As is our tradition here at the ELP Digest, I'd like to wish Keith Emerson a belated happy birthday and Greg Lake a happy 'just in time' birthday. Keith's about to embark on a small European tour and Greg is in the middle of his UK tour. Since the reviews of Greg's shows contain set lists and other spoilers, we've put them at the end of the Digest. So, don't read that part if you don't want to know what he's playing. We hardly ever have 'breaking news' in the ELP Digest of the sort that makes the newspaper but we do this issue. It appears that the original paintings that served as the cover to the ELP 'Brain Salad Surgery' album didn't make it back to Switzerland after they were part of an H.R. Giger show in Prague. You can read about this on the ELP Digest home page (www.brain-salad.com) which also has a link to the news on H.R. Giger's official site. Elsewhere in this issus, there is also some 'final' (we think and hope) comments on the 'Rocky' comment made on the 'Welcome Back...' live album and more about the 'Beyond the Beginning' DVD. And, oh yes, there's a new ELP tribute band that's announced themselves. OK, it isn't 'How to Play Karn Evil #9, all three movements (preferred, ahem)" but it was marginally interesting. The instructor goes through the song, then demonstrates the chords involved (being one of Greg's first songs, it ain't that involved!) This gets no response from the audience except for one guy who yells wooo! to which Keith responds a little sarcastically.... "yeah, get in there". Anyway, Love the Digest. It's called "Didge Digitals Black Moon", and our first gig is at The Duke Of York in Todmorden!! on Friday 25th November. (Keiths birthplace). I will have a web site up and running soon, www.didge-digital.com Incidentally I used to be in a rock band called FM and I helped get a band going called Off The Wall (Pink Floyd tribute) but needed something a bit more challenging on the keys! Cheers....................Didge. =========================== Tour Reviews -- ***SPOILERS BELOW *** =========================== From: Bernard Delmage Sent: Monday, October 24, 2005 7:14 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Greg's show Well I popped along to Tunbridge Wells on Saturday evening to see what Greg was up to, and I am glad I did. It was a shame to see so many empty seats but Jim Davidson worked his socks of selling programmes in the bar before hand and hinted that this show rocks, and he was right. As all British ELP fans will know, over the years we have been starved of performances whilst the band were off playing all round the world. It has been great therefore to be able to see the guys live, albeit in different bands. Those of you with tickets to see Greg, you will not be disappointed. The band is excellent and treatment of the music is first class. Keith and Greg are both playing with fine muscians, but I do find it sad that they guys that created such great music cannot resolve their differences and go and and play it togther, still, this is better than nothing and Greg's show lacks nothing in passion and production. Bruce Pilato says that the Croydon show will be recorded for a DVD. All the favourites are here and I believe we ought to be grateful to Jim Davidson for getting Greg back on the road to recreate some great musical moments.. and at long last I have heard the great man sing one of my favourite ever songs, I Belive in Father Christmas..played with all the magic of the single....go see him and enjoy the show! --------------------------------------------- From: Maid4pleaz Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 12:47 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Re: ELP Digest Vol. 15 #06 Hi Saw Greg Lake at Cliffs Pavilion on 24th October. 1st class performance - shame not more in the audience to appreciate it. Have already booked tickets to catch the show again at Fairfield Halls in November! He's still got it!! Ray James - London --------------------------------------------- From: Jeremy Robinson Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 7:13 AM To: ELP-digest Subject: Greg Lake Saw Greg Lake on the first night of his 2005 tour. Absolutely stunning! The ELP and King Crimson material still shines and resonates. It was striking how much ELP's music *really rocked* when performed live. It's not only intellectual or fiddly or pompous music, it really rocks out. And pieces such as 'Lucky Man', 'Schizoid Man' and 'Pictures At an Exhibition' were deeply moving. Seeing Greg Lake perform those songs was truly extraordinary - and as significant, for me, as any of the rock 'greats' (Dylan, McCartney, Bowie, Wonder, whoever). Amazing. --------------------------------------------- From: Tony Wawryk Sent: Tuesday, November 01, 2005 5:35 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Greg Lake Tour I guess you'll be inundated with news and reviews of Greg's tour, but anyway, in case you aren't, here's a review of his show at High Wycombe that I attended on October 27th, paraphrased from a post I put on both Greg's website and progresiveears.com. I hope the audiences build up as word of the band's excellence gets out, as this is a show for 3000- seat halls. Interestingly, I wrote to the promoters about the perceived lack of promotion, and they wrote back with a very comprehensive list of activities they'd undertaken - makes you wonder what a rock legend has to do these days to get seen.... Thanks as always for the work in keeping the Digest alive! Best regards Tony Wawryk Just back from the Wycombe show and I'm still smiling.... It really is a show designed for bigger halls - there were maybe 6-700 at tonight's performance - but I doubt there is a better produced show outside of the stadium circuit. The tour promoters really don't seem to have been doing their job. The sound and lighting was excellent, the 8-piece (including Greg) band were stellar (all of them, with David Arch and Florian Ophale outstanding) and Greg is in really excellent voice. The only slightly rough edges I detected were during the superb arrangement of Pictures, and he belted out the 'Death is Life' ending very convincingly. I would have liked to see him play some bass, maybe take a couple of the guitar solos, but the most important thing is that he is back playing live and singing as well as he probably has done for over 25 years. It's true that the seat-of-the-pants sense of adventure that you got with ELP wasn't there, but I guess that's not surprising. He has clearly been very careful in preparation for this tour, and it's been worth it. Greg and the band were very gracious and friendly to those of us who stayed to say hi - it's hard to let someone know how much 35 years of their music has meant to you in 30 seconds, but I hope I didn't sound too dumb. Welcome Back, indeed! Set: In the court of the crimson king (what an opener!) Paper Blood Love you too much (the one song I wouldn't miss if it were dropped) Take a pebble (lovely flamenco-styled guitar solo in the middle) From the beginning (elegant as always) Footprints in the snow I believe in Father Christmas Lucky man Farewell to arms -interval- Fanfare for the common man (driving!) Touch & Go Hang on to a Dream (a real oddity, this - not sure why Greg chose it, as far as I know, he has no previous link with this song?) [Editor's Note: Actually, ELP covered this Nice cover on the Return of the Manticore CD set. - John - ] 21st century schizoid man (very dramatic, and wonderfully played) Pictures at an exhibition (a superb arrangement, truly!) -encore- Karn evil 9 1st pt 2 --------------------------------------------- From: Sue Wealands Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 7:47 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Greg Lake Tour I've just got home from seeing the Greg Lake Band at Newcastle City Hall - what a show! It was everything that Paul Marsh (ELP Digest #15) said it was (he was at the first night of the tour) and more! Greg's voice was absolutely brilliant, & the young guitarist (Florian Opahle) is something to behold - so much skill for a lad of 22. After the show, Greg, the band & backing singers all sat at the back of the auditorium, posed for photos, chatted to everyone & autographed everything (including the plaster cast on my broken arm). I asked Greg outright if there was even the tiniest possibility of ELP re-forming for one last tour or show, and he said definitely not....except maybe for charity. (How much can we raise...?????). The only downside of the night was that the place was less than half full - I felt ashamed; where were the armies of Geordie ELP fans? I suspect that it must have been very disappointing for Greg to see so few people, but the quality made up for the lack of quantity. I hope that the rest of the tour is better supported. I'm now looking forward to seeing Carl Palmer in Sheffield on Nov 26, & WAS looking forward to seeing Keith in Newcastle on Nov 4, but the show has been cancelled - anyone know why, or whether or not it is to be rescheduled? Many thanks for keeping the Digest going, John - you do a great job! Cheers Sue Wealands --------------------------------------------- From: Jimcam62 Sent: Friday, November 04, 2005 12:13 PM To: ELP-Digest Subject: Greg Lake - Edinburgh Just been to the Edinburgh show. Great concert spanning a wide variety of his music from KC up to the present. The sound quality was very impressive and a young guitarist who is absolutely awesome, pity a few more people didn't make the effort . I would suggest that next time Greg should play Glasgow. Better theatres and much easier to get than Edinburgh, after all the capital's street plan is nearly 300 years old and not fit to cope with 21st century demands! (i.e. cars) Keep up the good work. =========================== Digest subscription, mailing address, and administrative stuff to: elp-digest-request@reluctant.com ELP-related info that you want to put in the digest to: elp-digest@reluctant.com Back issues are available from the ELP Digest web site: URL: http://www.brain-salad.com/ Note: The opinions, information, etc. contained in this digest are those of the original message sender listed in each message.
