It is from this "stockpile" that Keith Emerson has selected the best versions that he considers worthy to be compiled under what he describes as an "audio montage of musical snapshots", covering his career from the mid 1980's to almost the present day. 'Off The Shelf' is therefore a mixture of form and style covering everything from the progressive textures of ELP right through to the quirky avant-garde of Frank Zappa to the New Wave Punk wisdom of the late, great Ian Dury." I was trying to decide which ELP dvd to get as my first title as I have only recently bought a player. In the end, for Christmas, I invested £14.99 in Beyond the Beginning and just felt the need to write to say to all out there without a copy - BUY IT! There are some staggeringly good performances from the band and individually and I think that there is a fair balance of time showcasing each of them. In addition, the sound is often excellent and is never less than acceptable, in my case played through a Linn Activ System. As a survey of the different phases of the band's evolution it is excellent. Although I was a fan from the start I had forgotten how good they were from inception. Take a Pebble soon reminded me. And their performances at the Cal Jam showed the band at their peak. Equally, Pirates with full orchestra is a bit of a mess, but what ambition and what a hell of a try. Some of the extras are fascinating too, particularly the rehearsal. My message is simple. If there have been better issues for other bands recently, good luck to them. My ELP cup is half full not half empty and this is the best money I have ever spent. --------------------------------------------- From: Robin Durie Sent: Thursday, March 02, 2006 11:36 AM To: elp-digest-request Subject: themes from Vol 16.1 Hi John If no one else has already done so, you may want to include these responses to various points that cropped up in the latest Digest: Isn’t the footage to which David Carswell refers to be found on the Masters from the Vault DVD (which we’re not supposed to own!)? Dave Wysocky refers to a quotation by Keith of Sonny Rollins’ ‘St Thomas’, on the Aquatarkus solo. Keith often uses this theme in his solos – but one of the earliest recorded versions (if not the earliest) dates back to one of the BBC Radio sessions recorded by the Nice (and now available in CD format). This particular session includes a version of St Thomas – which, we are informed by the BBC dj in ‘grooviest’ possible voice, the band were messing about with in the studio at the time – with vocals by Roy Harper. The lyrics were written, apparently, on the spot – and can’t you just tell: ‘Dad’s having a kip on the couch/So mind how you go/ Watch your head on the staircase/’Ouch’, well there you go/ Mum’s in the oven, cooking babe/You’d better leave her alone/ And I’m so far I’m really gone/So mind how you go…’ repeated, frequently Perhaps not their finest moment! Finally – a lot of people have drawn attention to John Peel’s infamous remarks about ELP recently. However, the fact that he should have treasured the 1st single by the Nice, as Ronald Reay points out, shouldn’t be so much of a surprise. Peel was always a big fan of the Nice, and the 45’ trailer single for the Nice’s 1st album is linked together by a series of more or less humorous remarks by Peel. One of these remarks was used as part of the Intro tape by the Nice on their reunion tour a couple of years ago. The sentiments he expressed about ELP at the time were not at all uncommon (though perhaps not always so vehemently expressed) – there were many who mourned the passing of the Nice, and who felt, rightly or wrongly, that Lee Jackson & Brian Davidson had been hard done by the ‘subterfuge’ of Keith & Greg. There were also many who felt that ELP lost much that was special about the Nice’s sound (not least the ‘looseness’ of their improvisatory playing). (By the way – for those who might be interested, new CD impressions of the albums by Refugee [Pat Moraz, Lee Jackson & Brian Davidson] and Every Which Way [the band formed by Davidson after the Nice were disbanded] have recently become available from European suppliers on eBay – and very good they are too!) My dad said he was a real nice guy, not troubled by the > request for the autograph at all. Quite a treat. Here's my Emerson autograph story. A few years ago, probably around 1999, I attended NAMM (a trade show in the musical instrument industry; it used to actually stand for something like "North American Music Merchants," but now they've gone global and renamed themselves the International Music Products Association, while retaining the NAMM name and tradeshow). I was an attorney working for Creative Labs, whose parent company, Creative Technology, owned E-mu Systems (and maybe Ensoniq by that time, too). Anyway, I turned a corner and very nearly literally ran into Keith Emerson. It took me a second to recover from nearly running into someone, and another second for it to register that this was Keith Emerson! Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to ask for an autograph, and was carrying my work notebook at the time. He was great about it, just saying "sure," and signing with a flourish. I enjoyed that NAMM trip. I also met Bob Moog and Roger Linn. I wish I'd gotten their autographs, too, especially Dr. Moog's. --------------------------------------------- =========================== Questions (and Answers!) =========================== From: bjorn-are.davidsen Sent: Monday, February 13, 2006 3:35 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Re: 1970 era video Hello John, you may perhaps also forward this info to Dave & Jewel? >From: Dave & Jewel >Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2006 8:20 AM >To: elp-digest >Subject: 1970 era video > >I have been going over every video I have been able to find of EL&P and >one particular video, which I first saw on a Canadian Educational >channel (TVOntario) in the mid-70’s, has eluded my search. > >It is very similar to the footage from 1970 Lyceum footage with one >difference (and this is the part that makes me know I have not yet >found the video) – during Take a Pebble at the conclusion of the "I had >a dog and his name was Blue" bit there is this exchange between Greg >Lake and Carl Palmer where Carl comes out from behind the drum kit to >Greg’s mic to do the "fingercymbal" and Greg (and the audience) are >laughing and Carl keeps saying "no, but seriously..." This is the Belgium TV special from early 1971, and it is available on two different DVD's: A: The band supported release "C'est La Vie" from 2006 (a mix of tracks from Belgium 71, Montreal 77 and Montreaux 97) B: As a legal release, though not supported by the band (they get no royalties), as a full concert, named "Masters from the Vaults" (2004). Barbarian is the only piece not available also on C'est La Vie. Regards Bjorn-Are --------------------------------------------- From: jesse mcglown Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2006 8:06 PM To: elp-digest Subject: survival of cal jam "raw" videotapes? John, I was surfing through a few Deep Purple sites, and came upon a reference to the "surfacing" in 2002 of the two-inch videotapes of DP's California Jam set...these would be the original tapes from which the broadcast masters were edited ( the ones that were erased in 1978 ). I'm very intrigued: if these tapes of raw footage have survived, then presumably the raw footage tapes of ELPs set exist as well. It stands to reason; if networks typically didn't keep footage once a master was culled from it, then all of the reels shot at California Jam would have been wiped to be reused later. I'd always wondered, having acquired the import DVD of Deep Purple's set, how the four hundred line resolution was maintained ( two-inch videotape was the only format throughout the seventies capable of that picture clarity ), along with the fact of virtually their entire set having remained intact ( versus ELPs truncated set ). Sheer speculation, sure, but why would they have continued to archive Purple's set on tapes costing three hundred dollars per one-hour reel ( 1974 dollars at that! ), while erasing all of the other groups' raw footage...it's all the more frustrating, because if ELP's entire set exists on two-inch tapes, there aren't many quadruplex VTRs left that will play these tapes back! Can anyone possibly shed any light on this? [ Editor's Note: I've wondered about this, too. In fact, way back in the very first ELP Digest (or thereabouts), I was wondering how Deep Purple was able to get their set onto laserdisc (one of the best video formats of the time) while ELP couldn't. I don't know if someone at Image Entertainment was able to get the DP masters out of ABC (or Don Kirschner or whoever had them). One can only hope that ELP's is found someday. Of course, I'm assuming that ELP's management has looked and asked, etc. I recall the story that whoever owned what was found (the 'as broadcast' snippets') wanted a hefty royalty for what turned up on some of the ELP videos/DVDs a few years ago. But let's hope someone finds them someday and we can all buy copies to say 'thanks!' to whoever finds them and salvages them. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: John Whapshott Sent: Thursday, March 16, 2006 7:15 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Karn Evil 9 Part 3 Hi! I've just bought Beyond The Beginning, which in my humble opinion is not as bad as I was expecting - in fact, dare I say, it's pretty good (though not without faults)! As a matter of curiosity, can someone tell me how they did the accelerating Moog sounds right at the end of Karn Evil 9? Nowadays of course you would use a sequencer, but as it's on 1973's WBMFTTSTNE, I assume it had to be done another way. But how? Thanks!
