Truer words were never sung as ELP blessed Toronto with an incredibly strong performance at the Molson Amphitheatre. Two days after the concert, I am still left shaking my head at how well the boys can combine their individual talents into one overwhelming driving force in music. Based upon this show, there is no mistake about it - ELP are clearly looking to the future and certainly "Crossing the Rubicon" is an indication of some excellent things to come for us all. The set list for the Toronto show was consistent with that detailed in other reviews so I will not delve into specifics. The precision, the timing and the power were all there to such a degree that I can truthfully say that this is a "better" Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The concert was full of those multi-layered intricacies that are unique to ELP and in fact have now been developed to a point previously unheard. One thing to emphasize is that Greg Lake had full range and control to the vocal arrangements for all the material. And yes, as you can gather from the other reviews, "Tarkus" was delivered beyond all expectations. Having attended the scaled-down warm-up show in Burlington, Vermont on August 2nd, I was astounded to experience once again, a full scale ELP production complete with an excellent light show. The set by Deep Purple was worthwhile to hear in that it provided a benchmark from which to measure a good group compared to the excellence of ELP. ELP were clearly the headliners in Toronto. For all of you having a ticket to an upcoming ELP concert, I envy you greatly and wish I could be in attendance as well. Get ready for something really special and make sure that any of your friends who do not have a ticket get one as soon as possible. For all you people unfortunate enough to have the show in Philadelphia cancelled, I hope that it is re-scheduled. Be patient because as this tour progresses so to the collective efforts of Messrs. Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Enjoy! This was my 25th opportunity to see Emerson, Lake and Palmer (including their different line-ups with Powell and Berry) and I look forward to the next 25.
