As I thought the program would start at 3:00, I was listening to TotalRock for one hour before Emo's Memos. I listened to Night Ranger, "Free Bird," some heavy metal bands, etc during that one hour. The hour ended with an old Crimson's tune, and Emo's Memos finally started with "Runaway Train" -- my 4-year old son referred it as Sponge Bob music. He was right, a kind of music that you could hear in Sponge Bob. After one hour of metal and rock music, what a way to start the program! I just laughed -- only Keith Emerson could do that! In the first week, he basically played the music that he grew up with, his best Jazz vocalist, funny jazz music, and his old neighbor, Jeff Beck. I did not realise that Keith Emerson had such a wonderful voice! He sang "Twisted" a bit, and too bad he has not thought about vocalist career!!!! His comments were so clever and funny, and very very enjoyable 30 minutes. The quality isn't exceptional, but is no different from the VHS version, which I also have. I believe that the band never felt that the film was up to snuff which is why it was never released in the late 70's. My understanding is that it was pent up demand which led to its release later on through the ELP website. While it may not be absolutely crisp and clear, it still is a valuable reminder of what greatness there was when ELP was on top of its game. Take it from someone who was at that show... it brings back the magic of those days and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Besides, the Manticore Special alone is worth the price of the DVD. Keep up the good work. Is he too young to appreciate what "daddy" is playing? I discovered ELP when I was in Kindergarten. It was 1974 and BSS had just been released. My sister bought it for one song she heard on the radio (we know which one). I took over that album and I've been a dedicated fan ever since. My daughter is eight years old, and when I put on the "Royal Albert Hall" DVD she too is hooked. She finds it fascinating to watch Keith at work on the keys. She also is a big fan of "Tales From the Topographic Oceans" which surprises me since I didn't get into that until I was twelve! My kids aren't any different from others. I don't force them to read Shakespeare or listen to Mozart. They like what they like. They also watch Sponge Bob and all the other shows kids watch. My point is, this is simply excellent music that, while not for everyone, will stand the test of time and I feel that if it continues into the next generation, and the demand is there, it will remain viable. Until their last concert, ELP still had that magic. I was lucky to see them at The Chance, a club in Poughkeepsie NY right before Lake left, and while he was obviously not into it as much as Emerson and Palmer, they were still tight. Not all bands have that. I have a feeling that at some point, they will get back together again, and until then, we've got the CD's. Keep up the great work John and if you need any help, let us know! It would be a real loss if artistic differences or whatever get in the way of let's be optimistic here......say a new Emerson Lake & Palmer release early 2004--Indeed it was a devastating loss that the Beatles for example failed to reunite due to artistic differences and such. I envision a 5.1 music DVD audio and videos like fleetwood is about to release Gosh-The crap I called stereo in the 1970's has been replaced in my personal listening space with two bridged Harmon Kardon Amps delivering 100 high current watts to each of the systems four Infinity speakers and of course a powered subwoofer manufactured by Velydyne. If you you need assistance please ask, I will and I'm sure others would be more then happy to assist (includng financially). I would also like to give my personal opinion on the 3 CD set of ELP RE-WORKS. Very different then any other ELP release that I've ever heard. By far, the 3rd disc (the bonus disc) was the best. It seems the three discs are set to ELP's version of "Fanfare for the common man", but remixed with dance grooves. The liner notes state that Keith, Greg & Carl had input and added instruments to the project. The mixer was Mike Bennett. I found it very interesting because throughout the mixes you hear all different ELP Tunes/hooks. I've heard many different mixes of other Classic Bands and this is by far the best of them. Although I must admit I don't normally like any mixes. Maybe it's because this is all ELP. Just a quickie to let you know that the ELP version of 'Fanfare' is being used in the UK to advertise vodka (at least, I think that was what it was!). The ad was played on TV at a space in the Australian Grand Prix at the weekend and features a guy watching performing dolphins. In the end, he's in the pool and doing all their tricks with them! The piece starts with the actual fanfare section itself, to then move into the main theme. The ad itself is mildly amusing...but of course, the music is good! Maybe there's info on other platforms there. There are scads of midi and/or music notation programs that produce sheet music from midis. I know more about the latter than the former; in that category, two longtime premier programs are Sibelius and Finale -- I use the mini version of Finale (called Allegro). These programs are designed to help composers write music in a desktop environment and have many, many arcane notation features that would not be meaningful to a casual user. They are also pretty expensive. There are also desktop recording studio programs that convert midis to sheet music -- Cakewalk and Cubase are the ones I'm familiar with. I suspect the big programs like ProTools do the same. I know less about midi programs but I understand that many of them spit out sheet music on demand too, though not necessarily with all the notations a musician would be looking for. That's all I know -- not sure if there are any other online vendors that specialize in midi or notation software specifically. I'll be interested to learn what you hear from the troops!" --------------------------------------------- From: Alex Melhuish [a.melhuish@ntlworld.com] Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 4:35 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Re: Midi and Sheet music Hi I have a suggestion about software compatible with different platforms for making sheet music from midi files. Although it is expensive, Sibelius is unbeatable. Increadably intelligent, version 2 (latest version) is compatible with all version of windows later than 95 and Mac OS/X and Sibelius 7 (different series, before swapping to mac/PC) for Acorn computers (about half the price o fthe previous) will do exactly what you want. They also have intelligent performance techniques where it can cleverly play music as it's meant to be played, not like a computer, like a performer, and it works. I've got experince. (in Japanese, so I can't read it, but it's an instrumental track with orchestra - doesn't sound like Keith's work) 2. Theme of Floi 3. (in Japanese - it's a synth version of Bach's Toccatta and Fugue in Dm, but it doesn't sound like Keith's style; fades off during the Fugue) 4. (in Japanese - similar to track 1, doesn't sound like Keith) 5. Joe and Michiko 6. (same notes as 4) 7. Children of the Light 8. (same notes as 4) 9. Sonny's Skate State 10. (same notes as 4) 11.
