Carl's site has many dates for drum clinics in April and tour dates in May and beyond posted at http://www.carlpalmer.com/news.html – here's hoping for reviews from the troops! Also, it appears the new CD is out, according to http://www.carlpalmer.com/WL-album.html – again, hoping for reviews. The official news release is posted just below – enjoy! =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: BRUCETUNE@aol.com Sent: Thursday, March 20, 2003 8:10 PM To: ELP-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Re: ELP Digest V. 13 #3 John: Here ya go: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 18, 2003 CARL PALMER RELEASES NEW, LIVE SOLO ALBUM: WORKING LIVE – VOLUME I Album features new interpretations of several Palmer classics Carl Palmer, legendary rock drummer and founding member of Emerson Lake & Palmer and Asia, has released Working Live, Volume I, a new solo album and the first to feature his new solo band. The new trio, simply called Palmer, includes the famous drummer along with bassist Dave Marks and guitarist Shaun Baxter. The record features live interpretations of some of Palmer’s best known songs, originally recorded with ELP and on his solo albums. “ I am very excited and happy with the new album,” says Palmer, who produced the record, with the assistance of recording engineer Paul Kennedy. “Although these appear to be live recordings of songs I had released prior, it really is quite different. The major decision for me was to replace the keyboard with an electric guitar. I didn’t want to have band that was the same instrument line up as ELP. Having Shaun on guitar allowed me to give these songs a whole new interpretation, and gave me a chance to address them from a different musical environment. In a lot of ways they are the same and recognizable; but in a lot of ways, they are totally different.” Working Live Volume I was released Monday, March 17th in Europe on Sanctuary Records. The record is due to be released in America and elsewhere, later in the year. “I think my fans will be pleasantly surprised when they hear this CD,” says Palmer. “We took a big risk to record it when we did. We recorded it at one of the UK’s best known clubs, The Robin Hood 2 Club, which has a world class recording studio inside it. The opportunity to capture the band’s live show so easily was too good to pass up, so we went for it. “In reality, the record was done at what was only the band’s fourth gig,” admits Palmer. “We did it two weeks after forming and after only about seven days of rehearsal. But, it turned out great, and there is something to be said about the passion and energy a new band has when they’re flying without a net, so to speak.” The record contains Palmer solo and ELP classics such as “The Enemy God Dances,” “Tank”, “LA Nights” and “The Barbarian.” Also featured were the band’s interpretations of “Toccata,” “Canario,” and other songs. Thus far, Carl Palmer has been touring for over a year with this line up, and will continue to do so during the spring and early summer of this year. Known as a “drummer’s drummer”, Carl Palmer emerged from ELP and Asia, two of the biggest superstar bands to break out of the British music scene in the 1970s and 1980s, respectively. With Emerson, Lake & Palmer he has sold over 40 million records, and with Asia, he enjoyed sales of over 17 million. It reminds me of the way the musical press and presenters such as John Peel jumped ship from the music they played and reviewed as soon as punk came on the scene. Phil may laugh but it did not take long for punk to start displacing prog rock as the music of choice this side of the pond. Anyway it also reminds me of a letter that appeared in a UK music mag probably New Musical Express (the nme in the Brain Salad Surgery song.) in 1976 or thereabouts. The letter lamented the rise of talentless bands with no musical training who were making life difficult "at the expense of struggling bands such as ours" It was signed Emerson,Lake and Palmer, Geneva, Switzerland. Not clear.) 1, 4, 6, 8, 10 Nozomi Aoki 2,5,7,9,11,12 Keith Emerson Harmageddon Overture: Drums Sadokoku Kodo (it could be Sadokuni Kodo) Children of the Light : Rosemary Butler ==== part 4 ==== [ I tried to translate the original so that people can make a sense out of it. So it is not a word to word translation. When you read this translation, I hope you understand what he wanted to say. ] Music strengthens movie "Harmageddon". Kadokawa Pictures is known to heavily use music from motion pictures to promote them. So movie music fans were anxious to find out who would take care the music for Harmageddon. And the choice was an unexpected one. Keith Emerson of ELP was chosen as a music supervisor for the film. People may think that the selection of this popular musician was made to attract more attention to the movie. But after ELP, Emerson has already become the experienced composer/musician in the world of music for motion pictures. He produced "Inferno" (80) and "Nighthawks" (81). And he has become to be known as a popular composer for Hollywood movies as well as the member of ELP. "Theme of Floi" by Emerson enhanced solemnity, thus generated synergy for this motion pictures. Emerson's music used in the description of Floi has become the main musical column. Emerson also made the main theme "Children of the light" (lyrics: Tony Allen). Rosemary Butler offered the vocal. She was the rising start in the US at that time, and also had done the vocal for "Dirty Hero" (82), another Kadokawa movie. She was not as famous as Janis Ian, who did the vocal for "Fukkatsu no hi" (80). But Rosemary Butler become famous in Japan thanks to these two songs. If "Theme of Floi" is the backbone, its opposite - "Harmageddon Overture"- also plays the important role. In contrast with Emerson's synthesizers, Sadokoku Kodo composed and performed "Harmageddon Overture." Kodo was formed by several young men who escaped from the big cities and moved to the Island of Sado. The uniqueness of its performance is well known, and their international debut performance at Berlin Art Festival was highly praised. Barbarism expressed by Japanese drums, wild drumming sound that indicates heartbeat, and the sense of powerful destruction made by the rhythm. "Theme of Floi" that reminds you of the heavenly look, and "Harmageddon Overture" that suggests the bubbling disposition from the bottom of the earth -- this musical contrast intensified the battle between Floi and Genma through ears, Sound tracks cannot exist only with music for main characters. Background music is composed by Aoki. Aoki transformed himself from a performer to an arranger. He took care of music for "Ginga Tentsudou 999." Aoki employs orchestral music based on strings in this movie. Emerson's synthesizers, Kodo's drums, and Aoki's music -- the three different sounds enhanced this motion pictures. Screen information is much less in animations than movies with real actors. Because of this, importance of music is even significant in animations. The success of Harmageddon owes greatly to the music. Basically, Keith said that "progressive" was more ordered, whereas "psychedelic" had no rules at all, or words of that ilk. Short but to the point (I think!). I downloaded the 30 day free trial, and used it for a short while the other night. It did a very nice job making readable sheet music out of some midi's. Blade of Grass, Hammer it Out, Close to Home etc. all looked good. Not "perfect" but very readable and more importantly, playable. It did a nice job on Firth of Fifth (Genesis), for example, producing the piano intro on three staffs, RH melody, LH octaves in the bass, and the LH chords on a middle bass clef. A little unusual, but it actually makes sense, if you're familiar with the piece. Hope I don't offend anyone with a reference to a non Emerson song ;) There's a ton of menu options that I haven't played with yet, but for free, it can't hurt to look at it. BTW, anyone know if Emerson's arrangement of "America" is available as a midi file? Esp. the version from Letterman's show... (EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER; excellent condition, contents: trilogy, the endless enigma (part I), the endless enigma (part II), take a pebble, the sheriff, jeremy bender, benny the bouncer; (will be auctioned once only) and due to expire Ends 04-May-03 22:36:37 BST. Nothing particularly odd about that - eBay auctions any amount of sheet music but... ...the starting price is a hundred quid (100UKP). Now, I'm as chipper as the next bloke at the thought of ELP sheet music and would probably sell someone else's granny (haven't one of my own) for a few sheets of ELP but a hundred quid as the opening gambit and the threat that it will be auctioned once only - that has to be greedy and a half. Anyway, that's the rant over and done with, on with the meat of the matter. There is very little (or appears to be very little) ELP sheet music out there. I hear mention of three books. The one described above, the Greatest Hits book (C'est La Vie, Endless Enigma I+II, From the beginning, I believe in Father Christmas, Karn Evil 9 I part II, Lucky Man, Still You Turn me On, Take a Pebble and Trilogy, and one that has a good lump of Tarkus in it plus some extra stuff. Scream as I will, they all seem out of stock, out of print and out of sight (although I still think £100 for a first bid is excessive) Luck, good fortune and tenacity gained me the first two books. I've never been precious with kit (I even lent a C3 to someone for a couple of years but he bent it so I've given up lending tonewheel organs for now) so, when a fellow ELP enthusiast begged for the loan of my Greatest Hits book in return for the loan of his Tarkus book, I was happy to let him borrow it - not since then have I seen it nor have I ever been granted sight of the Tarkus book. Fortune shone when I was telling another ELP enthusiast this ghastly tale: 'I've two copies of Greatest Hits,' he said and posted me one. The fee? A hundred quid perhaps? No. Just the promise that if I ever laid eyes on the elusive Tarkus sheet music, I would let him have sight of it too. Alas, Tarkus eludes me and I suspect that it is for the following reasons: 1) People tend to be precious with things like ELP sheet music because it's rare and there are thieves about - my experience proves that. 2) Over all we tend to be an honest lot - not given to making copious photocopies of sheet music that breaches ELP's copyrights. 3) There doesn't seem to be a quick or honest way around this... Unless: Thesis One: There are a million ELP MIDI files scattered around cyberspace - what about downloading a raft of those, squirting them through Performer or Sibelius or suchlike and churning ELP sheet music out of the other end. Fine in theory but it still breaches ELP's copyright because I don't think any of the MIDI files are authorised (Darn...) Thesis Two: Find someone with the ELP Sheet Music books and someone with the hands of a concert pianist (or an Emerson or Suchlike) and do the 'generating a MIDI file from the music' thing which can then be distilled through Performer or Sibelius etc... - a bit less contentious but I'm still sure that there are copyright issues and it requires a bl**dy good musician and a copy of the music. So, if neither of those are acceptable, where do we have to go to make ELP 'music' attainable to people who would like to busk a bit of ELP on their piano/organ/synth/guitar/xylophone/clarinet etc? I thought about putting together a lyric sheet (I know, they're copyright too but you can take them off the albums and surely one copy for your own use at home when you own the original shouldn't be a kick in the wallet to anyone) and then asking those lucky people who own the sheet music to place the appropriate chords under the appropriate syllable plus any other pertinent information (like how I got my YamaKorRolaMoog module to sound like the tuned oscillating filter from Trilogy) in the margins... ...and In the spirit of being reasonable, fair and equitable, if some kind soul would like to scribble me out a set of chords for Tarkus et al, I'd be glad to do the same for the other two books. Unless, of course, anyone knows of a source of the sheet music or can persuade ELP to allow a few photocopies of the remaining books... Cheers Keith Pomfret (and I've finally persuaded my mobile to ring with the last few bars of The Endless Enigma II so now I don't ever reach for my phone when it's someone else's...) [ Editor's Note: Another possible approach would be to see if the publishers of the 'legit' books would allow them to be copied and sold at a reasonable price. If anyone would be interested in writing letters, contacting people, etc. to see if there is a possibility that we could do this legally, let me know.
