As some of you who follow ELP information on various other internet sites may know, Keith recently had surgery that led to the cancellation of the Emerson/Lake tours scheduled for Japan and Europe. The latest news is that Keith is recovering. Since this happened as work had started on an update of his web site, Keith's web site has been put on hold temporarily and official updates are being done via his Official Facebook page. (See below). With that 'bad news' out of the way, the good news is that Carl Palmer has announced a North America and South America tour that will be starting next week! He's also contributed some of his collection to a charity event in the UK. Lots of details on that below. Still haven't figured out which Carl Palmer Band show(s) I might be able to get to but an evening of instrumental ELP music with Carl and his band sounds like a fun time to me! Also, I'm finally getting around to the messages I got from those who were able to attend the ELP show at the High Voltage Festival back in July. I was hoping more Digest readers would be there and share their points of view. But the small sample I received are greatly appreciated and give the rest of us an idea of what it was like to have been there. Finally, lots of YouTube suggestions and the usual commentary and questions. Thanks for staying tuned! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites No new updates on Keith's site as it undergoes major redesign, but visit his Facebook fan page in the meantime at: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=438268766751 --------------------------------------------- Greg's site has information about the cancelled Japan and Europe dates, and information about Keith's recent surgery as well as a note from Keith, written before the procedure: http://www.greglake.com/news_news.html --------------------------------------------- Carl's site is full of information about the upcoming tour (as is this issue of the Digest!) - read more at: http://www.carlpalmer.com/ Enjoy! =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: John Arnold Sent: Friday, October 01, 2010 3:16 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Carl Palmer Band tour - Oct/Nov 2010: instrumental music of ELP As noted on www.carlpalmer.com/#TourDates Carl Palmer Band To Embark On Historic 29 Date 2010 North & South American Tour Rock legend will offer an entire evening the instrumental rock classics of EMERSON LAKE & PALMER. Prepare for the thunder and the fury... Carl Palmer, among the most celebrated drummers in Rock History, is preparing to embark on his first extensive solo band tour since 2006. Entitled: Carl Palmer & His Band - Celebrates The Music of Emerson Lake & Palmer, the show features bold new arrangements of many of the best-loved instrumental music of ELP. The tour runs from October 12th through November 21, 2010, and will include 29 shows in Canada, The U.S., and South America. "I am very excited to again be returning to the US, Canada, and South America, with my solo band performing an evening of ELP music and other great composers," says Palmer. Although The Carl Palmer Band has continually toured through out Europe and the UK, this is the group's first extensive Western Hemisphere tour in five years. "Since the early part of this decade I have been playing with my own power trio, replacing the keyboards with electric guitar. I felt that was the only honest way to approach the music of ELP. I didn't want to have a singer trying to sound like Greg Lake. ELP did so much instrumental music, this format made sense to me. Hearing the keyboard parts done on guitar is certainly different, but just as satisfying. The idea was to re-invent this iconic music." The group, which features Palmer on drums and percussion; guitarist Paul Bielatowicz and new bassist Simon Fitzpatrick, will serve up an evening of classic ELP music, presented through exciting and innovative new versions. An all-instrumental show, "Carl Palmer Celebrates The Music of ELP" promises to be among the most musically compelling live shows of 2010. Palmer has released four solo albums since the last ELP tour 1998. They are: DO YA WANNA PLAY?, a 2 CD anthology and WORKING LIVE VOL 1, Vol 2., and the all new-Vol.3, released this fall on Eagle Rock. Since his last extensive US-Canadian tour in 2006, Palmer has remained active with ASIA (Geoff Downes, Steve Howe and John Wetton). ASIA has remained a successful live act throughout the world and released two studio albums since regrouping. For this solo band tour, Palmer will again meet fans after each show, doing autograph signings at most venues. "As with the last tour, I want to get close to my fans once again," says Palmer. "There are so many of them out there who are really heartfelt and have supported me through my entire career. I very much look forward to bringing it all back around again in intimate venues." The Carl Palmer Band will play nearly two hours and drum enthusiasts can expect an evening of compelling percussive theatrics, from the man who brought the drum set to the forefront of rock n roll music. 'Memories in Music in The Midlands,' a charity exhibit displaying items of memorabilia from the personal collections of area musicians and their fans, has opened at the St Paul's Gallery in Birmingham. Carl's fascinating contribution takes pride of place among the items on loan, with a gold album, a Japanese Kansai jacket, signed snare drum and drumsticks, a Karate photograph of Carl, and artwork from the Brain Salad Surgery Tour. Fans can read more about the history behind the items as well as see portions of an interview Carl gave for the exhibit playing in the gallery. For the charity fundraising, artist Cynthia Blair has done an original painting of Carl, which can also be bought as limited edition prints. Other artists represented in the exhibit include Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, Guitarist Albert Lee, ELO drummer Bev Bevan, Steve Winwood, Deborah Bonham and Robert Plant, as well as musicians known only locally. There are handwritten lyrics, instruments, stage clothes, tickets, posters and photographs to enjoy, a collection that has never been seen together. The exhibit opens daily (Mon-Sat 10AM to 6PM, Sun 11AM-3PM) until October 17th. Admission is £3.50; all proceeds benefit Macmillan Cancer Support at home (www.macmillan.org.uk), and Task Brasil's 'Casa Jimmy' abroad (www.taskbrasil.org.uk), a home for the abandoned street children in Rio. There are also three contests to enter as well as items to purchase to further assist the charities. Visit www.memoriesinmusic.com for more details. Memories in Music is a non profit company created by Annie Hollinshead, a life-long music fan originally from the U.S. Greatly inspired by the music of British musicians, Annie designed the company and its activities to give something back as a thanks to those musicians whose music influenced her life and the lives of so many others for the better. The current exhibit launches a new project to give music fans a place to honour musicians they admire with an emphasis on charity; and for musicians, a world-class building to house their personal memorabilia in a heritage setting, passing on their legacy to fans of the future. The Music Heritage Project will be a museum quality building for UK musicians of all genres and all levels of fame, those who are known world-wide as well as nationally and locally. As an example of the type of items The Music Heritage Project seeks to preserve for the nation, a piece of handwritten poetry by T Rex singer Marc Bolan is on display. The orchestration is fantastic and superbly balanced. This is how Emerson's music was meant to sound. What intrigued me the most was something that I really wouldn't have thought of until I heard the suite orchestrated: Tarkus - with the right choreographer - is well suited to a modern dance/ballet interpretation. No, I don't necessarily mean with Manticores and the Tarkus. This piece is capable of transcending the original lyrical theme and artwork. I hope that Takashi Yoshimatsu treats us next to an arrangement and performance of Karn Evil Nine (all four parts) and maybe Trilogy as well! ELP Live At The High Voltage Festival, from 25 July this year, will be released on CD on 4 October 2010, along with Asia's performance from 24 July. Digest readers may be interested to know that also included in this series of releases are the performances from both Marillion, and the original line up of Argent (what a great year for classic prog rock reunions!). ELP's live High Voltage release is not to be confused with another compilation released around the time of the festival and entitled ... 'High Voltage' (and racked out in many HMV retail stores as 'Live At High Voltage'!). This is the one with a blue cover and which includes nothing from 'Brain Salad Surgery'(?). It does have some great photos in the inlay though! Greg Lake's two 'From The Underground' collections were finally released in the UK for the first time earlier this year, along with his 'Live On The King Biscuit Flower Hour'. Likewise ELPowell's 'The Sprocket Sessions' (although there's no sign of ELPowell's 'Live In Concert'). ELP's 'Pictures At An Exhibition' gets its 'most complete version of the film available' release on DVD, which means that everything is included except for 'The Barbarian'. Looks as though the estate of Bela Bartok and / or the music publishers have denied approval for this to be included, and it's also missing from the extra footage on this release, taken from Belgium in 1971 (and previously issued as 'Masters From The Vaults'). Another ELP DVD appeared a few months ago entitled 'C'est La Vie', and about which I know little, except that it includes the track 'Emotions In Motion-Oasis Of Luck' (??). Released for the first time as a Region 2 DVD is Dario Argento's 'Inferno', which of course features Keith's excellent film score. Due for DVD release on 2 November 2010 is The Keith Emerson Band Featuring Marc Bonilla, "Moscow" I found the link below at www.planetrock.com: http://varesevintage.wordpress.com/2010/09/07/the-keith-emerson-band-featu ring-marc-bonilla-moscow-dvd/ And finally, some Asia news, care of www.johnwetton.co.uk: Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of ASIA's brand new live CD / DVD "Spirit Of The Night - Live in Cambridge 2009" on October 15th 2010. A proper US release will follow in early 2011. I'm curious: does anyone reading this know if there are plans to release ELP's 1977 Montreal concert on DVD? And might we see the footage for the tracks which appeared on Works Live only? Thanks for any info! Hope this makes sense. The other week on a TV show, here in the UK, called 'Lewis', a detective drama set in Oxford, there was a scene between a college student and her teacher, which went something like this. Teacher is listening to music when the student enters. Teacher: what's this? Student listens: Pictures at an exhibition, Mussorgsky. Emerson Lake and Palmer. Teacher: And. Student: with Keith on his ribbon controller. Teacher: Wrong Student: You mean it's not Saint Keith. Teacher: session musician. Student: Oh, it's a tribute band. Teacher: yes Scene continues, but no more of ELP mentioned or of the band playing. Did not see if the band was mentioned in the credits. Will have to get the DVD. Or anyone out there know who it was. So it is best I leave to others the news and reviews of that performance. As noted elsewhere the recent Japanese orchestral performance of Tarkus is available on iTunes. Recently there has been a wealth of adaptations of this piece. Sax quartet, solo piano, 'chamber' group, etc. the orchestral being the latest. It strikes me that this one brings out the Bernstein-esque and 1970s style soundtrack aspects of Tarkus. Which in turn provokes another idea, namely: The Classic Rock and Prog revival is more than welcome but isn't it time to encourage this branching out into other fields? Could a piece like Tarkus, arranged, say, for orchestra become a setting for a ballet? Or arranged chamber style for contemporary dance? Why not? After all these years... the constant complaint about the 1970 Lyceum concert footage has been the superimposed psychedelic and cartoon crap. I read once that a "clean" videotape copy exists, sans the obnoxious effects. I've hoped against hope that someday "they'll" get it right...apparently not. After all, these are the same people who blew it with the "Beyond the Beginning" DVD ( California Jam footage out of sync with the mediocre-fidelity network monaural audio, while stereo audio from the one-time FM simulcast exists; a disjointed montage of concert clips, etc ). Fortunately for me, another reviewer posted that the "bonus" concert on this new release is nothing other than the Masters of the Vaults footage, already out for a few years. That footage, too, hasn't been changed...more superimposed images, albeit not as blatantly obnoxious as the Lyceum debacle. Tell me again just where the incentive for buying this latest rip-off of "Pictures" is? I'll give Jimmy Page this much: even though he's never met a multi-track tape of a Led Zeppelin concert that he can resist tampering with ( or video footage that he inserts camera angles from different nights into ), he cares. The man is concerned enough, not only about lovingly restoring concert documents of "his band", but also in giving Zep fans good quality ( even if I don't agree with "fixing" bum notes on a live concert recording! ). I certainly don't want performance Warts & Zits in an ELP vintage performance "repaired" via Pro Tools, but at least give it to us as it went down... If anybody from ELP's management happens to be reading this... I won't buy this concert again until you get it right. NOBODY WANTS MARVEL COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS ON TOP OF THIS PERFORMANCE. Please introduce me to the ELP fan who does. If you STILL don't understand, back up and read this again. That means actually going to the trouble of doing some research, and tracking down that pristine copy ( again, take a page from Page's book, pun intended )... we'll wait. We'd rather you take your time, and GET IT RIGHT. --------------------------------------------- From: moliver Sent: Friday, August 13, 2010 3:43 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Re: ELP Digest Vol. 20 #02 Prepare to be amazed.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asm2b30opy4&feature=related Rachel Flowers, aged 16 (you tube, sound required.) --------------------------------------------- From: Roy Henderson [roy.henderson7 Sent: Thursday, September 09, 2010 1:05 PM To: John Arnold Subject: More from Aki K..... Hi John The ELP show at London's Victoria Park on July 25 - as great as it was - obviously has been a one-off. Since Carl Palmer is busy with Asia, his own band, drum clinics etc. we have a similar situation as 25 years ago which ended in the ELPowell project. Seeing Emerson and Lake 2010 on tour with a drum computer isn't much more than a bad joke, really. Many will agree that something has to be done about this, urgently. How can we keep ELP alive? Thinking of great drummers alive whose last name begins with a "P", only Neil Peart (Rush) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) come to mind. The good news is that the latter just left his band. So the new ELP could be Emerson, Lake & Portnoy. Wouldn't that be sensational? And who's gonna make the necessary phone calls? In the old days of The Nice, he'd mike Leslie speaker(s) [ I don't know the type of microphones he used set up around the Leslie speaker(s) ], run the signals through HiWatt amps with the treble turned way up, and out through a pile of Marshall Stacks, to get the Brother Jack McDuff "Rock Candy" sound. With ELP in 1977, I believe that he also used a portable soundproof booth around an off-stage Leslie, in addition to the on-stage Leslie. In the late 1970s or early 1980s [ I don't have the exact date... ], Al Goff [ of Goff Professional (http://www.goffprof.com/) ] also built him a custom percussion booster, that allows Keith to boost the thunk of the percussion effect from 0% up through 300% of the stock Hammond percussion effect. - Martin A. Since it's been so rare for ELP to perform the full Tarkus Suite since the 1970s (to the great frustration of many ELP fans who love Tarkus), is there a good quality audio recording of that available anywhere, and/or did the ELP (hopefully) have that particular concert filmed? --------------------------------------------- From: jesse mcglown Sent: Thursday, July 29, 2010 10:54 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Question regarding "A Time and a Place" Cd set Hello fellow avid ELP fans...does anyone know if the "previously unreleased" BSS Tour tracks on disc one ( Tulsa and Anaheim ) are indeed alternate versions from what's already been released twice? I want SO much to get this set, but I'm struggling: virtually all of it has been available previously, from Wolfgang's Vault complete Works Tour 1977 concerts to snippets from the Isle of Wight release and the Mar y Sol concert. What a set, they've still got it, and yet their approach still seems to have evolved, with Emerson sometimes playing more piano in parts previously assigned to Hammond & synth. This made for a new ELP experience, but not to say that the show was no less than the full ELP experience! The run-in from the piano improvisation after the vocal opening of Take a Pebble to Eruption (still all on piano....it took me a few moments to recognise what was going on!), then a full-blown Tarkus, was a highlight of the set. Maybe my imagination, but I got the feeling there were a lot of nerves from the three of them (maybe not surprising, this was a very important gig for them, the first in 12 years, and some rumours have it this may be the last!? I hope not): very little of Keith's "banter" between numbers, and Greg was obviously very frustrated with the feedback a couple of times....I honestly thought he was going to march offstage to give the hapless engineer a good telling off. But no, the professionalism was immense as you'd expect, the communication on stage as evident as ever, and the music of course beautiful. My only regret, with genuine pangs of sadness, I had to leave to get the train home (long journey), so I walked off field appropriately to "Promenade", with longing looks over my shoulder, missing Fanfare/Rondo. I hope I see all three together again, the fire is still there lads. Welcome home..... Pete PS there was much else at this excellent new festival, I strongly recommend it for next year, very well organised and a good natured vibe, the only festival with a Prog-dedicated stage I believe (Highlights for my Sunday were Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash, Steve Hackett, Argent & Marillion, plus a very funny Q&A session with Rick Wakeman and David "Kid" Jensen) --------------------------------------------- From: Jeanette Ford Sent: Saturday, July 31, 2010 11:04 AM To: elp-digest-request Subject: High Voltage Gig Thought you might like to include this in the next issue of ELP_Digest. Should you speak to Keith, please send him my warmest regards and let him know that he has balls of steel and is truly wonderful. Well, that's that.........the FINAL gig by Emerson, Lake & Palmer took place at the High Voltage Festival in London last week and I was there to say goodbye. It cost a packet, what with train fare, hotel, tickets and London sky-high prices for EVERYTHING, but I am VERY glad that I went! After searching for quite a while I finally found my 18 year-old ELP t-shirt from the last gig I went to at the Royal Albert Hall - after all, you just can't go to an ELP gig without one, can you?! Anyway, armed with my HVF wristband, money, camera and companion, off I went to London. Met lots of ELP fans at the hotel on the Saturday before the gig........it was nice ('scuse the pun) to chat about the old days and compare ELP-related experiences and argue about which was the best gig we'd been to. To be honest, I was not sure how many ELP fans would be there (let alone alive!) I felt like I had come home when I saw so many ELP t-shirts everywhere. Sometimes I feel that I am the only fan who lives in Plymouth, and that's a bummer! On the day of the gig, I did not think that I could survive standing around until 8.45pm when the guys were due to go on, so we enjoyed ourselves bumbling around London until 5.30pm, when we started our journey to Victoria Park. Unfortunately, there were no signs for 'this way to the High Voltage Festival' anywhere, so I had to ask a nice policeman for directions. Quite a long walk along a canal later, we came to some gates with a small paper HV Festival sign on them......so much for advertising! Once we found the Classic stage where ELP would perform, we were able to lounge about for a bit playing 'spot as many different ELP t-shirts as you can' until it was time to go stand at the front of the stage (left side in front of Keith's Moog!). On minute there were about 60 hippies standing there, and then I blinked and was surrounded by thousands of music lovers - all squirming to get as close to the stage as possible! At 8.30pm or thereabouts, Ian Hunter (who was on before ELP) finished his set and the roadies came on stage to set up for ELP - this seemed to take forever, as there was some kind of problem with the Moog I think. I spent this time chatting with two brothers, one of whom was as rabid a fan as me! It was his birthday, so a double celebration for him. He had never seen ELP live before and I have to report that he was ecstatic after the gig. By the way, was that Tom from Noddy's Puncture I saw on the stage (wearing Keith's hat from his days with the Nice)? The gig finally started with Welcome Back............and it was like they had never been away, even though the playing of all three was not a patch on their heyday. Throughout it all, you could see that they were enjoying themselves. Yes, there were technical problems (feedback on Greg's mike and dodgy levels on Keith's set up at times), but the crowd loved it and we would have stood there for another 90 minutes if they let us! Don't ask me the set list, 'cos I was too busy enjoying myself to care - anything ELP play is ok by me (I would even sit happily and watch Carl bang on a biscuit tin with a spoon, and as for Keith....well, he has been my idol for over 33 years so I don't think I need to elaborate!!) 'Touch and Go' and 'Pictures' were the best pieces that night - it was great to see the cannon ending of 'Pictures' was still used ....even though it went 'pop' instead of 'BANG!!' A lot of fans were screaming for 'Pirates', but I don't think Keith's right hand would have been up to that, unfortunately. My one wish would be to see them play again at The Guildhall in Plymouth this August. After all, this was their first ever gig way back in August 1970, and it would be fitting for them to end up here too, wouldn't it? I can only dream............. Hi John, As you probably know Keith borrowed my Hammond L100 to use on the High Voltage gig. He had borrowed it last year for his appearance at Wembley Arena with 'Spinal Tap', so it wasn't completely unexpected when the request came. I had to take it down to London and leave it with them for their rehearsals over a 3 week period before the festival. On the thursday before the HV weekend, we (the Noddy's Puncture entourage) had a very special day actually watching ELP rehearse and I also had to make a few adjustments and fix a few things that had gone faulty on the Hammond. So in effect I was actually 'working' Then, on the day - literally 30 minutes before their appearance, I was asked if I would actually set my equipment up on stage for the show! Emo was happy with the Hammond and has now - at this point, actually used it more times on stage than I have! He split a key with one of his daggers and scratched and scuffed the cabinet after leaving it on it's side - but again, that was expected. The key stays put as it's still playable - and a 'talking point' ... hehe .. ;c) All in all a complete honour and a very special experience for this long time ELP fan, and I'm sure Keith knows that if ever he needs an L100 again then I'm there and ready to provide. Thanks Keith, for letting me be a part of the occasion. On May 11th, I went to the Emerson & Lake show in Peekskill, NY. I thought the show was fantastic, by the way, even better than the one at the Nokia Theater in NYC in April (the debut show due to prior cancellations). Anyway, anyone who attended that tour might recall that there was a Question & Answer segment during the 2nd half. When I got my turn at the mic, I thanked the guys for indulging us with such a warm, intimate performance, I mentioned that the first concert I ever went to was ELP at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1974, and, oh yes, I asked if I could play a bit of Hoedown on Keith's organ. He said.......drumroll.................OK! I cut together 3 videos of this experience, one of which was made on my phone and the others provided by some wonderful strangers who were in the audience.....Rebecca Bitondo and Michael D'Antuono, and posted the clip on youtube. I've also put up a recording of Karn Evil 9 1st Impression as performed by my now defunct ELP tribute band, New Lucky Men. I thought the readers of this list might get a kick out of my Emersonian thrill ride!
