Prelude
=======

Happy Birthday, Keith Emerson!

Happy Anniversary, ELP Digest!

It was 8 years ago today that I sent the Volume 1, Issue 1 of the ELP Digest.
There were 5 postings in that original "Digest" and it was sent to about 10
people. The topics included... discussion of whether we'd ever see the
release of the 3-album "Welcome Back..." set on CD (yes, we'd eventually see
the entire ELP catalog released), whether we'd ever see the ELP California
Jam performance on home video (we're still hoping), someone checking on the
availability of Keith's Inferno on CD (still not that easy to find), etc.

Anyway, we've made a lot of progress in the past 8 years. But some things
remain the same. And I'm busier than ever and trying to come up with a
schedule that satiates the ELP fan's hunger for all things ELP but that
still lets me get done everything that I need to get done. As usual, it's
a delicate balance. Thanks to all ELP Digest contributors and readers over
the years for the encouragement and contributions.

Though it launched a little early to qualify as a present from Keith to the
fans (it went live in early August), I'm pleased to pass along the news that
the www.keithemerson.com site has been redone. There are some new photos
there and some exciting new additions. (Go to the "What's New" page.) My
personal favorite is the addition of some Liquid Audio tracks. I was
especially delighted to see not only the re-mastered Christmas album but
the re-mastered Honky album!

Anyway... Happy Birthday, Keith.

And on with the show...

Keith Emerson has officially re-launched

I'd encourage you to take the time to check it out. In addition to a complete
redesign of the site, the "store" is ramping up. My personal favorite new
section is the link to the Liquid Audio clips from the newly remastered
Christmas album and the newly remastered Honky album.

And check it soon. I don't know how long they'll leave the "Happy Halloween"
picture of Keith and "friend". Classic stuff.

Wanted to let all of you know that Emo's site has been revamped and it looks
a hell of alot better than it use to. Also, Keith has available the new
Christmas Album containing some of his previous Christmas music with a few
new items, and you can get an autographed copy as well. I just received mine
and it is very well done, the music is great, the photos of Keith are very
nice (I think he should make those available on his site as well,
autographed, of course!), a nicer CD than the previous one. Mine came
autographed and it is handsomely done! For you collectors out there, there
is a few slight irregularities in the CD that might be of interest to those
who enjoy these sort of things before Keefer gets it fixed, but otherwise
it's fine album to have! Go out and buy it, hopefully he'll release his
other albums through his new and improved site and we'll finally be able to
get HONKY on CD!

The show never ends...

Subject: ELP footage on Japanese DVD

Greeting all,

Just thought I would drop a quick note to let folks know about an
interesting item that I very recently picked up on DVD. It is the Japanese
pressing of 'Message to Love-The Isle of Wight Music Festival 1970' film.
This is a fairly common video in most parts of the world and as many of you
know it contains footage of ELP performing the last couple of minutes of
Pictures at an Exhibition at what was their 'debut' live performance (the
same concert which is available on CD from their official website).

What makes the Japanese edition notable is the inclusion of 14 minutes of
additional footage tacked onto the disc at the end of the main feature.
These are additional songs that were not included in the standard edit of
the film and include ELP's complete performance of Rondo A La Turk. So for
those of you who have seen the Isle of Wight film and were disappointed by
the meagre representation of ELP, you may find this edition a bit more
interesting.

If you haven't seen the film, I would highly recommend it. Aside from ELP
the film contains some great performances by many of the top acts of the
era and presents a fasinating and sometimes amusing glimpse of the
backstage arguments and disasters of what turned out to be the last great
outdoor music festival. The disc is distributed by Columbia Nippon and the
catalogue number is COBY-90041. It is a region two/NTSC recording.

Best Wishes
David S.

Since I haven't seen much discussion on it here in the Digest, I'd
like to throw my two cents worth in on The Manticore Special video.
It's an excellent documentary but it was obviously shot on sixteen-
millimeter film and the early 1970s film sound technology doesn't do
justice to the concert segments. It includes scenes of ELP in their
Manticore rehearsal hall, on stage during the European leg of the BSS
tour, and goofing around in the dressing room. Keith flies his plane
and shoots skeet, Greg catches a fish and (later) gets sick, forcing the
cancellation of a show, and Carl plays the William Tell Overture on the
kettledrums. The real heroes of the film turn out to be the band's road
crew, who perform major feats of strength moving the show from town to
town. It's a good look at the band during its peak years. VH-1
included some clips from this film during their recent "Where Are They
Now?" segment.
Does any film or video exist of The Nice?

I recently bought a CD entitled The Nice America - the BBC Sessions.
Which is exactly as it says; recordings of the sessions made (and
listened to by me back in the) late '60's.

However, I was intrigued to note that despite the copyright notice for
the BBC, and the legend "Released by arrangement with BBC Worldwide Ltd"
it sounds for all the world as if it's a bootleg.

It is definitely not howe I imagine a BBC soundboard recording sounds,
it must be recorded directly off a radio - some of the tracks have the
"dj's" intro's and outro's on!

Nonetheless, it is a very nostalgic trip back to more innocent and fun
days, and for only 12.99L (Pound sterling) a decent value package!

Cheers,

john

I noticed at ELP concerts in '97 and '98 that the music played over the

"Clear the battlefield and let me see, all the profit from our victory.."

some senseless destruction throughout the pictures and at the end we're left

Hello, I've been listening to ELP since about 1973 and am always on the
look out for interesting ELP stuff. Today at my local used record and
CD store I found a very interesting album called 'On Tour with ELP' .
It's a promotional copy of a radio interview from May 14, 1977 in Montreal.
They were discussing the soon to begin Works Volume I tour. On it is a
studio version of the orchestrated Bolero that is pretty cool.

Are there any other ELP recordings out there like this.

Thanks, Jon B.

[ Editor's Note: I have a copy of that album that I picked up at a record
swap many, many years ago. It was an album that was made to
be released to radio stations who could intersperse their
own announcing with an ELP "interview". The orchestral
version of "Bolero" had been a rarity since, at the time,
this was the only way to get it. More recently, I think it
has shown up in other places. Still, it's a fun album.
I don't know if there are other ELP "made for radio station"
		 albums like it. - John - ]

Subject: Italian historical prog bands are alive and well

Dear all,

Since Banco and PFM are linked by an ancient deal with ELP,
I would like to tell you what happened some weeks ago in Sardinia...

End of June.... One of my bandmates says "Oh, by the way,
there's PFM live in Decimoputzu (a village of 5000 people or less)
for free...." --- "!?!?!?!?!" - "Wow" "Great..."

It was true. PFM, with four original members: Franz Di Cioccio on drums and
centrestage singing and hopping (where all his energy comes from?), Franco
Mussida on guitars and vocals, Patrick Djivas on fretless bass and Flavio
Premoli on keyboards and vocals, with 3 younger, enthusiastic players
(sax/flute, drums, guitar/violin), played live some beautiful songs from
the 97 album "Ulisse" and many classics, including "la carroza di Hans,
4 holes in the ground and Celebration" with arrangements similar to those
of the live album "www.pfmpfm.it"

By the way, Franz is without a doubt still an unbelievable drummer, his
solo was far better than the Palmer's one in the July 97 sardinian ELP show.
Not to mention the other ones... What a show!!

Is really a luck that PFM has reformed some years ago and that they
keep on playing once per year in this (almost) forgotten island.

4 days after, Banco played live in Sedilo (a village smaller than Decimoputzu),
for free (the committee that organizes the Sedilo annual horserace (similar
in intensity and dangerosity to the Palio of Siena), called Ardia,
has payed the fee for Banco).

But, again, a great show. When we arrive in Sedilo, after 2hrs by car, Banco
is sound checking in the main square of the village. They are bombing out of
the speakers a classic one (maybe La conquista della Posizione Eretta), and
disappear for two hours.

About 10 pm, they begin and I am re-convinced (this is my 3rd banco show)
that Vittorio Nocenzi is the sole keyboardist I put aside to Emo: listening
him playing piano/hammond(sampled)/sinths is everytime a wonderful experience.

The band is at the same height: the singer FRancesco di Giacomo is powerful
and clean, Rodolfo Maltese on guitars and the guitarist, bassist, and
drummer (can't remember their names) play Banco music at their best.

So, more than two hours of wonderful music pass us by.

If you ELP fans have the opportunity of being near a PFM or Banco show,
(BTW Banco was in Mexico last May) go and listen to them,
it's a joyful experience.

If you are too far away, "PFM: 10 anni live" and "www.pfmpfm.it" for PFM and
"Nudo" for Banco are excellent live albums that capture the energy these
bands are able to give.

well, that's all
Enjoy
Adriano

URL of the official Banco site is:

I also have a midifile from Banco, called Evoluzione. Made by Francesco De
Vincenzi. You can download it from "Other progressive midifiles" section of
my home page. URL is in my signature.

Subject: Smoke on the Hammond

Hi all

Around the beginning of the '90s I saw on the former Italian
all-music TV network VideoMusic (now it's called TMC2 and has become
an almost mainstream commercial tv network) an all-stars
band playing Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water".

The videoclip featured Keith Emerson playing an Hammond for a few bars.
Does anyone know the story behind this?

1000 thanks
Adriano

[ Editor's Note: I recall that this was done as a "Live Aid" kind of thing
to raise awareness and money for a charitable cause. I think
the cause was for the victims of a ferry that sank in
northern Europe but I've forgotten the details. At one time,
I recall that the video you refer to was released (perhaps
in Europe or Japan) but I've never been able to track it
down. Nor have I ever seen it. But I'd like to. - John - ]
