Ann and Bjorn" (Annbjorg Lien and Bjorn Ole Rasch), two great Norwegian musicians and friends of Keith, who got the Karelia Suite dedicated to them. Please check out their folk music oriented fiddle/keyboards/guitar albums "Baba Yaga" and "Alien Alive", as well as "The Loveliest Rose" with the band Bukkene Bruse, available e.g. at http://www.noside.com/. For those into Tolkien, Bjorn Ole is also about to release an album based on his music to the Hobbit Ballet, from 1984 - http://home.hia.no/~bjornor/. BTW, The Nice concert at RFH was really a marvellous experience, it was especially good to see how much Keith and the others seemed to be enjoying themselves! Great to hear there is going to be a live album from the tour!
