This started out as the 'Greg Lake Birthday Edition' and, alas, has also turned into the 'Happy 2008!' edition. Ouch. Anyway... since the last Digest, there was news that Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman were going to appear together as an opening act for the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute show in London - more commonly referred to as the Led Zeppelin reunion. Then, a problem with a hand/finger of Jimmy Page forced a date change and Rick had to bow out to a previous commitment. So, KE joined Chris Squire, Alan White, Simon Kirke, etc. for a rendition of Fanfare for the Common Man. I haven't seen a full version yet but, in this Digest, we'll see that at least one clip appears on YouTube. Thanks to the many people who answered the question about the movie in which part of Karn Evil 9 appeared. And there's some interesting news reported from a Carl Palmer Band appearance in Glasgow. All this and the usual discussion. Of course, I do want to take this opportunity to reflect and give thanks to all of you who read and especially to those of you who contribute to the Digest. WIthout you, I'm not sure the Digest would continue to exist and I'm sure I'd know less about what's happening with ELP and their fans. Thanks! And best wishes for a happy and healthy 20008! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .… Keith’s site has updated info on his appearance at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute/Led Zeppelin reunion -- an “Em-counters” report on his recent Big Band appearance in L.A. -- info about a limited edition sculpture -- and thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes … all at: http://www.keithemerson.com/News/whatsnew.html For a few more days, you can also see Keith's annual Holiday Greeting at the home page: http://www.keithemerson.com --------------------------------------------- Greg sends his thanks for birthday wishes at: http://www.greglake.com/newsite/newhotsheet.asp --------------------------------------------- Carl has tour info and more at: http://www.carlpalmer.com/ Enjoy! =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: iain stewart Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 9:11 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Carl Palmer Band in Glasgow (ELP Re-union?) Hi John et al, I recently attended the Carl Palmer Band gig at The Ferry in Glasgow, which in itself was a fantastic evening's entertainment. The set list included a complete version of Pictures at an Exhibition (the original ELP version). During the course of his conversation with the audience, Carl announced that Keith and Greg had contacted him with a view to getting back together, however he was "playing hard to get", just to be awkward. He did however finish by saying, "You never know.......". Could this be the first positive sign in many years that they may all have finally settled their differences, and be willing to give it a go again? It is interesting because the same line is played by Wakeman adding a pivot note between each melody note (one of his trademark keyboard techniques) whereas Keith's plays the melody straight but with his own unique phrasing. Keep on the good work! Cheers --------------------------------------------- From: Richard McFarland Sent: Friday, November 02, 2007 10:22 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Hoping for an ELP reunion Hi and thanks for keeping we posted- I continue to expect a new Emerson Lake & Palmer studio LP/CD...After reading through this newsletter it seems a few others are 'tired' of re-releases. NOTE to Carl, Greg and Keith: your clashing egos or whatever contributes greatly to your fantastic sound; so do a sound check and give us E.L.P. fans a new studio recording. Think of it this way: EVERY E.L.P. fan "World wide," is going to buy a copy or two. Things could be worse :however Tori Amos and her power trio are fantastic and thank goodness as I love listening to an accomplished keyboard artist not to mention REAL Bass and Percussion that comes in the package called Tori Amos----- Cheers, Richard McFarland --------------------------------------------- From: Roy Henderson Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2007 7:42 AM To: ELp-digest Subject: On eating humble pie, hearing new things in familiar songs and is Tarkus on the way back? Dear all, First of all - isn't great to wrong sometimes? Recent posts have had me listening to KE's jazzy tunes on Emerson Plays Emerson, Off the Shelf etc. and great fun they are too. So thanks all - I retract! Secondly, I've listened to the back catalogue with Ed Macan's 'Endless Enigma' book as my co-pilot. Pieces I'd under appreciated or maybe stopped listening to, have come alive again. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Over-familiar songs sound fresh. I am thinking of the third part of The Three Fates, Hymn/The Only Way/ Infinite Space, A's Bolero, All of BSS, Brain Salad Surgery (The song), Pirates, Bullfrog (had to buy all of Back Door's stuff because of it...), When The Apple..... and more. Also, I was never a great fan ELPowell album and EM's comments on the arrangements, midi and digital keyboards have been a way into their studio album for me. As regards the box set, it is easy to understand the completists' frustration but it is nicely presented (misprints apart) and Mar Y Sol does fill in a gap between the 1970/1 live material and the WBMFTTSTNE material. But - my main reason for writing. Tarkus is everywhere. Over the past few years there has been versions by: Ed Macan Prophecies Solo Piano Sax 4th avenue Delusions de Grandeur Sax Quartet Various Encores, Legends and Paradox Rock Tribute Jordan Rudess The Road Home Solo album Zip Tang Luminiferous Ether Jazz-Rock Band Aki Kuroda 'Chamber' style Not to mention the tribute bands like Noddy's Puncture and the KE Band itself. Does anyone know of others? Is the music that dare not speak its name coming in from the cold? Finally, anybody listening to Battles? Regards from Glasgow Roy Henderson PS Couldn't get out to see CP recently. I enjoyed it very much. I've got a question regarding Lachesis (Piano solo in The 3 Fates) that some of your readers may be able to help with. About midway though the piece and briefly near the end there are passages that consist of broken 5ths in 32nd notes in the right hand over an arpeggiated ostinato in tripleted 16th notes in the left hand. This translates to 4 notes in the right hand against 3 notes in the left hand played simultaneously and rapidly. I'm having some difficulty performing it on the piano. I'd be interested in any advice your readers or contributors could provide on mastering those passages. Also Rick if it's out there. Does anyone have any piano or the great pipe organ sheet music for any one of the above? I know Keith didn't write some of his great solos or parts but maybe Carl or Greg's music has some potential. I only have the black book of their supposed greatest hits including "take.....", Trilogy, Enigma, etc. and the best piece is Benny the Bouncer." Of course I'd be willing to compensate. I do have sheet music for Barrelhouse Rag and Glorietta which was a gift from the Emerson folks. If there is anything out there for Rick Wakeman's solo music - please let me know. Especially Merlin and full scores for the 6 Wives. In the past I played a classical recital of Rachmaninoff followed by "Take a Pebble" as an encore. It was the hit of the night. Does anyone know where a copy of the DVD of the ELP video that featured a concert at the Lyceum in Belgium might be found? It began following the band en route from the hotel to the club. The program commenced with a flawlessly energetic version of The Barbarian, included Take a Pebble (with "A Dog Named Blue" interlude) and it concluded with Nutrocker and Rondo. I somehow lost this disc and would be delighted if someone can contact me with any info that would help track it down. It appears to be out of print and I cannot recall the title of the video. The Knife Edge (complete with Greg's erroneous stanza repeat faux pas!) portion of the show has been included in some subsequent compilations. Can anyone help? It is in my opinion the best footage of the band ever released. The original video had only eight songs but it is a fantastic visual documentary of the "ELP in action" experience. I would gratefully welcome any input from of the digest readers who might know the original disc title or where I might acquire a copy from someone willing to part with theirs. Also, Almost certain that there is a liner note that Keith Emerson played piano on Hallowed Be Thy Name. Odd, because I seem to remember the flap about Greg not using him on C'est La Vie (accordion). It's available on DVD. Now for my question. Can anyone confirm whether Keith played at least a portion of the "Notre Dame Victory March" during either "Hoedown" or "Fanfare" when ELP performed at the University of Notre Dame at some point in the 70s?
