I received my copy of Emerson Lake & Palmer Live at Nassau Coliseum 1978 the other day and just listened to it today. For those who feel there have already been enough live recordings of ELP released, please take note: This is no ordinary recording. It is a legendary live recording of Emerson, Lake, & Palmer that was captured at one of the two sold out performances at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum on the band's final tour in 1978. It had begun in the summer of 1977 as the WORKS tour with a 70 piece orchestra and a caravan of seven tractor trailers, but after three weeks, the orchestra was dropped and the band carried on as a trio. It was then that ELP took an unofficial 13 year split from each other and this is the only pro-recording taken on the 1978 tour after the band returned to its trio format. This 2 CD set was taken from one of the only surviving original analog tape recordings. What really makes this recording so special is the sheer energy and near perfect performance that Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer displayed. It was captured the week of the Blizzard of 78 that paralyzed the New York tri-state area with twenty three inches of snow. Inside the auditorium, however, it was a perfect world. The film Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind had recently been released and was all the rage. You'll hear Keith Emerson play the themes of these moves in one of his solos, and the crowd roared with approval when they heard it. Throughout the concert Greg Lake's voice was flawless, and both Emerson and Palmer dazzled the crowd with their remarkable showmanship and solos. To say they were a remarkable live band is an understatement, but don't take my word for it; just check it out yourself. This CD collection represents a time capsule from a decade long past, when Emerson Lake & Palmer were at the forefront of the Progressive Rock movement in the world. ELP would not tour again until 1992. It sounds as good today as it did thirty three years ago when Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer created it for the sold out crowd of 15,000 eager fans. Tony Ortiz P.S. Just to let you know how good this concert is/was, back in 1978 at the age of 14 when it was broadcasted on the radio I recoded it on a cassette tape and wrote on the tape: "ELP LIVE at Nassau Coliseum 1978 THE TAPE THAT NO ONE CAN BORROW". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carl Palmer news (can also be found on CarlPalmer.com) Ludwig Artist Signature Series - Carl Palmer Snare Drum http://www.carlpalmer.com/MiscPages-2011/20110219-Ludwig-Snare.php Carl Palmer birthday http://palmer-power-guestbook.blogspot.com/2011/03/carl-palmers-birthday-is-march-20th.html#comments The Official CARL PALMER Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/ELPTonyO Carl Palmer of ELP & ASIA to Release Debut Instructional Dvd http://www.progrockmusictalk.com/2011/01/superstar-drummer-carl-palmer-of-elp.html CARL PALMER Goldmine interview. http://www.goldminemag.com/features/ultimate-prog-ultimate-palmer Review Fix Exclusive: Carl Palmer Audio Interview http://reviewfix.com/2011/02/review-fix-exclusive-carl-palmer-interview/ ASIA releases a new Live CD / DVD Showcasing the "Phoenix" Tour http://www.carlpalmer.com/press/20100909-CD-DVD-PhoenixTour.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith Emerson news Pictures of an Exhibitionist New clips from 2010 shoot http://emerson-picturesofanexhibitionist.blogspot.com/ Keith Emerson, Interviewed by You http://keyboardmag.com/article/123355 Keith Emerson remembers Gary Moore http://www.keithemerson.com/index.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greg Lake news Greg Lake's Bass Player Interview http://www.bassplayer.com/article/lucky-man-/December-2010/125265 =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: Michael Ford Date: Tue, 2 Nov 2010 08:39:14 +0000 To: elp-digest Subject: PP ARNOLD Hi. Possibly should have sent this before, but didn't think that a new digest would be out so soon. The other week PP was on BBC radio Norfolk doing a interview and they played some tracks from her new album. During the interview she briefly mentioned The Nice (just one line, "oh was that with the Nice"). But she went on to say that she was putting together an album of unreleased tracks from the old days and seemed to imply that they would include some recorded with the band, no release date was mentioned. I don't know about all of them, but Arturia's CS-80V will emulate the classic "Fanfare" sound, complete with a beautiful growl on the modulation. Only a few GX-1 were ever built, but the mass produced CS-80 was based on the technology Yamaha first developed in the GX-1. So a CS-80 or good emulator should be able to get most if not all the GX-1 sounds you're looking for, or very close. =========================== ELP-related products, tribute bands, promoters (The ELP Digest does not endorse, etc.) =========================== (no submissions this issue) =========================== Digest subscription, mailing address, and administrative stuff to: elp-digest-request@reluctant.com ELP-related info that you want to put in the digest to: elp-digest@reluctant.com Back issues are available from the ELP Digest web site: http://www.brain-salad.com/ or http://www.elp-digest.com Note: The opinions, information, etc. contained in this digest are those of the original message sender listed in each message.
