I've seen it on sale back home in Southern California. I saw it in a CD/
high-end stereo store called The Digital Ear. It sold for $9.95 I think.
I don't have the address handy right now, but I can find out the address
and phone number, or someone can call information @ (714) 555-1212, and the
city is Tustin. They only had one copy, but I'm sure they're willing to
special order more (they have one of the best selections of imports I've
ever seen). There's also a place right here called the Rock House, and
they special order import stuff too, but I'm not too sure about their prices
(Digital Ear's prices for regular CD's are ~$1-2 below average (Tower, et al.),
pretty good IMHO). I don't have the Rock House's address/phone# handy either,
but I guess it would be easier for me to give them everyone's orders or
something.  Sending them all out's gonna be hell though.......0-}

John, I'd be pleased to help if I can. I have looked (somewhat
half-heartedly, I'd admit!) for this CD single, but haven't seen it
anywhere. I work in central London, so I have access to a number of large
record shops, so at least one of them should have some, or be able to order
them.

I'm off to see ELP on Saturday at the Royal Albert Hall (where Keith got
banned from with the Nice in the late sixties, after burning the US flag
while playing "America"). I'll let you know how it goes! (I've also got
tickets for another show on Oct. 26th at the same venue :-) :-)

(for the digest, if you think they would be ok for it.)

On the CDs of Brain Salad Surgery that my friend and I own, the music drops
out very briefly in the 2nd part of the 1st impression of Karn Evil 9, right
after the line "We've got thrills and shocks" Is this like this on the
records as well? Was it intentional (a shock?) or just a goof in the
mastering?

Also, I would like to know if anyone has any roios (recordings of
indeterminate origins) of the current tour. I have one, and would be
interested in hearing from anyone else who does, especially if it's a
soundboard.

This is an intentional effect that seems to be the aural equivalent of
slamming on the brakes after a few laps on a Grand Prix circuit.
(Another example of the effectiveness of silence.) This gasp for air
was even done live on the tours where they played all of KE9.

There are rumors that another brief North American tour might happen in
fall/winter. I think the European tour keeps them busy until November,
    however.

   >>> You wouldn't happen to have an ELP logo pin you'd consider selling,

Sorry. I bought one for myself but have no extras. The people who make
the stuff for sale on tour however is Brockum (sp??). Maybe I could get
their address/phone off the tour booklet and we could see if they'll
sell by mail to people who didn't get to see them live.

[ Editor's note: The following is a series of correspondence shrunk down to
1 message for brevity. I think I've left all the content
intact though I've done some editing. ]

I was at a "Jazz Brunch" at John Harvard's Brew House in Harvard Sq, right
near Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, on Sunday. Right after "Take Five"
I heard, much to my surprise, a jazz trio version of the Rondo that Emerson
plays in the finale of his elp concerts. Was this some early Nice recording,
or did Emerson do a collaboration with some other Jazz artits as in the
Manhatten Collection? It was a very refreshing version of the piece, and
it actually took a minute to figure out where I had heard it before, although
it was most definately Emerson at the Piano.

re: Rondo encore

It's actually not that surprising to hear a jazz band do this once you
know the origin. `Rondo' as the Nice called it is/was a rendition of Dave
Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk. So Emerson's rendition of it has always
been as a cover of the Brubeck piece.

One of these days, Jim Smith (who helped me start the ELP Digest) and I
will finish our article about the covers/riffs of other songs/composers that
have found their way into various Nice/ELP tunes.

So I suppose then, that since I had just heard Take Five, that it could
very well have been that original Brubeck version then? Is there a CD
or album that would have had them both on it?

Do you think Emerson himself may have done a jazz trio version of the
tune? Perhaps he did a true rendition of the song?
It really did sound too much like Emerson's playing...

At times, the Nice sound wasn't all that different from a jazz trio.
That, coupled with Emerson's obvious affinity for jazz piano, would lead me
to believe that he has played it pretty `straight'. As I recall, the Brubeck
version I've heard is more `jumpy' than the Emerson version but I don't
think that Emerson stretches much from the original in his rendition (as
oppsoed to say, Toccata, for which there are parts where it is hard to tell
which is Keith `value-added' and which Ginestera).

Steve:

I talked to my brother last night and got the following info. There is a
CD that has the Dave Brubeck Quartet version of both Take Five and Blue
Rondo a la Turk on it. It is called "Time Out" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet
and is in the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces Series, catalog # 40585. I'm
pretty sure this is one of the cheaper price ranges of CDs, too.

Also, my brother reminded me that Brubeck's rendition of Rondo is
something more like 9/8 time, while Keith has adapted it to 4/4.

Subject: _Welcome Back_ length, _Atlantic Years_ musings

Can someone please tell me the length of the _Welcome Back, MY
Friends_ live set? The reason I'm wondering is that I don't want to
spend a good sum of money on a double disc import unless it has a decent
amount of music on it. (_Yesshows_, for example, is only 77 minutes long,
and thus could fit on one CD, but it was released as a double.)
Regarding the _Atlantic Years_ compilation. I like it. In
particular:
 - The segued together KE9 First Impression
 - The great improvement in sound quality, especially on the early stuff
 - The original "I Believe in Father Christmas." I never heard that
before, unless that's the version I always hear on the radio around X-mas.
Anyone know? I can't remember off-hand.
 Things I don't like:
 - My major complaint (other than that they should have put out a boxed
set!) is that the set doesn't show much indication of the band's sense of
humor. Someone with only a little exposure to ELP who bought this would
never know the band has a lighter side. Personally, I'd replace "Tank"
with "The Sheriff" and "Are You Ready, Eddy?", but that's a matter of
opinion.
 - The mislabeling of the tracks on disc two, and the omission of song
lengths. Again, someone who didn't know much about the band would be
totally baffled when listening to the second disc.

Well, that's all I can think of, but "There might have been things I
missed."

About the "Affairs Of The Heart" cassette single: Some folks
(Progression Magazine, I think) were handing them out at the
Concord show if you filled out a questionaire. When they ran out
of questionaires they just gave away the singles to anyone. The
upshot of this is: I have two spare copies. They have a sticker
saying that the cassette? or album are (were) on sale at Tower.
(Gross commercialization eh?) This cassette contains "Affairs Of
The Heart" backed with "Affairs Of The Heart". It's the album
edition, so this is really for collector freaks only.

These cassettes are available. I'm not sure how to decide
who gets them, but send me a note if you're interested. And tell
me what is the concept behind Brain Salad Surgery (in 200 words
or less).

I'll try to see if I can track down some more of these
cassettes.

Well, I finally got to see ELP. A very entertaining show.

Some highlights:

As far as I know, this was the first ELP gig in the UK for 15 years!

The gig was supposedly being broadcast live on Radio 1; but no one on
alt.music.progressive has confirmed this... Needless to say, I'd like
a tape.

The set list was the same as the other shows, except:

Close to Home *before* Creole Dance; I *didn't* like the midi'ed
strings on the former; I'm glad that Creole Dance no longer has an
obvious Dede De Vida section in it.

No Affairs of the Heart.

Honky Tonk Train Blues was added. Fun!

Still... You Turn Me On was right after From The Beginning.

Comments:

Lake was in the center, and I did not see the Persian rug.

That was the best version of Lucky Man I've ever heard live; the other
acoustic version has always missed the irony of the song by failing to
repeat the chorus *after* the man dies (plus, Keith's solo was great).

Keith used the "ribbon" controller in Iconoclast, and went out into
the audience, but there was a technical fault: no fireworks.

Our seats were excellent: 100 ft from Keith or so. After Pictures, I
just had to go up and shake his hand, which I did!

There's another date being added for the Royal Albert Hall: Oct 27th,
I believe.

They were selling Keith's Christmas album there, with a flyer that
said that it "is not yet available in stores". The vendor wouldn't
believe me when I said I've had my copy for 2 years. Yes, it is the
old album,; I looked at the track list.

Black Moon suffered live, since Keith insisted on using no sequencing.
I though it would have been a good compromise for him to play the
entry of each voice, and then have it loop automatically...

Oh well, must go.

Great show.

Ron
