Prelude

Hi.

As the days count down to the start of the Keith Emerson Band's tour
as a support act for the Scorpions' World Tour (North America), reader
comments are starting to come in. And, of course, we're anxiously
waiting to find out what they'll play.

Some ELP Digest readers have sent along pointers to some transcripts of
recent Greg Lake interviews.

There's at least one web site that points to a Carl Palmer Band
appearance in Mexico next year.

And, of source, ELP Digest readers are continuing the quest for an
ELP induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, CalJam footage, and
actual 'previously unreleased' material on the ELP DVD. All this and
more. Read on...

David Bentley reported (in the Yahoo ELP-DISC group) the following
news item about the death of Don Leslie (inventor of the 'Leslie
Speaker' system) that I thought would be of interest to many ELP
fans. The 'Leslie Speaker' utilizes rotating speakers and/or horns
(at different speeds for different parts of the audio spectrum) that
is instrumental in creating some of the sounds for which the Hammond
Organ is famous.

Donald James Leslie

LESLIE-Donald James Leslie, Born Danville, Illinois, April 13, 1911,
Passed away September 2 at home at the age of 93. Parents were Benjamin
Franklin Leslie, and Lucy Keller Leslie. Preceeded in death by his
sisters Dorothy, Helen, Eva, Mary and brother Robert Joseph. He is
survived by Carolyn, his wife of 48 years, daughter Jeanine, sons
Scott and James, six grandchildren, and sister Mary Elizabeth Grime.
The Leslie family moved to southern California in 1913, settling in
Glendale.

Donald went to Glendale schools, and graduated from Glendale Union
High School in 1929. Acquired knowledge in mechanics, radio,
electronics, metals while working at various jobs, including employment
at Naval Research Laboratories in Washington D.C. during WWII. Had
considerable interest in music, mostly piano and pipe organ. At the
introduction of the Hammond Organ in the early thirties, he invented
a unique speaker system, which was called the "Leslie Speaker" used on
Hammond and other electronic organs by which he became rather famous
worldwide. He established Electro Music, in Pasadena and manufactured
the Leslie Speaker there for over forty years. CBS acquired his
company in 1965, and it became one of the first units of CBS
Musical Instruments.

The popularity of his speaker invention earned him several awards,
including one from Hammond in 1978 that stated "Donald J. Leslie -
In recognition of his outstanding contribution and dedication in
making the Hammond-Leslie sound responsible for creating the organ
industry". This speaker invention led to about fifty patents in the
musical field, some of which changed the way in which some music was
presented. Other patents awarded to him included radio control of
model trains, control and clorination systems for swimming pools. He
was a long time resident of Pasadena, and Altadena, and a member of
Annandale Golf Club for many years. His hobbies included Tennis,
Music, Model railroads, and Fly ing private aircraft around the U.S.,
Canada, and Mexico.

Family and friends are welcome for a celebration of life for Don at
the Leslie residence in Altadena Saturday, September 11th beginning
at 4:30. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Don's memory can be
made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1132, Fairfax,

Hi John,

How's things? Hope all is well. It's been a great pleasure to read
the ELP Digest over the years... here's a toast for many more!

Not sure if this was already mentioned on the Digest, but I just heard
from a good friend who's involved with the Baja Prog Festival
organization that Carl Palmer and his band will be one of the main
attractions of the 2005 edition of that prestigious festival, that
happens every year in Mexicali (Mexico), in March.

This is a good opportunity not only for those living in Mexico but
also for USA fans as Mexicali is pretty close to California... Together
with Palmer, bands such as Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Caravan, Flash,
and the Ken Hensley Band will perform. More details at

Subject: NYTimes.com Article: The Moog Synthesizer Makes a Comeback

ELP Digest readers 'Jeffab' and Matthew Thallmayer both let us know
that an article in the Sept. 29, 2004 New York Times Arts section
mentions Keith and his part of the Moog Synthesizer saga. (Thanks to
both of you!)

Copyright restrictions that the NY Times seems to take pretty seriously
don't seem to let me send the article in its entirety. However, you can
read the whole thing on the NY Times web site. (After a few days, you
may need to do a free registration.)

The URL for the article is:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/29/arts/music/29moog.html?ex=1097493731&ei=1&en=7545c8308eddf8b4

(if that wraps around to multiple lines, copy/paste it back into
one piece in your browser).

Here's what 'jeffab' had to say about it:

"Mr. Emerson mentioned very favorably in the NYTimes article
on Moog."

And here are a few teasers to entice you to read the whole article:

"Robert Moog, the eccentric electronic pioneer whose name is
practically synonymous with the synthesizer - and hence
with rock music's psychedelic era - is back in vogue.

In this decidedly digital age, more and more contemporary
musicians and rockers are rediscovering the space-age,
analog sounds of the Moog synthesizer.

[...]

If Ms. Carlos helped introduce the sounds of circuitry to
listeners' record players, Keith Emerson, the former
keyboardist for the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and
Palmer, showed musicians and music fans that the
synthesizer was more than an odd studio instrument; it
could be an exciting performance instrument.

Mr. Emerson's towering, 10-foot-tall, 550-pound "Monster
Moog," as he called it, was an indispensable part of the
group's concerts, even though it was often unreliable and
difficult to play. He said he had to tune it repeatedly as
he played and sometimes had to cover it with tinfoil
because it picked up police radio traffic during
performances.

[...]"

As you'll see in another note in this Digest, this article
was triggered by the release of a documentary movie about
Robert Moog that will be in somewhat limited release but
should available to the rest of us on DVD in the (I hope)
not-too-distant future.

Thanks again to 'jeffab' and Matthew!

I'll add my vote to the California Jam tapes.

One night me and a couple friends went over to my place after work.
It was a friday/Saturday? night and ABC had it's "In Concert" show on
with the local 95.5 KLOS FM broadcasting the sound in stereo. Anyway
they were playing ELP from the California Jam. It's that show that
got me to run out and buy BSS, becoming a fan for life.

I never saw any of the early shows but, was able to see all of
the ones in Los angeles starting with Black Moon.

Hi Jesse-

I spoke to Will Alexander at the first Moogfest at Manny's in New York
and he informed me that he has quite good if not spectacular quality
video footage of the California Jam.

Remarkably I'm known as the only fan who taped the 1974 California
Jam in Stereo, and in my eyes and in a lot of other people's eyes
it is the biggest musical in the world today.

I've also acquired the authentic ABC-TV California Jam Scriptbook
that was used to stage the mega-event.

I have no qualms about releasing my world exclusive stereo version of
California Jam, however I fear I'm never gonna clear the Rights.
"Sticks in a bundle" is how the ABC-TV lead attorney described what
I have is. I really feel something must be done about these
California Jam Recordings of mine. Ok, ok. I've come to the
realization that perhaps I'm the one fan who walked away with the
greatest "souvenir" imaginable of the mighty California Jam.

Subject: ELP DVD concerns and hopes

Hi fellow ELP Fans,

the last digest brought up some hopes and concerns about the anounced
ELP DVD. During Carl's last Drum Masterclass in Ludwigsburg, Germany,
I had the chance to talk with Carl about this DVD. His statement was
that they have their hands on "everything" that is available and that
about 1 Hour of material that they have compiled is really unseen
footage of ELP shows. I have no idea what Carl means with "everything",
does it mean everything he knows about or really everything that was
filmed with the band's approval. I asked e.g. about Duesseldorf
June 71, which was filmed by a professional TV team. He told me,
yes we have the complete show (TARKUS, RONDO and KNIFE EDGE were
broadcasted on the German TV in 1971 on 3 different evenings as
individal films, yet BARBARIAN, TAKE A PEBBLE, NUTROCKER were never
shown, btw Pictures was not performed that night). Circulating in the
trader community is only RONDO aka "Supergroup in Concert". This would
leave about 60 Minutes of unseen footage alone.

Who knows what happened to the some 6 hours of unused stuff of the
"Manticore special" that is rumoured to exsist? Greg told in a early
73 interview that the band intends to film a complete show in Italy
in order to replace the Pictures film, that the band didn't like so
much - what did actually happen.? During the May 74 Europe tour,
German TV showed a short snapshot film of a BSS show in Germany, who
knows whether a film team actually filmed a show or one guy with a
hand camera did the short filming for the German TV during Take a
Pebble.

Comparisons to the great Led Zeppelin DVD have to be treated carefully.
Beside ELP I am also a big ZEP Fan and ZEP did not treat their fans
well wrt official video stuff, like ELP did. The only official video
was based on the "Song remains the same" film, which IMHO was by far
not the best ZEP performance. Some ZEP shows like Albert Hall, Earls
Court or Knebworth were known for having been filmed, yet only
fractional bootleg material showed up. Especially EARLS COURT 1975 was
the long time "Holy Grail" bootleg video, as almost no copies made
their way into the trader community until lately. IMHO, ZEP can still
top their own DVD with an official and complete Earl's Court 75
release.

So it was very easy for ZEP to release great, mainly unseen footage of
their shows. For me this DVD is still "the mother of all concert DVDs".

ELP instead was much more active in officially releasing show footage
on video. E.g. Lyceum 1970 and of course the Montreal video, later
came the "Welcome Back", Manitore 73 special and Royal Albert Hall 92
videos. So a lot of good video stuff is already released. Therefore I
don't see the chance that ELP will give us 5 Hours of almost unseen
show footage like ZEP could do. Even the diehard video collectors
don't show "ELP Holy Grail" material in their ELP bootleg video lists.
I have no idea wether the CalJam show was completely filmed or not, I
only know about the 50 Minutes bootleg stuff that is circulating in
the trader community. If the complete show, in correct order of
pieces would be released on the new DVD, that would be great. Yet this
might cost a fortune to get the rights from CBS (someone told in the
digest how much ELP had to pay for the some 30 seconds of the
"Spinning Piano Event" out of CalJam). And again, the rest of the Cal
Jam that was never shown, would be more than 1hour of unseen footage.
Remember Carl's statement.

In order to tune expectations, I think an assement is only valid if the
new ELP DVD is compared to the former offically released footage. If
the overlap would be like 80 %, I would be a bit disappointed myself,
yet I might buy the DVD to replace my old video tapes. If the DVD gives
us a lot of the footage in best quality that was formerly available
as low quality bootleg stuff only, I wouldn't be disappointed because
I think that a big portion of ELP fans haven't seen this stuff before.
Also it should be remembered that some TV footage well known in 1
country, might be unknown in many others, like the Cal Jam footage or
the Dusseldorf footage. Who in the US has seen the 1977 TV appearance
on the German Rockpop program, when Greg was standing (with a pretty
much "Scared to death" face) right behind a real tiger stretching and
yawning in front of him during "Tiger in the Spotlight". I think this
was the one moment in his live when Greg loved to do a playback show
;-).

To conclude on Carl's statement, I hope that he talked about 1 hour
footage that he hasn't seen before, maybe that would give us the most
we can expect.

After being an ELP fan for 34 years now, I finally learned to a certain
extent to keep my expectations down, when it comes to an official ELP
release. If this ELP DVD would be at least comparable to the ZEP DVD,
personnally I would be really surprised. Let's wait and see.

Take care

Hello John;

I have been reading for your site for a number of years, but really
just enjoyed reading. Sorry I have not participated in any discussion
until now. My opinion on Emo's tour with the Scorpions is just plain
horrible! I have been a fan for 32 years and have seen the band
and solo shows too many to count, but with the Scorpions. The tour
would have suited me fine if it were in a smaller club atmosphere.
I think this would have been successful as well! I won't be there at
some huge arena with a bunch of knuckle-heads in the audience who
really could care less about seeing Keith perform on stage. They
just want to know where the closest beer vendor is anyway! Well, I
guess I will just have to read about in the digest!

Subject: Keith's Moog

Dear John,

I was amused to read John Whapshott's question about the Moog in
August Digest. I'm sure a version of that question has gone through
all of our heads at some stage. Do all those cables, knobs and switches
all do something. But he certainly does play the Moog. I have seen
Keith playing the Moog on the Nice tour in the UK in 2003 and at
earlier ELP concerts. He probably doesn't play it as often as he would
have in the seventies, he has a lot of easier keyboards around him now.
But the crowd always gets a delight out of seeing him turn to the Moog
and when he hits the really low notes you can feel it in your
diaphragm. I enclose some links below which will help answer John's
question.

http://users.rcn.com/thefront/EmersonRig.html
is an interview with Will Alexander (Keith' Keyboard Technician) in
interview with Tony Di Lorenzo for Q magazine in 1996, which deals at
length with Keiths Modular Moog and it's upkeep. Recommended reading
for any KE fan.

http://www.wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,63523,00.html
is a review of the recent moogfest in NYC which featured the Keith
Emerson Band and of course the Moog.

There are photos of Keith playing the Moog at:

http://www.keithemerson.com/Gallery/2004Appearances/18MayMoogFest/Photos/ME/EmoMotion.jpg

and at

http://www.keithemerson.com/Gallery/Nice2002/2002Oct04/FullSize/emerson10.jpg

Enjoy. I am not sure what comments concerning the Moog that Graham
Lilley refers to (same digest). I agree with him that those who keep
Keith's Modular Moog going are worthy of thanks. At one of the Nice
concert last October I think in Manchester, Keith introduced and
acknowledged Will Alexander and Bazz Ward from the stage when they
came on to replace a (much more modern) piece of equipment that had
failed to function on Intermezzo from Karelia Suite.

Thanks also to you John for keeping the Digest on the road. Its a
great source of information.

Dear John,

I read all the coments to the new "Ultimate Collection". As many of us
I did wonder about the "previously unreleased material". I wondered how
the works 1 material could have been played in 1973 or 74, as it is
written in the package. If the band does not want this cds, why do
they announce it on all their homepages? They should say then: This
is not our business. I can`t believe that numbers sold will reach such
quantities, that all this is justified. A new Greg Lake cd would be
fine. Looking forward to Carl?s new cd. And good old Keith is still
busy.

By the way, it's always a pleasure for me to read the new digest.

A quick note: You may or may not know that Phish, the legendary jam
band from Vermont, played what is to be their last shows ever in
August. A few weeks later over Labor Day weekend X-Phish bassist Mike
Gordon, sat in on a set with the Benevento/Russo Duo (organ & drums,
www.organanddrums.com ) at the moe.down festival in upstate New York.

Well the stage was set - here's an organ, bass, and drums trio - and
they *opened* their set with Hoedown, accurate to the ELP rendition
including with 'Turkey in the Straw', complete with the expected
artistic liberty of improv. Really great to hear a new generation
(?) playing Hoedown some 30 years later. For the curious an mp3 of
the performance is circulating (I have it if someone wants to post -
it's legal with the band's policies). The trio also played Roundabout
later in the set - with Mike Gordon doing the lead guitar bits on the
bass.

John,
The Poteet Percussion Ensemble DVD is now finished and available.
The DVD contains the complete concert, performed in May of 2004 which
concluded with excellent performances of Lucky Man and Karn Evil 9.

Plus, there are lots of extra features on the DVD as well. The DVDs
are available for a $10 donation to the Poteet High School Percussion
Ensemble plus postage. You can still view the streaming Lucky Man and
Karn Evil 9 videos on our band website:

Subject: Yet another ELP tribute with vacancies.....

Hi John.

Noddy's Puncture - UK based ELP tribute band is having personnel
problems.....(yet again!)

Hi, I'm Tom Noddy's keyboard player and I'd now like to try and recruit
some actual *ELP FANS* as members for the next incarnation of this long
running tribute.

Don't know why it never occured to me before but ELP fans as members
would probably remain interested for longer than has been the norm in
recent years..!

I'm based in the North West of the UK, in Rochdale near Manchester and
am looking for fans who are familiar with and competent at playing the
music of ELP. Ideally a Bassist/Singist/Guitarist and Drummer who -
like me - have been having a go at ELP toons for as long as they can
remember.

A Northern UK base preferred as frequent *get togethers* would be more
likely, but beggars can't be choosers etc....

Please email me: noddyspuncture@yahoo.co.uk

Even if you know of someone - please spread the word.

Many Thanks.
TOM

Subject: RE: DVD ELP

Hi John,

in our smal country (Netherlands) it is very difficult to find material
from our friends on CD or DVD. By accident, I found a DVD from ELP
named "Masters from the vaults." It is a recording from the early days
of ELP, a gig just after releasing their first album "Emerson Lake &
Palmer". The tracks on this DVD are:

Barbarian
Rondo/Bach Improvisations
Drum solo
Nut Rocker
Take a pebble
Knife edge

Total playing time: 60 mins.for 5.1 surround sound
Released on the Intense Media LTD label, INT 1523 PAL
Its a reasonable recording for the price, EUR 9,99

For the official DVD's I'm stuck to the releases offered abroad.

Keep in good shape and greetings from a NICE/ELP fan

Peter
