To: digest-mailer@reluctant.com From: denkra@juno.com (Denise M Krause) Subject: 8/7 ELP/Deep Purple show in Hartford Date: 8/8/98 11:59 AM There's no mistaking that this was a Deep Purple show. In recognition of this fact ELP played a very short set. They sounded great ... but played for only an hour and fifteen minutes. To the best of my recollection ... here's what they played: Opening Fanfare (sounded somewhat like one of the instrumental portions of Memoirs of An Officer and a Gentleman) KE9 1st Impression, Part 2 Hoedown (Thankfully light on the Moog ribbon control gymnastics) Touch and Go Excerpts from Piano Concerto Lucky Man A Time and Place Knife Edge Tarkus (in its entirety) Encore ... Fanfare for the Common Man ... including Rondo and Carl's Solo ... no Hammond wrestling. They performed well ... Keith in particular ... and left you wanting to hear more. A significant portion of the crowd filed out after their set ... I stayed for about an hour of Deep Purple ... that's all my hearing could take. Although. I don't care much for their vocalist ... I found Dream Theatre entertaining ... At one point they played a piece called Peruvian Skies ... it was "Have a Cigar" by Pink Floyd with different lyrics... The highlights of ELP's set were Tarkus and A Time and Place. Keith's solo based on his concerto was outstanding as well. It's funny ... having heard Lake sing so many times over so many years ... I tend to be a little critical of his current vocal abilities ... I went to this show with a friend who'd never seen them before ... he thought Greg sounded tremendous ... he really did sound pretty good. Carl as always put on a great show... Overall it was an enjoyable set ... the band looked like they were having fun ! That's all for now. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
